It seems everything is running ridiculously slow, load times between instances can take 1 minute, my ship will start to move, then jerk back and forth all over the place. When going to pick up an item, it takes 5 seconds or so just to see the item description.. I have an ADSL2+ connection capable of 800kb/s, and play both Wow and EVE online with a latency of around 80ms. I also get disconnected after about 20 minutes of play, so this game is now suddenly unplayable.. I have already changed proxy patch setting to every possible option and not they are back to normal.. Here is my Ping results - From Brisbane Australia
I have spent half the day looking at forums and it's no secret that this seems to be a large scal issue with alot of users. I remember when STO was first launched and the lag was ridiculous, so i thought to myself "That's cool it's a new MMO, come back in a year or so and they will have pulled it together by then".
Now that I've jumped back in I can honestly say the content is remarkably better, the gameplay has definitely improved, however I'm wondering, does Cryptic intend to do anything about this?, or is the the standard we should come to accept for hour monthly paid subscription? I'm not ranting, just saying if there is no solution, I'll just cut my losses and spend my cash on a fully function game... Any help would be greatly appreciated guys, thanks :-)

From our site of the cable there is just one thing we can do, to point out that STO is not working properly since the Season 4 patch and cancel the subscription until the problem is solved.
If there is a problem with your ISP, you can contact them to let them know. You can go through the standard troubleshooting of disabling firewalls, bypassing your router, disabling antivirus, ect. I dont think this problem is as wide spread as some believe, and I dont think Cryptic can do much if its not on their end.
Seems like most of the people who have posted about horrible lag and such are overseas, too. A lot of people in the UK were having this problem, and now it seems Australian players are having it. Quite a few hops between where your packets start and end. All it takes is one crappy relay bewteen you and the destination for you to have lag issues.

Look at hop #3. That's where the ping packet loss begins, it the local ISP level. Almost every hop after that has one lost ping packet. You should give them a call and ask them why you're loosing data packets.
I also spend 3 days this week with my ISP, tuning my connection to check for problems as I was describing the problem to them. I even doubled my bandwidth and got a new modem. Same problem.
To the OP: considered the finite amount of undersea cabling between AU and the US, it might be a non-trivial issue. I know some other games have servers that are more local to you, and therefore you might not see the issue as readily as you do when playing STO.
Did you show your ISP the same traceroute you posted here? Because according to the posted traceroute, the problem is clearly theirs.
I also spend 3 days this week with my ISP, tuning my connection to check for problems as I was describing the problem to them. I even doubled my bandwidth and got a new modem. Same problem.
Doubling bandwidth won't solve a problem with intermittent bandwidth; it will just means you have more bandwidth that will be stuttering because of one of their routes or routers. And if it's a problem with their router, a new modem certainly wouldn't fix the issue.
What sort of routing protocols are they using? OSPF? RIP? Any QoS to ensure integrity of real-time traffic leaving their network? Any DiffServ? All valid questions, none of which are dependent in any way, shape, or form in increasing your bandwidth... at least not in regards to the trivial amount of bandwidth needed for client-server sync.
Edit: you're right in inspecting your own connection and equipment first, but if you truly feel that it's not you or your local ISP, read this thread and use the Net Test tool. Send the results to Cryptic in a Support Ticket, and see what they suggest.

No, the game runs like a hot knife through butter for me. I was posting that so that people have an ideal connection to compare to. Those numbers can be a bit like a foreign language to many.
A while back I posted about lag and rubber banding. I got no comment on my Tracert and Nettest. Here it is again (from about 20 days ago):

I'm currently seeing * in my Tracert on the first couple hops - is there a problem with my ISP close to my house? My router seems to have died but my internet works if I bypass it - is that related?
Nettest shows around 200 KB/sec 20 days ago and currently. What does this mean and what can anyone do to improve it? I had no lag problems prior to Season 4 but no one seems to believe that.
I noticed the OP and myself both have "atlas.cogentco.com" in our TraceRT. Do you see a problem there?
Getting frustrated so thanks for any help / suggestions / info / etc.
Im not sure if the atlas.cogentco.com is an issue as there doesnt seem to be a lost connection or high ping.
iJayla looks like you have some major issue on Port: 7499: 74 KB/sec 4 KB/sec 79 KB/sec.
Mirror-Master you have issue right at the start of your tracert. You shold try connecting without your router at all. just straight from modem to computer.
Mirror-Master you have issue right at the start of your tracert. You shold try connecting without your router at all. just straight from modem to computer.
That's how I am currently connected - without the router.
My previous TraceRT from 20 days ago was WITH the Router and there was no timeout at the start of the trace nor any asterisks in the trace.
Well it could be something in the nettest as those are below average numbers but this is getting beyond my knowledge sorry.
EDIT: Do you run a firewall? maybe that could be blocking those early routes??
Stevie - I performed my nettest a few weeks ago. What if the numbers in each of the columns are higher then what your showing? Is that good or bad? I'll rerun them all tomorrow and post them on here.

Yes, I run a firewall. Thing is, I've always ran it - before I had lag problems and 20 days ago when my router was connected and there was no asterisks in my trace route.
I'm reluctant to disable my firewall program while I don't have a router connected. I got a high security alert earlier from a pc in China trying to connect to my IP address.
In any case, I don't believe my Tracert or Nettest showed a clear indicator to my lag problems after Season 4 went live.
At ESD, I have a laggy response from the UI - sometimes waiting for 30 or more seconds before a window pops up. Tried to move around when that happened one time and I rubber banded while I saw others moving around freely.
I'd just like to Apologise to the staff at Cryptic and other forum users for my Angry rant yesterday, I was just a little at the end of my tether. I thought about it today at work and realized there is still a number of things I can try to help this before calling it quits.. So once again, sorry to everyone for making an *** of myself. Tonight I will look into WiFi tweaking within my house, and also checking port forward settings again.. Wish me luck
ps- When trying to submit a ticket on the site, it says "must supply a language, so you choose english; then it clears the page and the process keeps happening over and over, any suggestions?
The first hop there is your own comp. if for any reason you get a time out, your security setup is tight or you have something stealing your bandwidth (spyware, malware, other programs etc)
Second hop is your ISP, third is their gateway to the main backbone.
Altas is not the issue, that is just the backbone system you are travelling on to get to the destination. The last 2-3 hops is the Cryptic system.
Just a little Clarification from an old field tech so you all understand the servers.
Understand also that season 4 due to the voice system makes different calls on your netstack, and because of that, your personal computer security responds differently to it. I had an issue until I did 2 things. Since my fleet uses Vent exclusively, I shut down the Vivox in game and I relax my firewall a touch on the STO game. Since I did that, my lag went away. Sometimes the system trying to handle 2 voice command programs at once causes some backlogging on your systems, so decide if you want it active or if you dont, if you use another voice over program.

Couple questions:
Getting frustrated so thanks for any help / suggestions / info / etc.
That makes 3 of us with lag who have "atlas.cogentco.com" in the Route.
iJayla looks like you have some major issue on Port: 7499: 74 KB/sec 4 KB/sec 79 KB/sec.
Mirror-Master you have issue right at the start of your tracert. You shold try connecting without your router at all. just straight from modem to computer.
That's how I am currently connected - without the router.
My previous TraceRT from 20 days ago was WITH the Router and there was no timeout at the start of the trace nor any asterisks in the trace.
EDIT: Do you run a firewall? maybe that could be blocking those early routes??
Stevie - I performed my nettest a few weeks ago. What if the numbers in each of the columns are higher then what your showing? Is that good or bad? I'll rerun them all tomorrow and post them on here.
Good results:
Column 1: ~300-500 KB/sec
Column 2: ~20kb/sec
Column 3: ~300- 500kb/sec
For me column 1 had an average around 800, column 2 was 40 and column 3 was 1000 average.
Beats me. I'm about ready to give up.
ps- When trying to submit a ticket on the site, it says "must supply a language, so you choose english; then it clears the page and the process keeps happening over and over, any suggestions?
Hope that helps folks
you have to login with your account at the top of the page for the full submit ticket options to show up in the drop down boxes.
