Linear Story Progression issue...

May have been delt with may not have been. Point is I kinda dont care. I didn't get a chance to really voice my opinion on it, and as it stands I'm going to now.

Honestly, I dont get it. Why was this even dreamed up? The idea of the mission journal pointing you in the direction of the story is kinda cool, but giving you no option but to follow the long drawn out story, honestly is a bit ridiculous. I honestly am not going to subject myself to the grind every time I get a wild hair to try out a new idea and level a toon. Thats exactly what you've created with this linear story progression. Now if its just in tribble to test fine, but if its going live, I foresee nothing but problems. If it does go live, I for one wont be creating any new toons to play, matter of fact i'll be deleteing all of my low end non-end game toons leaving me with a whole 7 characters instead of something in the neighbor hood of mid to high teens.

Personally i'd rather go deal with the attitudes in WoW then being stuck with linear story progression. Since I got my fed to VA i've not touched a single story mission, not even the former "Featured Episodes" which i did enjoy playing and still do from time to time on holodeck until its gone. As it stands as soon as this TRIBBLE goes live i dont think i have a single toon that can pick and choose what missions to play as i've never fully gone through the entire story line on one toon, I have over all but not once on one single toon, well Maybe my eng vulcan main, but that'd be about it. I honestly find alot of them to be, no offense, boring and tedious. I'm not looking for constant killing, constant explosions. A little mystery and suspense helps. Like the devidian episode, "what lies beneath" I found that one quiet entertaining, the running around got a bit tedious but it made up for with an excellent story.

I didn't pay a LTS and buy the game for another single player campaign game, I've got enough of those. MMO's aren't and haven't been built that way. Why do it now? Honestly.

Nuff said, i'm done. Thx for reading and all that.

An idea was brought up in the jupiter force round table that i totally agree with.

I like how the missions are grouped into the different fronts (klingon, romulan, etc) but we need the option to switch between them and go back to finnish others as we want. The forced linear progression turns it into a grind fest. I hit VA and had just finnished the Romulan arc but stiil needed to do the cardasian arc before i could access the borg missions. Which meant slugging thru another half dozen missions to access the borg stfs.
We need more flexibility in what order we want to play them not what cryptics wants us to play them.

I think the best compromise might be that once a set of stories is "unlocked" by one character, it is unlocked for all characters on the account. That way, the first time you play a faction, you are forced to play through the each set of stories in a linear fashion, but when you create a new character, you are not forced to play like that. That way, you can save the feature episodes until you reach VA (for instance) so you do not have to replay them to get their high-end gear for a second character.

nah the best compromise is a hybrid of the system they have in place and one theyre trying to put in place...namely, arcs are linear within their own arc...thats it, and i think thats what theyre planning on doing, but for the tribble roll-out theyre just checking things and messing to see if it would work or not....i hope.

id like to see some more story branching-like adding side missions to explain in more detail things that are just brushed on in the arc, and alternate endings myself. im a big fan of choose your own adventures
