The Duty Officer system: Well done!

SystemSystem Member, NoReporting Posts: 178,019 Arc User
I just wanted to say that. With all the uproar over the economy, dillithium, and ship acquistion and my own part in criticizing it I kind of over looked the beauty and elegance of this feature.

Heretic and crew from one Trekkie to another I applaud you on the creation of ths system. While there are minor kinks to work out it was wonderfully conceived and executed. The diversity of assignments is simply staggering. Some of the reward are really cool. I too managed to acquire my El-Aurian bartender. The xp issue some have mentioned is a minor thing compared to the over all quality of this system.

Well done!

The Doff system would be perfect save two things. It needs to be introduced earlier, like LT 5 or 6 and there needs to be thought given to expanding it for high level players. Once a Player reaches Rear Admiral Lower Half, the Doff System needs to adapt and go into end game mode where as a Admiral Players can promote Doffs to Captains and give them ships and send them on missions and essentially expand DOFFs to Fleet Control mini game. It doesnt even need to change much, there doesnt need to be actual npcs or ships, just add in ship cards and also for promotion to captain and at every rank of Admiral allow more DOFFs to be promoted to Captain.

At least high level players will have more content even if its a mini game. Besides if your a Admiral who wouldnt love sending your DOFF on Patrol Missions and such like you had to go through when you were a lowly young Captain lol.

Oh I agree with that. You have to admit thought for an initial release this was really really well done.

Yeah the Doff system is by far my favourite part of the tribble changes so far.

When it goes live i'm definately going to be trying to level a new toon solely with the Doff system.

Didn't this latest patch lower the doff system to LT5 or 6? I hear there's a bug where you don't actually get your first batch of Doffs until Lt Cdr 2, but theoretically I think it's already been lowered to mid Lieutenant.

Correct went down to level 8 but there is a bug preventng you from getting your Doffs from the initial mission but theoretically you could still do assignments if you bought some off the c-store.

Thats great! Then yes, Well done, thats one of my gripes down. Hoefully it means for Season 5 or something Cryptic will work on the Fleet Expansion to the Doff system for high level players. An Admiral Without a Fleet, even a small one is no admiral at all.

I absolutley love this idea. Your right, it really does not need to change much, it just needs captains/ships instead of Duty Officers. I really really like this idea.

The Doff system is currently the brightest spark in the murky f2p beta. Fortunately for the beta, it's a very, very bright spark indeed. Heretic has done a fantastic job putting this together, even with the bugs, and on occasion, confusing mission layout.

I can neither confirm nor deny the existence of discussions to expand the duty officer system into fleet and starbase operations, as well as higher commendation tiers that might or might not be required for said completely theoretical systems.

I think the idea of advancement categories that break us off into subclasses would be great and if I could re-design the game in retrospect, well...

Admiral wouldn't be a rank. Captain 1-21 would be the final rank structure. Admiralty would be part of an alternate advancement chain for Captains who choose to specialize in Duty Officer play, Fleet Captains would be a branch focusing on Fleet Actions and team-based activities, Colonel or Deputy Director would be a PvP advancement, etc.

The idea being, everyone is a Captain and has all of these play systems but you can tack on an added specialization that renames what the post-Captain title is for you.

Admiral would simply be a sign of being a Captain who is an expert paper pusher.

Y'know, forget retrospect: I'm suggesting you look into this now. You're changing how rank ups work dramatically enough in F2P that replacing VA 1 with Captain 21 could actually be done in this transition.

you sir are brilliant, and I am hiring you right now!!!

THIS PLEASE. A mini game would be cool, but it would be EVEN cooler if their assignments were tracked data-wise and of course culled so as not to bog down the server, but if you flew to the system of the assignment, you'd see your duty officer dude in the system getting his *** kicked!

and if they can die, that would be even cooler, you'd not want them to die, your little pets!
You'd save all the special rare ones and send the red shirt guys to die, like the shows, where the stars live :P

Please do expand them! I have been begging for off screen assignments that I, as an Admiral, can assign to Captains, and their ships, under my command. Now that I am playing the DOff system, I can see it is simultaneously exactly what I would have wanted and better than anything I would have guessed possible in STO.

The last related feature I would like to see is pet ships, under your Admiral's command, accompanying you in some space missions, like BOs in space.

The game suffered greatly from there being no difference in missions between Ensign and Vice Admiral. It seems Vice Admirals still need to go out and scan 5 flowers. The stakes never rise, the scope never increases. I hope the DOff system helps that.

Keep up the fantastic work. This is exactly what STO needs.

I like this. it would be good to have a fleet leveling system and maby some buffs to unlock for fleets. i have seen things like that in other mmo's

Agreed!! There's some good testing left to do with this and details to refine and fix, but it's an awesome system. I really feel like the master and commander of a complex vessel, now. Way to go on this, I can't wait to start playing with it in Live, once we've got the details sorted. :)

I just wish the system had a more distinct name.. Boff vs Doff..

Reminds me of all the trouble I have here in the forums trying to understand if BoP means "Bind on Pickup" or "Bird of Prey",

GREAT idea (for a fleet mini-game)!

Im still thinking the DEVS have a LOT planned for the Doff system. This is just the start.

And I second the orignal poster... I think after tweaking and testing and tweaking, this is going to be as big of an update as CROSSFIRE was (or bigger).

ROFL... Heretic is being...shall we say ...Cryptic here :)

Awesone news...Im REALLY excited to see what direction all this is going to take. Naysayers aside if F2P brings in more buisness (and capital to invest) to enable the DEVS to make more cool content... sign me up!

While I find the Doff system engaging and quite satisfactory in its initial form, I would still like to see a Doff store for common white specialty classes, even if access to the store is limited to some mission being successfully completed.

Agreed! The Doff system is AWSOME ! Can't wait to get it for my holodeck characters and I'm also look forward to any expansions on the system that may or may not be in the works. I however don't believe that the c-store accurately reflects my spending habits... I buy alot of stuff on the c-store, mostly uniforms, ships, and slots. But on the F2P beta pretty much all I have and will continue to spend my stipend on will probably be doff pack, for the most part at least I feel why worry about that other stuff if I won't be keeping my charactor .

So thanks for the great work heretic , the system looks great!

Just wanted to add my support for the current Doff system. :D

I've been in a few betas so I know enough not to get riled by the current economy (never been in a beta where things haven't changed drastically), but I have to agree that the Doff's make the current build a lot more pleasant. Honestly, there isn't really anything that I would change about it right now, tho there is plenty of room for expansion. Hopefully, lots of expansion :p

Nice work people, give every one that worked on it a gold star!

    Just asking the questions -

    1. Under this new DOFF system are we able to level up our DOFF's? It would make sense to have your DOFF that are labled as "common" level up like our captains do.

Example: You take your common DOFF and send them on assignment, your DOFF would get skill points depending on the chance of success (Critical Success or Success), or wrote up for failure or disaster in turn losing skill points or ranking points.
As they hit level 10 and rank up there picture color would then change to a uncommon green, and when they achieve 10 more levels they switch to rare blue, and then to very rare purple.

    2. Under each and every DOFF I would like to see all of there "Chances of success" # and or % of critical success, # of success, # of Failures, and # of disasters and what they did for the assignment. Resume!!! This would help in trading or dissing.

    3. Have your purple DOFF hold "assignments" training classes to help rank up your lower DOFF's.

    4. Foundry DOFF assignments: Have Foundry creaters make DOFF assignments that we can import into our system.

    5. I would like to pick a special task myself and assign a DOFF (Ad hoc) fix. Is what I mean is select any part of your ship and see if they can upgrade that componet. Example: Select your ship and a list of ship parts would show up (warp nacelles, deflector shield, weapons, etc) veiw status of the componet, you would select what you wanted to do with that componet repaired, upgraded, or replaced.

    6. I would like to see that after you have been part of a epic battle using the Difficulty Advanced & Elite settings. That you could use your DOFF to repair your ship and or have your Chief medical DOFFs heal you. This would also be apart of the Chance of success. Lets say that you had a critical health issue with your captain, and you assigned your DOFF to heal you. The health issue would be down graded from critical to major, minor or healed, depending on the success and selection of your DOFF's. Also could be the same process with your ship.

GREAT JOB CYPTIC ON THE DOFF SYSTEM!!!!!

The Duty Officer system is a great addition to the game.

I can't wait for it to go onto Holodeck.
