Original thread (
here) was closed for being to petitiony. So like a Phoenix from the ashes it rises anew and completely petition-free (and far easier to see than the cursor in STO).
So really, it is long past time to change the cursor to something without a cloaking device on it that us aging Trek fans can see. I'm thinking a gold combadge for Feds and a white d'k tahg for the KDF. Or maybe a horga'hn for the Feds and a scabrous severed Fed hand for the KDF. What do you guys think? Suggestions? Comments?

Priority One - Interview with dStahl
Episode 48 - Surprise Goodbyes

i managed to sneak in the question about the Mouse Cursor (its somewhere at the end).
dStahl started talking about FX drop... as if it was the fault of the Videocard that the mousecursor was not drawn on the screen -> not the issue at all -> the man was completely unaware of this long standing issue :-(
It is really just that the thing is small and dark and my (our) eyes loose track of it.
The Host of the show then said "just make the thing bright orange".
THAT is exactly what we are requesting here.
@StormShade:
(in case you even read this)
you are the community representative, right?
that means you are supposed to "represent" the "community" ....to the Dev's (and vice versa), right? (stop me if i'm wrong here)
How about, you give the UI Dev (the one that never looks in the forum here) a call and tell him that the Users can't see his crappy mouse cursor and he should make the thing bright orange and twice the size.
...or at least make a note and bring it up in the next weekly meeting.
THANKS IN ADVANCE FOR NOT IGNORING THE ISSUE AND NOT JUST SHUTTING US UP!
I have a comment, cursors can't be faction specific.
Then why not a simple "Cursor Brightness" stting for the people having trouble seeing it?
Can it be bigger?
that's what she said
If you have/use Window's go in to your mouse options and look for the "show location of mouse cursor when i press the CTRL key" and click the box to enable.
But, sadly, this site has gone the way of the dodo because of negative reactions received by the owner and, well, because those reactions made him quit the game. The files may still be out there... but I couldn't find them.
note: this wasn't considered hacking, and it was allowed by dev's at the time. Though they stated they couldn't provide any support if you messed something up.
I really wish we could get a nice bright cursor like that site used to have. We know it isn't hard, just kick out a few colors and shapes, and if you really have to, sell the pack in the C-store
heh the guy above me beat me to it.as I was writing:)
When in doubt make a CStore item!
The Brightness isn't the only problem. For those of us who run the game at higher resolutions the mouse is way too small and honestly its also a bad color because white blends in with a lot of the effects when any high level bloom lighting is being used.
Moreover, this single brave person PROVED that it was a SIMPLE fix.
There is no excuse for this not being available.
It's not about having a good monitor and eyesight, it's more to do with the grey cursor being lost in the background.
For example, I play STO at 1900x1080 resolution on a 22" flat screen monitor through a HDMI cable. The image on screen is crystal clear but the mouse cursor is tiny and grey which leads to it being lost on occasion, usually on ground maps but occasionally in space too; STFs are a particularly bad spot for me as the brighter background colours are very effective at masking the cursors location.
Just being able to make the cursor a little brighter would help, a huge garish mouse cursor is not what anyone wants but not being able to activate a buff on myself or someone else because of a cursor is just tedious.
I don't remember any negative comments against the guys work... however I do a remember an atmosphere where the community managers of this game "looked away" whenever his work was mentioned. Unfortunately too many questions in too short a period of time on these forums meant that it could no longer be ignored and the Community managers were forced to "clarify" the rules set out in the TOS/EULA regarding third party modifications. In response the person in question took the site down, purely to protect his game and forum account against any official action that could have been taken.
A real shame, especially as some of the work he had done with his mods for the game (at the time) were fantastic, I believe that his sector space mod helped spur on and inspire the devs to change sector space in to what we have now.
A bigger cursor, not huge, just big enough, with a better colour or colour options so that the player can adjust the cursor to make it a lot easier to see would be very helpful.
And why not faction cursors? Birth Of The Federation did that really well with each faction having a cursor that fit the faction. Surely CBS wouldn't begrudge having a Starfleet symbol for the Federation and a Klingon symbol for the Klingons, it would fit with the factions just right.
Okay, so no faction-specific cursors. I think most people could live with that seeing as how we don't have that now. Obviously making the cursor bigger and brighter is possible. Is this something that Cryptic would consider doing? Also, is a selectable cursor something that could be done, such as a bigger, brighter cursor and the current one (I'm thinking not seeing as you can't have faction-specific cursors but it can't hurt to ask)?
And thanks for poking your head in here. I'd give you an apple as a token of appreciation but I see that you, um, already are one.

But, I'm fifty-something-mumble...
and even with new glasses and a 50" LED Screen I still had trouble seeing the dang official one and could NOT play the game at times...
So I did something about it so I could ...
Sue me.
This is rediculous...
What the heeel is wrong with you game designers??
Ya know We're ALL Not fresh from the Academy.., Right?
Git off yer high-horses and do something about the ding-dang cursor!!!
Never mind what it can and can't do... Just Fix It!!!
<grumble... grumble... grumble>
/old man:mad:vent
This is true. No other element of the UI has ever disappeared or been lost.
which is even more reason why i expect CRYPTIC to fix the issue, so people don't get suckered into violating their rules.
it's pathetic enough that users can fix it easily on their own but aren't allowed to.
...
of course Cryptic + PW could easily change those rules, the "no reverse engineering" thing was introduced by the reworked ATARI rules anyway... i would not be sad to see those go away.
*meh*
fix it!
personally i rather have some people complaining about a new big mouse cursor that is big+ugly than have people complaining that they cant see the damn thing in hectic situations
1. People have been complaining about UI issues since the beginning, the cursor being one of the cheif complaints among them.
2. Cryptic has done a few UI modifications, however most of these were not of the basic UI but of the various menus in the game.
3. Cryptic apparently cannot use multi-color lcars and is locked into smurf lcars by constipated businessmen at CBS. (I remember seeing this on a thread sometime ago, correct me if I'm wrong.)
4. Cryptic must know that it would be quite simple just to change the mouse cursor, like make it 50% bigger or something, but for some reason that I cannot fathom they're just not doing anything about it.
5. The small cursor problem apparently has been fixed by a client side mod for quite a while.
6. The small cursor can be fixed by playing the game at a lower resolution, those of you playing the game at 1080p on your HDTV like me can drop it down to 720p. The game doesn't look as good but it's not too terribly bad. I pity those of you that are playing on an even higher resolution like say, 2560x1600, ouch.
Those are by means no where near all of the points but meh.
Cryptic, don't be like CCP and take YEARS to fix this like their font problem. WHICH YOU STILL CAN'T RE-SIZE. I mean, seriously what IS the problem. Is it a problem with CBS? Was it a problem with ATARI? Are you guys just pointing and laughing at the forums and reveling in our frustration? Can you not tell us what the problem is due to some legal reason? Why has this problem continued for this long, are there just not enough people complaining? "Insert Deity Here" forbid we actually get an answer here.
this question is theoretically interresting for me as well...
Theoretically, the instructions should be in the zip file
Any kind of ability to alter the size/color of the current cursor would be helpful. I have a visual disability so I tend to lose where the cursor is during combat (especially space).
The modding community that a game like wow has would be great for this game.... If only Cryptic would allow 3rd party (non-cheating/botting/hacking/ect) modifications....
