Random Crashing / Version Mismatch Errors

SystemSystem Member, NoReporting Posts: 178,019 Arc User
My game will crash to desktop randomly on me no matter what I'm doing in-game. Sometimes after a minute or two and sometimes after a few hours. I will also get a Version Mismatch error at random even when the game client is fully patched and up to date. Other games play fine.

What I have done:
ALL my drivers are up to date for ALL hardware.
Windows 7 is fully up to date at the time of this post.
DXDIAG reports no problems on the 32bit and 64bit scans.
HDD is not fragmented and has had a full CHKDSK scan as well with no errors.
RAM has been tested with no errors.
Firewall is setup to allow any and all communication that STO needs/wants.
Patching on demand is disabled, client is fully patched.
Client is a fresh install.
Client is set to run as Administrator with visual themes disabled.
Attempted the skip 64bit check command with no luck.
Game graphics are set to recommended.
All advanced graphic options are controlled by the client and not the video card software.
Forced verify file scan after every crash.
No hardware is over clocked.

EDIT: Game is installed in C:\Program Files (x86)

System:
Windows 7 64bit
AMD Phenom II X6 1055T
8GB DDR3 Corsair RAM
AMD Radeon HD 6800 (1440x900 @60hz) AMD Catalyst 11.9 Drivers
1TB eSATA HDD
Onboard Realtek HD Audio
CPU, Video and RAM are all water cooled. Overheating is not an issue and has been checked anyways.

Sadly I cannot get into any more detail then I already have. Any help is appreciated.

DXDIAG is attached.

on vista and win7 the game can have problems if installed in Programs Files folder.
    Quote from coderanger....

Fun fact, the game will break pretty frequently if you install to Program Files under Vista or Win7 because of a new security feature called Virtual Store (short version: it intercepts and rewrites file writes inside prog files to go somewhere else). That is why it is no longer the default install location on those platforms. There is no permanent way to disable this feature of Windows, so installing outside of Program Files is the best option. The "correct" place according to MS for this would be C:\ProgramData, but more games use Users\Public\Games that we wanted to go with the clearer one. The More You Know.

    Thank you for the reply.

I originally had the game installed in Users\Public\Games but the crashing to desktop was still occurring, so I installed to a different location just to try something new and different. As a matter of fact, I just tried to log in now, set a automated course for SOL space and 2 minutes later crashed to desktop.

There are Catalyst 11.10 "Preview/Beta" drivers but I was reading that they have conflicts with Logitech G15 keyboards, so I cannot even try those to see if it makes a difference.

is there anything listed in the crash, error, shutdown log files located in teh cryptic studio folder and in the /live/logs/gameclient folder

latest entries are at the end of the file. format yymmdd time

also you could try in window mode lower scrren size and add the -console to the launcher advance command option to have a console window runing that shows what the client is doing. (use window mode so you can see the console the same time you are playing) hopefully you can catch the last action before the crash.

Shutdown.Log and Crash.Log only have 1 line in both and they are the same:

    111009 11:07:56 37 Client[0]: GSM_Quit(). Reason: emEditorMain or utilitiesLibShouldQuit()

Thanks again for the follow up Pegasus.

EDIT: I tried the window mode with the console, everything was going well, until I got the CTD error. All the console said was "Game Crashed!". There were no errors during the loading of the game etc...

Could my mouse be a possible factor? I have a Logitech G700 Gaming Mouse that does 1000 reports/sec. Could a high report rate be too much for the client to handle? I'm honestly out of options to try here on my side and I really cant see this being a fault with my hardware/software by now...
