I see alot of people making arguments for and against gating crafting using dilithium over other methods. I just wanted to say that I have played most MMOs that have been released since 1998. I have had my hard core play all the time era and now I play as much as I can because of work and family responsibilities. What I have now that I did not have in the old days is disposable income. I play star trek currently because I feel it gives me greater reward for my time than other MMOs, I get more carrots from the stick here than I do from other games. I subscribe and I also spend a fair amount of additional money on the c-store for toys.
If the developers keep pushing this game in the direction of costing me more time and money, of which i spend a good deal, if the fun and rewards for my time continue to dissapear in favor of grind and nickle and diming me for every little thing, I will not continue to spend money on this title.
The direction of FTP overall was very interesting and appealing, it is rapidly losing that appeal.
here here... it's amazing how a small tweak to the crafting system can suggest so much about the future of the whole game!
I hope, for the sake of Cryptic and the Star Trek loving MMO community, that the game is NOT heading in that direction. It would be a shame to see an MMO with such an important IP to fail due to poor business decisions.
I expect that some of these changes are the influence of PW. I hope this is as far as the nickel and diming goes. For all I care, make content purchaseable, FE's for example, just don't take away the core game for the sake of cash!
Agreed. 1 or 2 of the changes aren't enough to push me away, but the combination of them surely will. So far the only good thing coming in FTP is the doff system which still seems very unfinished. While F2P is still in beta I have yet to see them adjust ANY of the bad changes in the right direction yet.
I don't want people to misunderstand. I completely understand that they need to make money, and that they have to tweak some systems to get people to spend money. I don't mind that. Just don't punch me in the nuts with blatant money grab mechanics. There are plenty of companies out there that moved to FTP and they are making good money without punching me in the nuts and because they don't punch me in the nuts, I still spend money with them.
You said it well, and I think most of the players that are aware of this issue agree with you. The crafting change is just a really bad bad idea, hopefully someone over at cryptic will figure that out before its too late.

This is the same exact reason that SOE's NGE failed in such a manner as it did. It was all inclusive, it got everyone, at least somewhere. After Cryptic's F2P goes live will the term NGE now be known as "Next Generation Enhansments"?

But there is a way to get the added/take away development they want (CHANGES) and still leave the existing players to the game they have become used to. Use the EQII model of F2P. Launch tribble as the F2P server with all these CHANGES heading to the C-Store included therein and leave holodeck alone, via the CHANGED economy/take away CHANGE model. As F2P players subscribe, they can join the Holodeck server.
IMHO, this will basicly kill STO is a very few months time. They couldn't have had worse timing with all of this due to the launch of TOR. There will be another option for a sci fi game with a standard 15 p/mo payment plan without really anything leading you to a store if you don't want to go that route for just cosmetics.
I agree, they shouldn't be taking away from our experience. And this is a fact that more and more people are starting to see with all the information, and lack thereof, that is floating around. Opinions are most definatly changing.
What I don't think that Cryptic, or its "Defense League" is getting, is that the players who were the "silent minority" are now becoming a very vocal Majority. I only hope they see our comments for what they actually are:
Us voicing that we don't want to see this game turn into a money grab, then to die or barely cling to life.
