Automatic Sector Travel - PLEASE NO!

SystemSystem Member, NoReporting Posts: 178,019 Arc User
[*]Automatic Sector Travel
  • The first few federation missions now have a “warp to” button in the mission journal.
  • This button allows players to warp directly to the starting location for that mission.
  • Players must be on that mission to use the button
  • Players that choose to use the warp button will be charged Energy Credits based on the mission starting location.
  • This feature will be added slowly to every episode in the game.

Please, please for the love of god, DO NOT ADD THIS.

I took it to a different thread so as to not derail the primary thread, but this is ridiculous.

I can understand adding this to the first few missions, but allowing people to just insta-travel to any mission is just wrong. Is this not about exploration? People should have to travel across the galaxy, that's part of the charm of the game in my opinion.

Again, you can keep it for the first few missions (though I'm even hesitant on that, as its the introduction, and it can baby the new players).

I'd like to hear other players opinion on this all.

    I'm of two minds.

On one hand, it's very convenient. "Oh, I just leveled up. I can transwarp to Quinn, then warp back to where I was." It also takes out that 'time sink' element that Travel always seems to be. I'd rather actually be playing then be traveling somewhere to play. And, starter ships are soooo sllooooow anyway.

On the other hand, yeah, you do miss the 'wonder' of going through space.

Of course, maybe it's a bug, but I noticed it didn't work if you were already in the same sector as the mission. It only seemed to work when the mission I could travel to was in a different sector block. And, lets also face it that unlike other MMOs, one sector block looks exactly like another. There's really no variation on 'terrain'. So, there's just nothing to look at while travelling really, unlike in other MMOs that have 'scenery'.

So yeah. I like it, but I'm also not sure that I really do.

I too of two minds of it.

1, It does detract from the "wonder" of travelling thru space.

    2. It does help provide an EC sink.

Check my Sig for another EC sink Idea.

I really enjoyed earning my transwarps through Diplomacy rank-ups, and then semi-freaked when I started flying the Excelsior and started making use of that. I really miss it with my KDF characters, and plan to rank up Marauding just for the sake of that.

Transwarps are great. They're a fun perk a an accomplishment, and good-value for a C-Store item (and its old price, anyway). Normally I'd say that flying from one end of the galaxy to the other just for the sake of it is totally boring (and an opportunity to go make a sandwich), but we already have a fast-travel mechanism. Let's keep the value in it!

Yes the idea is not a good one, all that work into making Sector space look good then the possibility of making space an one giant zone snubs that effort if you pay to insta warp everywhere.

Give us Warp Engines to fit onto our ships that adjust the speed we travel at maybe or boost the speeds we can travel at including the likes of Interspatial Warp Drives and Transwarp Features you can add onto your ship to go from place to place but not mission point to mission point.

Far more innovative ways of making money in STO rather than scratching up a Tardis that is fed energy credits wrong IP Cryptic.

I'm fine with it. Another EC sink for our currently overbloated EC economy (another being the increased need for commodities for DOff assignments, although that has a potential for increased future return as well), although I do have to wonder what the prices will be, especially toward endgame.

During the early game, players have to balance their EC a lot until about mid-LCDR, where suddenly we start gaining tons of EC as the junkloot we toss in our replicators gets more and more lucrative. By the time players gather enough EC that spending it on a transwarp isn't an issue, they've probably already explored the area and/or won't use it unless it's jumping into a zone for a daily/STF or replaying a mission (although, I imagine the dailies that you have to "find" like the Aid the Sh'mar or Aid Deferi Patrols won't have these transwarps associated with them).

Also, since you have to have a mission to transwarp to the area, it's probably a bit of a hassle to use it for free transport like the transwarps we earn from diplomacy or the purchase of an Excelsior.

It should be in the game. It doesn't make you use it, Its there as an option. And there is times when I would like that option. If you don't like it don't use it.

Kind of seems to be the opposite of the DOFF system which essentially rewards you for travelling through the sectors.

Oh look another money sink to grind for
Won't be using this at all. I like my giant pile of EC, Dilithium when it gets converted, as it is.

Actually, I've noticed that I'm not really using it. Travel time is an *excellent* time for me to send my DOFFs out on missions, especially since the missions change from sector block to sector block. By the time I've traveled through one block, I've got missions sent out.

So, yeah. interesting idea, won't be using it when I have DOFFs to work on.

If anything, 1) Increase warp speed at lower levels, 2) force the lower ranks to continue traveling through sector space, and 3) make this insta-travel option available at Admiral level. Otherwise, I say put it in place and let people use it if they want.

Especially at the lower levels, the travel is interesting. It's just so incredibly slow until you hit Commander. It's a huge waste of time, and like was said... I'd rather be playing than traveling somewhere to play. Especially with my VAs. I've already flown through sector space thousands of times. It's now either time for checking e-mail or getting a snack. it's only wonderful for the first few ranks of your first character. When the DOff system is live, I imagine I'll enjoy it a little more, but will I really have enough DOff duties to keep me interested for even a trip from K-7 to Psi Velorum? At the current speed of DOff assigments, probably not.

I don't mind it as an option, there will be damned little choice if F2P goes through in its current incarnation so every little choice is an improvement but I won't be using it personally, Star Trek without travel simply isn't Star Trek.

I dont understand the point in restricting other people who may not have the time but want to get that mission in (and pay EC to do so) before RL obligations pull them away.

If you don't like it and want to keep the charm of exploring space, then just don't use it.

I think it will be great for getting me to do some replays without having to spend all that time getting to the mission on my limited time schedule.
