I'm trying to re-install STO on my girlfriend's laptop. Just did a complete re-installation of her Vista system to remedy another recalcitrant software problem. STO worked previously, not now. System - Dell Inspiron 1520, Vista sp2, IE9, Kapersky internet security.
I read other posts on the subject - I tried disabling the Kapersky during re-download of patch. Also, other posts' error messages refer to specific files.
Another problem is girlfiend has only 5GB monthly allowance - already exceeded on first day!
Could the problem be with the initial download rather than the patch? I haven't tried downloading that with Kapersky disabled.
If I redownload the client and/or run the full patch (dynamic patching off. Took 3 hours :eek:), I can play one session. Maybe two...
But if I go do something else for a while, it starts crashing again with this error.
Verifying doesn't help, either.
It's the same error (Error decompressing data. Try verifying. blablabla bad CRC, blablabla),
but with a different file every time, mostly texture or object files, though.
When it doesn't crash, though, it runs beautifully.

E.G. All borg space levels, several ground levels, etc.
Verify does not fix it, patching is stalled after each error.
E.G. I cannot patch after each error and must restart my computer to run the patcher.
When the patcher stalls it says: "Patching" and does not patch.

I made a fresh installation from the game disc and re-downloaded the patch - now works. Differences - installation from game disc not download, Kapersky was disabled during installation and patch, file location programs folder not user folder.
using the program folder for the game under vista and win7 will cause problems with the game.

Whatever caused the decompression error is still there though. I'm getting it every time I get close to an Anomalous Technological Reading.
