I'd like to share my thoughts so far on the F2P conversion, and offer some constructive ideas on how to change things for the better. In general I do like most of the changes and additions, but there are also room for improvement in some areas.
Love:
- The Duty officer system. It makes me feel like a captain, and I love the way I have to prioritize between missions and personnel. Assignments feel interesting and relevant. The system also has great possibilities to tie further into the game a little more on that later. If there is something to improve, it is that it makes leveling a bit too quick, and that it seems to take forever to get to the different commendation tiers. I understand Heretic is on top of this though, and very much look forward to see how it will turn out in the end. The only real change I'd like to see has to do with the fact that I would like to see merit/honor back in. With that in mind, assignments should reward an appropriate amount of this.
Like:
- The consolidation of all sorts of marks and emblems into one currency, dilithium. At least for me, this means greater freedom in how I want to spend my time and efforts. I have chosen to save it all to buy MkXI stuff, since I didn't really see the need for buying anything that will soon be useless anyway. Looking at prices for items right now, I think they are more or less OK, at least for purple gear.
- The timed special events are nice. They add some variety to gameplay that I enjoy. Some more events might be good to add further variety, but out of my head I can't think of any specifics I want added.
- The new, shiny ships. I like the variety this adds, but I'm very skeptical about making the Klingon ones C-store only. Klingon freely available order of battle and customization options are thin compared to federation. Fill that gap first, then add C-store ships with special consoles.
Do not like:
- Dilithium added to crafting. This is my biggest complaint by far and a showstopper when it comes to crafting. Dilithium should be used for purchases only, since crafting has other currencies and a different time sink to gather materials. I understand the point of trying to limit availability of very rare and special items, but there are other ways of doing this. Examples (Some of them stolen from other threads. I'm to lazy to give credit where it's due, but if you are the one who came up with the idea, this is may way of saying approve)
- Tie the commodities system into crafting. It is not unreasonable that a new shield need shield arrays, and a new engine need self-sealing steam bolts. For items that you want to be really rare, use contraband as a material. This way the Duty officer system gets a connection to crafting, and it is not unreasonable that something like the Aegis set makes use of unconventional and possibly forbidden technology.
- Raise number of anomalies and particle traces needed. With the Doff system and the multiphasic event, it is easier to accumulate these items. I find it reasonable that crafting cost, at least for purples, go up with it.
- Dilitium may have a use as a gap filler if you are lacking some materials and want something done here and now. Again, if intention is to limit availability of items, have it replace just anomalies and (if tied in) common commodities and not particle traces and exotic commodities.
- Merit/honor removed. This is symbolic capital that I think well represented you achievements and service to the force. In that capacity, it was a good idea to use it for training Boffs and respeccing. For Boff, it is the equivalent of saying I really want this young, promising officer on my ship and I'm using some of my influence to get her, and have her on this or that course to learn a new skill. The system with credits makes no sense from this perspective. From a career perspective, a respecc is about personal development: I've done A for quite a while, and for my personal development I would like to do B instead. I use some of my influence to go a few courses and learn new things. From this perspective, it's more than a little cheap to only allow a limited number of free ones and then charging real money for the rest. End point, I want merit/honor back and to have a bigger role.
- No free ship at VA. This ticked me off a bit since I bought the Bellerophon (beautiful ship!) to use as costume at VA and then discovered I have to give out even more to actually use it. That I was not prepared to do. New tier of ships should come free with every new rank- that is something I earned with my service to Starfleet of KDF! With this in mind, I don't see it as unreasonable to add a cost in merit/honor if you still don't want to give it out for free. That would also mean an increased demand for C-store specs if you absolutely want that.
- Exploration, patrol and deep space encounters are more or less irrelevant and within the setting of the game, this is not good. Starfleet is a lot about exploration, so a better reward for exploration missions are needed to encourage it. It could be a smaller amount of dilithium, or a level-appropriate random item. There has earlier been some talk about a complete remake of exploration, and I'm curios to see more about this. Patrol and exploration missions have the same problem. With war on several fronts, paroling your own systems and engaging enemies in own space should be of high importance. The same solutions as for exploration apply here. It might also be a nice to add daily missions to patrol a random sector that awards an appropriate amount of dilithium. (same for deep space encounters)
One big and one small, not tied to F2P
- Adjust enemy encounters. It feels somewhat ridiculous to blow a Negh'var to space dust with my Miranda. And as federation, I'd like to see much fewer enemy ships exploding. If you still want them to explode, delay the kaboom and add an animation where the doomed ships spews escape pods. This might be a way to get prisoners for the Doff system.
- Please, try to get some new graphics for antiproton ground weapons! The ones I bought looks like plastic toys for kids. That is not what I would expect from a MkXI purple, I want it to look menacing!
