Grrr.... this sucks. But at least I have to give it to cryptic. Thank you guys for actually continuing to work on your game as much as you have. The bugs are annoying, but at least someone's there to fix them. (Bows to cryptic) You guys rock.
Oddly, I was just able to log into the editor. It crashed as soon as I clicked on a map name in the editor (not even trying to preview, just clicking on the map name).
We have temporarily disabled The Foundry on Holodeck. Thank you for your patience! ~The Star Trek Online Team
No need to thank me, because unfortunately I do not have any more patience after 6 months since the last featured episode and 2 more to go until the next
Seriously, despite the Devs saying it wouldnt be, the reality is the Foundry has been the only source of new mission content to this game for a very long time. Having it down is simply unacceptable. This is what happens when you have the Foundry turned off almost the entire time your testing S4 on Tribble; it doesnt get thoroughly tested and bugs like this make it live.

Seriously, the Foundry is the only source of new content to this game right now. Having it down is simply unacceptable. This is what happens when you have the Foundry turned off the entire time your testing S4 on Tribble; it doesnt get tested and bugs like this make it live.
As for the lack of content, I think that can be atributed entirely to Atari.
Something similar happened over at Turbine studios with their Dungeons and Dragons Online game.
For almost a year hardly anything new was added to the game. There was a severe lack of information from official sources, a lot of "vast and mysterious" answers were all the playerbase got when inquiring about what was happening and what the future would hold.
Well, lo and behold, Turbine was in a dual process of converting DDO over to a Free to Play model as well as negotiating a new deal to rid themselves of Atari as much as they could. Apparently the lack of content stemmed directly from this - most dev work was going into the conversion process.
In the end it worked brilliantly, they got out from under their Atari oppression and most importantly saw an increase in playership (and initial revenue) of TEN FOLD. The reason there was a huge lack of communictaion is because all the parties involved were bound by non-disclosure agreements at the time.
Was something like this happening with the whole Cryptic, Atari, and Perfect World change? Hard to say, but the similarities are there.
Be thankful that STO has a Foundry at all. Poor DDO had nothing new to play for almost a year.....
All this just as i start getting interested in the foundry. Don't know why i'm bothering to be honest.
Here's me DESPERATELY trying to keep my friends subbed by attempting to create some personalized mission content for them and almost the whole time i've been trying it's been so heavily bugged that it's either taken down or unusable.
I'm with Nagus on this one, no need to thank me. I think i'll just cut my losses and apologise to the friends i've gotten into STO so far and hope they forgive me.
As for the lack of content, I think that can be atributed entirely to Atari.
I dont, and here is why: if nothing at all had been done in the past 6 months, then it might make a little sense to say it was Atari's fault. However, things have been done. Alot of things. Just not any new content. So its not a manpower issue, its a priorities issue. Are SFA and the New Qo'nos great? Yes, but they dont actually give you anything new to DO besides running around them and looking. That same time and manpower could have been spent adding actual playable content to this game, but it wasnt. So no, I dont think that was Atari and a manpower issue, that was a mismanagement of priorities.

You need to be patient, they just got rid of the problem and it will take time to get everything situated and rolling again, plus hey are hiring.

The problem is the Foundry was turned off for most of the time S4 was being tested on Tribble, therefore these bugs didnt get worked out like they should have. So no, they didnt "get rid of the problem". That issue is completely unrelated to Atari/PW.

Not wanting to argue, because indeed the Negus is wise, but you have to build the foundation before you build the house.
Both Starfleet Academy and First City are going to be major hubs for upcoming content (and as starting points for the HUGE influx of Free to Play players coming in October more than likely).
It may seem like a lack of content, but it is actually very far sighted.

The house(Star Trek Online) is already built. It has been built since launch, February 2010. What we have recently gotten was a lot of remodeling. Does it look nice? Yes, but the people inside are starving. So again, a mismanagement of priorities, not any manpower issue.

i think their plans have been thrown into chaos by the atari/pw situation. when they planned this content drought the landscape was very different.
we should have gotten content around july time, or at least now in early august. if that had still been the case we would have content to play now and no one would have cared about the content drought as we would all be busy playing it and enjoying the new ground combat, new doff system etc.
the problems with PW and atari started to happen around april/may time (roughly) which seems to have been one of the problems, causing all this content due in july/august to go back to september/october making a small content drought into a huge content drought.
in hindsight if they could go back to January this year then yes they probably should have spent that time making more missions instead of the ground combat and what ever else but at the time they probably did not know they were going to be bought out. hindsight is a wonderful thing.
i dont personally think its mismanagement. i still agree with what they had originally planned out and the time tables they gave us, although thats a personal opinion for each of us to decide.
i think it was very bad timing that made a tricky and controversial issue far worse and made it look like mismanagment. i wont blame atari for wanting to sell a company but i dont think the devs are to blame either.

The reality is, the Devs knew about the sale long before we did. They knew it was coming long before the public announcement was made. So with that foreknowledge they could have changed their internal plans to focus on mission content. This wasnt some big surprise they had no idea about.

Hehe, but that was the Atari paid subscription house. With PW we are going to a Free to Play house. I think that they have their priorities exactly were they want them, not mismanaged at all. New playable content (missions, Featured Episodes, etc) will just be an added inticement for all the new F2P players when the conversion is announced.
Do I like it? Not really. But I can see why as a business they have to do it this way (especially since PW is very prominent in the F2P market).
Does this really solve the whole Foundry thing being down? No. But, again, at least we do have this terrific tool available to us (most of the time ), something the poor slobs over at DDO had to suffer through without.

That doesnt really make sense. When people start a game they want to know it ALREADY has lots of things for them to do, not that it will HOPEFULLY have lots of things for them to do later. So getting those things ALREADY put in game BEFORE the announcement would be much more of an "inticement" than putting them off.

New F2P player just after PW announces it: "Hey I just signed up for STO - man is this game fun!"
Friend of F2P player, "Really should I give it a try?"
New F2P player, "TRIBBLE yes! Heck they even announced a new update in two weeks with all sorts of extra content. Man this game rocks! With new stuff coming out like this all the time, I'll never get bored! Now where's that C-store button?...."

1 month later, after the new player has already hit level cap and run out of things to do: well...that was...short.
I mean seriously, you can post all the pro Cryptic propaganda you want, but at the end of the day there is no excuse for this nonsense. Its been far too long since new mission content was added, and they should test their updates better before putting them live. Thats really all there is to it.
Captain.Hunter, how are you quite sure that STO will be going free to play in October? Have there been comments or confirmations from the Devs or is this simply speculation because of PW acquiring Cryptic?

Just looking at all the same info everyone else is. Dan has said that there will be new stuff in October, Wishy has even said there are big things in the works that they can't talk about. This, coupled with what happened over at Turbine with roughly the same timeframe and circumstances and the fact that Perfect World is a major player in the F2P market, just seems to scream, "STO is going Free to Play in October".
The reality is, the Devs knew about the sale long before we did. They knew it was coming long before the public announcement was made.
if that's the reality, do you have some evidence to show how long the devs knew it was coming for? if you know for sure id love to read it. id like to know exactly how long the devs knew about the take over before it was announced.
i suspect they knew before us, as they are closer to it than we are but how 'long' are we talking about here? a couple of days, a week, a month, two? how long does it take for some nameless suit in atari to decide to sell them? one board meeting? two? do cryptic get a say in the process or was the news as big a shock to them as it was to us? did craig or jack tell the devs a day or two before the announcement, or has this been in the work for months so that everybody and their pet targ knew about it?
did they know how long it would take to find a buyer, did they know when the deal would come through, did they know the impact it would have on development? did atari say just carry on as usual, or did they slash their funding right down.
i suspect there are dozens of issues that we will never know about that took place in the process. maybe if they could explain it all we would understand, maybe if we worked at cryptic we would make the same calls they made, or maybe they dropped the ball completely. we will probably never know for sure.
i suspect the reality is that we dont know what happened and can only speculate, unless you can prove otherwise.
Bleh. The foundry was my only reason to log in, to make cool maps and then figure out a story to put on them. Now I have absolutely no reason to log into Star Trek Online. Literally, none.
I dont, and here is why: if nothing at all had been done in the past 6 months, then it might make a little sense to say it was Atari's fault. However, things have been done. Alot of things. They haven't released the tutortials associated with the new zones yet. They could have kept SFA locked up on some test shard at the back of there office, but why, the cosmetics were done, and once they finish the missions they will be released as well.
To be perfectly honest, what bothers me is that this game would not have surived as long as it has without the true trekkies applying vital financial life support to it.
This game has survived because of startrek fans and for me it's almost insulting to see something as beloved as startrek being so buggy.
Guys lets be honest here new content should not be that hard.. I could easily create a new featured mission evey week by msyelf.
Who is making content? Why dont we see tons of new missions added all the time.. We should log on and see in our available log that starfleet has orders for us to investigate soemthing or other on a fairly regular basis.
It seems to me like they spend way to much time making TRIBBLE for the c store so they can make more money and they dont have a team accually just adding missions..
While I think the Enterprise F looks cool I would much preffer to have something I can do with my heavy escort that has been patrolling the same dang systems for days thinking... Isnt there SOMETHING happening ... SOMEWHERE!
I need more emersion in the game I want to be able to have "trek" missions... I'm sick of blowing up raiders and policing systems... I'm a startrek officer not some beat cop!! we have ships for that and our valuable long range cruisers and such shouldnt be wasting their time policing vulcan space when there is a war going on !!
Regardless I honestly think if they put even 2 guys on making new missions every week just 2 guys!!! and added them during maintanance I would be happier than I am now repeating the same ones over and over.

so you could create 3 or 4 maps from scratch (and i dont mean use existing elements like the foundry, actually design them from nothing), write the story, get it approved by CBS, check the spelling, set up the encounters, create the cut scenes, add the voice over and any unique music, code it into the game, create the rewards, add them, set up all the beacons and waypoints, test for bugs, fix the bugs and any other aspects of it?
and yet considering you think its that easy to do, you think the minor task of adding a couple of uniforms or a ship every month is a time consuming process that is taking up all their time.
if it was that easy that some random person off the internet could make FE every week they would do it wouldn't they? they would crank out 4 or 5 episodes a week of that is all it took. if they are paying these guys to work each week, you would want them to crank out as much stuff as possible. the fact they are not clearly means they cant do it as quickly as you think.
hell if it was that easy to do they would have even more stuff in the store if they could get away with making that much content quickly.
I'm a startrek officer not some beat cop!! we have ships for that and our valuable long range cruisers and such shouldnt be wasting their time policing vulcan space when there is a war going on !!

In Times of war Raiders may pursuit a more aggressive Stand against the Federation so it is only viable that not only the old Police Frigates, that are still Starfleet as YOU, are trying to hold them back but that sometimes a "bigger" ship is needed to show that the Federation isn't blinded by the current War...
And of course it is your Duty as a Starfleet Officer...

Really? All by yourself? So, you can write the story, get CBS to approve it, create the new enviroment artwork, characters, animations, do the cutscenes, and produce cast and direct the voice overs in a week - and playtest it to make sure it works? Forget Cryptic, you should form you own MMO development studio.
If STO does go F2P, hell I want a refund for the almost 1 1/2 years subcriptions I've been paying. As for the state of the Foundry, I would prefer they take it offline, pimp it and not just fix the bugs.
Comments
But I seriously hope it isn't down for long.
Or if it is, it sure would be nice if it got a big list of new assets when it came back up, at least, like more recent costume and map additions.
*Sends cookies, as well as Hot chocolate*
i hope they can fix this quickly, and we can see an end to the show stopping bugs in the foundry. this cant continue.
Sorry for being naughty! I won't try that again.
