As of LT 7 I have no dilithium so I thought I would try the history 101 to get my 16. Alas that just made me turn the game off. My experience: I was instructed to get a data chip from some place that I knew not where. Unless you zoom in on the mini map and look closely there is no indication as to where to go to get a data chip. However, there is a circle to show where to take the actual test (102) So thus armed with nothing i took the test and guessed. I guessed wrong. I could then drop that mission and retake the test. however I could not retake the 101 mission to get the data chip. Thus it was going to be another choose one of the three and since my only option was to take, guess wrong, drop, take guess wrong, drop and hope for the best I simply decided there was a better use of my time and turned the thrice damned thing off.
So to sum up. There is no indication at all as to where to get the data chip, whatever that may be. Without said data chip the second part is a choose one of three answers and hope for the best. The second part is repeatable, whereas the first is not. As it stands the whole thing is quite frustrating and really makes me never want to set foot in the academy again. While i do acknowledge that I may simply have misunderstood pretty much everything that is how it comes across to me at the moment. Hope this is of some help and perhaps I will play gain tomorrow. Though honestly, not at the academy.
Just watch out, the question you get isn't necessarily from a chapter you already have, which is quite stupid since there is no other possibility to get the correct answer then.(Except asking in Zone chat and hoping that someone already has it)
The lore questions in this game are all rather easy. Anyone who knows anything about star trek should be able to eliminate at least 1 of the 3 possible answers easily. Try carefully reading the questions and the possible answers.
I agree that most lore should be pretty easy, however, there are some rather obscure questions that can come up that stump even a Star Trek Wiki page. I do think though that they need to have the Accolades for reading the data chips sortable from the other Accolades so that you can actually reference the chapter the question in the quiz is referring to with out sorting through a long log list.
I just did this for the first time. Did some wandering around myself. I honestly don't like this approach at all. While wandering I thought it was odd that we need a datachip to get the historical information. Where are the Academies version of the Klingon Loresinger? Why not a mini-lecture inside one of the classrooms? Pick any of the blue doors that currently lead to unmapped areas of the main building. Rotate through your Dev names as guest lecturers who recite a few random points from the Path to 2409? Key the mission to require the character to actually have to sit down in a classroom seat for at least 30 seconds. After 30 seconds, the mission can complete and trigger you to take a test. If they don't stick around long enough to hear the plot points? Oh, well. But at least do something more academic than 'find the datachip' or 'find the oddly placed consoles'.
I'd also add there is no need to go outside the game to get the information from STOwiki or STO website when the information should be found easily within the game. Right now the information would be found on the datachips. So is in the game. Just not immediately obvious how to obtain the one you need.
If the F2P game is really going to stay with the original tutorial, why waste the Academy social zone further by not, as I suggested, using lecturers to interpret the history? I'd take my idea further and suggest that sitting in a lecture hall be a mission requirement. If for no other reason than to learn to sit. We shouldn't be able to take the daily test (and get your 16 dilithium) without jumping through the hoops each time. No skipping straight to the test.
I just wondered around until I found it, inside by the counter. It is pretty vague, I agree with OP.
BUT, that brings up the veryyyy old question of...there is NO written game directions for STO as of yet...there is "Wiki STO" but really nothing in print or on a "Official" website to tell you how to play this game in detail... Its a Zone ask, "Help em please" game...
@ is Quarks....by 1000's of new F2P players...
We could just be jerks and say...look it up...HOWEVER...there is NO WHERE to look it up...thats Official Cryptic/STO information...
Yes I know about the "basic" directions menu on the STO homepage....that fills about half a page on the Wiki STO homepage...pfffft
Soooo in closing....as usual, we will have to depend on hard core players that have endured many frustrating hours doing missions over and over again, to create websites that give us second hand, albiet very accurate info, all done on their RL time, so that the many, may have an enjoyable gaming experience.
I would just like to say...Thank You...to those individuals that have done what Cryptic should have done already.
I hope I am wrong and somebody will correct me....this thread sorta of opened up a old wound for me...sorry for the rant.
Was I bugged I didn't know where to go at first? Yes. But your tricorder usually tells you where the next active item is, including the data chips and memorial plaques at SFA.
Is there an actual item that you guys are interacting with? There's a tiny diamond shape on my Academy map that's listed as some kind of computer and when I stand near it, I get the option to continue the History 101 mission, but I see nothing*. The computer for 102 shows up just fine, but I'm interacting with empty air for the other one.
If you're stumped, searching on Memory Alpha and/or STO Wiki can help.
* I didn't type that with a German accent because I wanted it to be legible, but I can't read, write, or say that phrase without thinking of Sergeant Schultz.
The data chip thing is most confusing. You take it, and then.... ?
I click "use" and it's gone, and I have no clue what it was supposed to have done. Why do we want data chips? If they provide knowledge, just how does one access it?
I figured I could do the lore mission if I when to this web site. I just wanted to see if the game itself gave a clue about them. It does not. Starfleet Academy is a waste to me.
And what are all those irritating orbs about anyway???

I was unsure that this would work, but it does.
