I just got my Referral key today and my friend also got her key today also. We made our characters just fine and took our times in making them without any disconnecting. But when we enter the game within a few minutes or sometimes even less time, we then get words in red at the top of our screens saying "server not responding" with some number changing and we can not move. And then we get a screen that says "Disconnected from Server" and then we are taken to the login screen and and it says under Cryptic Login Protocol "Disconnected from Server" in the color red. Our proxy's was on none and then change it to US and also tried EU without any success. We are from the US. We always get disconnected on the same time. There is no way for us to play the game. I have Windows 7 and my friend has Window XP. We played other Online games without any problems and for Star Trek Online I can not figure out how to fix our problem. Did anyone have this problem before and if so how do we fix this disconnecting issue?

I tried what you said about the Launcher Options I checked these three things
check Fast launch
Check Show Tray icon
Check Disable on demand patching
But it still did not work. We still got disconnected. My friend and me tried turning off our Windows Firewall and played the game and we got disconnected just like before. It also happens right after we group up together too. It will happen also even if we are not group too. It's just we disconnect faster if we group, we instant disconnected when grouped. Also if either one of us visit the Tailor we will crash within minutes. We do not disconnect as fast if we do not do the above mentioned, we still get disconnected, but we last a little more longer. We also see right after we get disconnected, I logout and go to my internet I see my internet also gets disconnected too, but then it connects itself right away. It only happens when we play Star Trek Online, no other Online game does that. When Star Trek Online gets disconnected my internet goes too in the same time but only for a short time. And our internet is from Bright House and it is cable internet and it's a very fast internet. I am fine searching in the internet without any disconnection only when we play Star Trek Online.
Here's my System Specifications
*OS: Windows 7 Ultimate 32-bit
* CPU: Intel(R) Core(TM)2 Duo CPU E6850 @ 3.00GHz (2 CPUs), ~3.0GHz

Did someone ever have this problem and was able to fix it? There is no way for us to play STO without being disconnected. Please does anyone know how to fix this issue?
post the results of doing a tracert patchserver.crypticstudios.com and a nettest on both pcs
are you connected by wire to the router/modem or are you using a wireless connection.
For good connections, column 1 and 3 have values around 500 kb/sec (outgoing/incoming), column 2 has values around 20 kb/sec (transfer rate). If the values in these columns is less than what is expected you may have filtering or blocked ports either on your personal network or from your ISP.
each game uses different requirements so comparing one game with antoher is not vaiid.
this game required port 7000-7500 to be open and unfiltered other game may not use these ports.
Wireless all so Has a slow connection if your sharing with your friend most wireless routers only pump out about 10mb per sec and if your directly connected too the wireless into the back ports then you will get about 80% of the speed that comes out of the wireless router.
All so contact you IP too see what is going on with your cable modem have them run a scan on it you could have a bad box.
All so if you want too see how fast your ISP is Go too this site
I was reading up on your ISP seems they where having Power issues or some thing with there internet.I would call them up too check too see if you modem is ok.

One day after a widespread outage Tuesday, a spokesman for Bright House Networks said it had largely restored TV, Internet and telephone service to its more than 1 million customers in the Tampa Bay area.
But some people weren't buying it.
Ken Cunningham spent much of Tuesday and Wednesday calling Bright House customer service by cell phone, trying to get his online access and telephone service restored. Though a technician repaired the problems Wednesday evening, he was still determined to switch to rival Verizon FiOS.
"It seems that they don't always know what's going on," Cunningham said about the company's customer service representatives; his service was eventually restored after connecting with customer service late Wednesday afternoon. "It's frustrating because when there's problems, you lose everything."
The cable provider struggled Tuesday with widespread service outages that affected customers throughout the Tampa Bay area, cutting off telephone services (including credit card verification machines), Internet access and cable TV, including transmissions of its in-house cable news channel, Bay News 9.
Spokesman Joe Durkin blamed the problems on a "software bug" that began affecting systems, including Bright House's own phone lines, about 10:40 a.m. Tuesday. He declined to provide details on how the outage occurred and could not say how many of its customers were eventually affected, though the company said full service was restored about 5 p.m. Tuesday.
But on Wednesday, customers were still complaining of service problems and difficulties getting through to operators on customer service telephone lines.
George Harper said his 81-year-old mother lacked phone service into Wednesday evening at her home in Sun City Center, where other residents have similar complaints. Eventually, Harper gave her a cell phone so she could reach someone in an emergency when repeated calls to Bright House customer service would not go through.
"These people don't have any instructions on how to fix things and you can't get through to ask questions," said an exasperated Harper, who went to a Bright House office on Falkenburg Road in Riverview on Wednesday morning, but left because the line of customers waiting for help was too long.
At the Dolins Garden Center in St. Petersburg, owner Donald Prahl e-mailed the St. Petersburg Times in frustration Wednesday when he was unable to reach a Bright House representative by telephone or e-mail.
Prahl, who lives across the street from his business at 62nd Avenue N, had telephone service at home but no phones at his business. By 3 p.m. Wednesday, he had gotten a call from Bright House after a Times reporter alerted the company.
Prahl's problem: He hadn't rebooted the modem in his business when service was restored Tuesday.
"We probably could have had service yesterday afternoon if someone would have just told us how to fix it," said Prahl, who received a week of free service from Bright House for the inconvenience.
Bob Elek, a spokesman for rival Verizon FiOS, said its call volume had jumped 10 percent since Tuesday. "We're definitely hearing from people that they're having problems getting through to Bright House customer service, even today," Elek added. "They couldn't get a real sense of what was going on."
Durkin said Bright House was focused on taking care of its customers, not the competition.
"Our customers were inconvenienced and disrupted, and for that we apologize," he said. "We've also heard from customers who applauded our efforts. Many were understanding and patient with us, because of their history with us."

I'm having nearly identical issues. The game has been utterly unplayable since Thursday when they put up the message about the Global Chat servers being down.

I have tested with the firewall disconnected and it made no difference.

So nothing too worrying there, there's one backbone router where my ISP (Rogers) connects to Cryptic's ISP (Cogent) that's been set not to respond to ICMP packets, but excellent response time and no other lost packets there.
Since it's not constant, I decided to run a couple ping tests as well, here's the results from that:

I was also seeming symptoms in game that lead me to believe this is server side. I was getting stupid lag in the Bog Invasions (server not responding for 100+ seconds) and while it was happening the timer on my screen would continue to count down, when the "Server not responding" finished and everything rubber banded like crazy across the screen, the timer would also reset (say it had counted down from 6:45 to 5:30 while I was lagging, when the lag went away it would be back to 6:45). I can't believe that a problem with my internet connection could cause a timer on the server to stop timing.
I just came back to STO after an extended absence, I played for about 150days from Launch, and left for lack of content and server stability issues. While the former issue's been resolved, this new performance issue's got me wondering about the latter.
EDIT: and for completeness sake, this took 1 hour and 40-ish minutes:
I've been having the exact same issues, I played quite actively for a while when the game was launched, and there were stability issues but they were never as bad as this. Ever since I started playing again it's been a daily occurance, I can only play the game in short spurts. I've been checking my router settings, my windows network setup, I even short circuited my entire network and connected directly to the modem, nothing seems to help.

I really can't figure out what else I can do, I never had these kinds of issues with an MMO before, surely this can't be a local problem seeing all the posts with similar issues being made lately. My ISP is Tele 2 Netherlands.
Update: From the research I've been doing it seems this is all because of the Cogent part of the route between us and the Cryptic servers, not sure what anyone can do about that.

Maybe opening up Ports 7000-7500 can fix all of our problems. I been in Control Panel, but I can't find anything on how to open Ports for the game. Does anyone know how and where to open Ports for the game? I have Windows 7 and my friend has Windows XP.
Opening ports isn't really something done on your computer, except through your firewall, and it doesn't need ports opened, as pretty much any firewall of even moderate quality will identify traffic by the originating process (i.e. it's identifies "STO Client" instead of "port 7000")
If you have a router it may need ports opened, but if STO doesn't have uPnP I'd say something's wrong. (though if it's an old router it might not)
What they're really refering to is your ISP though. There are some ISPs who slow down certain types of traffic travelling through their network (the dastards!) under the premise that if that traffic is allowed to get out of control it would bog down their network. Basically they say that STO's performance and port range is similar to those of some P2P clients, so your ISP (Time Warner Roadrunner, I see from your tracert) might be flagging it as P2P traffic and slowing it down.
Having worked for Time Warner tech support in the past I can say conclusively that they do in fact do throttling on P2P traffic, but as a front line TS rep they didn't tell us shoot all about the details of how it worked, just that it worked, and to tell customers to stop stealing music. (without actually accusing people of stealing music)
It may not be Roadrunner though, one of the earlier posters stated it seemed to be an issue with Cogent, and trying now, I can't get their website to pull up in anything resembling a reasonable amount of time. And every tracert in this and other threads reporting problems is routing through Cogent. I'd be interested to see a tracert from someone not having these lag problems to see if they're routing through Cogent as well...
I'll go try to get into the game and pester my fleet about that.

I'm beginning to think it may be a combination of factors
I've noticed that at least 3 other ROGERS customers have the same issue currently. Perhaps we should organize guys, and try and tackle getting this issue resolved. Seriously. If you are a rogers customer, lets discuss calling these guys, and see if we can get this issue resolved.
I currently pay 99 bucks /mo for their 75mbit service. I'm willing to accept that they are going to throttle my torrents. But not Star Trek Online, which is a completely legitimate use of an internet connection. It really steams me.
LIke I said above, I don't think rogers is the issue. Yes, there's several rogers customers, but there's also a Florida Roadrunner, a "Versalink" out of the Netherlands, and if you check other threads reporting this "Telefonica" out of Germany, Sao Paulo Communications out of Brazil, and Cox Cable out of the States.
The common thread with these reports isn't the individual's ISPs, but with the second half of the trip, they all go through Cogent. Now, if Cryptic is a smart company (and they seem to be) they'll have multiple redundant connections to the outside world (if not multiple physical server farms) If the problems lying with one of those connections (specifically one run by Cogent) that would exzplain why some people are seeing this and other people are like "What, Lag? You crazy!"
I've been asking around to some people who I know are geographically near me and some have the same ISP, they have no lag at all in STO, no disconnects. They did some traceroutes and they all go over Cogent as well, so how is it that only a small group of players is affected by this?
Just because other users with the disconnect problem don't share my isp does not mean that rogers is not to blame. At this point there is something going on with rogers users, im pretty sure. I also suggest that others users may want to look into contacting their isps to figure out this issue.
I called my ISP and they checked my issues, they noticed similar issues with some tries they made on the Cogent hops, but bottom line, they can't do anything since the problem isn't on their end of the network, and they can't change the routing.
If rogers was the problem though it'd be affecting more than just Cryptic & Cogent, and so far that's the only thing I've had any problem with. ANd now we've got someone who confirms that their ISP is seeing issues with the Cogent leg of the trip as well.
What exactly's going on, I have no idea, but we've got a dozen accounts of identical issues (with varying degrees of severity), all starting at the same time (Thursday Evening), from several disparate ISPs (and geographic regions). Cryptic's technical team better look into this when they get in on Monday and get in Touch with Cogent to find out what's happening on Cogent's network.
Just for referance, here's a trace to Cogent's website with packet loss on Cogent's network:

Someone gave sent me this link to help me understand whats going on with my tracert.
I found it quite enlightening, maybe it will help one of you as well.
Tried the eu proxy, i seem to be able to play at the moment, although a bit more laggy. This is not really a solution, more of work-around i wish i would have figured out yesterday.
I was looking in my C:\Users\(where ever the game was installed)\Games\Cryptic Studios\Star Trek Online\Live\logs\GameClient I was trying to see if I can find anything about the disconnecting issue and I found a log called Clientservercomm.Log, I open it and it has some words and number. Here is what it says (I will only include the must recent text or else I would go over the 11000 characters long limit)

There was some numbers that I removed because I did not know if that was my Account number or some kind of IP number so I removed it from the text. For example it should really look like this
110912 20:09:05 16 Client[0]: GameServer link attempting connect 000.00.000.000:0000.
110912 20:09:05 17 Client[0]: GameServer link connected 000.00.000.000:0000.

It really did not have all 0 in the number, it had different numbers, but I did not know if those numbers should be private or public shown. Some reason for the shut down was because of gclChatConnect_Logout. I wonder if this has anything to do with the chat update that we patch and it is giving us problems. If this is the problem I hope cryptic can fix this problem that we are having.
I just got a reponse to the ticket I made about the issues, the CS person says I should contact my ISP and ask them to route my IP traffic through an alternate DNS, but I've already tried various DNS settings myself, including Google's DNS and OpenDNS. Nothing I tried resolved the unplayable rubberbanding, and the problematic Cogent hops. Meanwhile my ISP says there's nothing they can do since the problem isn't on their end of the connection. I'm about ready to give up and cancel my account.

Many were understanding and patient with us, because of their history with us."

you nettest is teribile. anytime you are less than 250 in columns 1 and three and less than 14 in column 2 you will likely have disconnect and lag problems.
your connection is being heavily filtered or throddle
if you can try connecting to your router/modem by wire to see if the reading improblem (to eliminate the wireless equipment)
if you have xfire or teamviewer running shut them down as they can prevent the game from working.

I've run the nettest tool provided by cryptic, it's been running for the past 10 minutes and this is what I've got so far:

And since I don't know the exact technology STO uses to move data around, here's a pingtest from pingtest.net (Speedtest.net's sister site):
I'm also up to 15 minutes on that nettest and have gotten this far:

I really can't figure out what else I can do, I never had these kinds of issues with an MMO before, surely this can't be a local problem seeing all the posts with similar issues being made lately. My ISP is Tele 2 Netherlands.
Update: From the research I've been doing it seems this is all because of the Cogent part of the route between us and the Cryptic servers, not sure what anyone can do about that.
here is my wired test results, my ISP tells me that if i am not using any P2P while trying to play i should not run in to any issues..... BS

the game uses ports 7000-7500 and uses a lot of small quick packet streams that some filter software can mis read as p2p traffic.

Maybe opening up Ports 7000-7500 can fix all of our problems. I been in Control Panel, but I can't find anything on how to open Ports for the game. Does anyone know how and where to open Ports for the game? I have Windows 7 and my friend has Windows XP.

Thoughts?
The common thread with these reports isn't the individual's ISPs, but with the second half of the trip, they all go through Cogent. Now, if Cryptic is a smart company (and they seem to be) they'll have multiple redundant connections to the outside world (if not multiple physical server farms) If the problems lying with one of those connections (specifically one run by Cogent) that would exzplain why some people are seeing this and other people are like "What, Lag? You crazy!"

I have submitted my support request. I now agree. Its not Rogers, its cogentco.com.
Lets get this issue fixed. Don't put up with these errors anymore. Ask for support today on this issue. Make sure to include your tracert results.
I found it quite enlightening, maybe it will help one of you as well.

110912 21:03:17 14 Client[0]: LoginServer link attempting: connect 000.00.000.000:0000
110912 21:03:22 15 Client[0]: LoginServer link disconnected 000.00.000.000:0000. Reason: bytes_xferred < 0 from safeRecv in bsdProcessPackets(0:No error) (socket error 0: No error)
