Bootcamp iMac Temperature

Hello, I use a new iMac (2011) under Boot Camp. The iMac is 3 weeks old. Now the motherboard is defective and the power supply. The error occurred after I've played under Windows STO about 3 hours. Can it be that my computer is overheating by STO? This is not a criticism of STO, I love this game. The iMac has been repaired, but now I'm a little scared to play again. If anyone has experience in this direction, I would be grateful for any help. IMac config: 2.7 Quad Core AMD 6770m Thank you

It's not the game. You're computer needs better cooling. Playing the game just exaserbates the built in design problem with the ventilation of the iMac.

What did the Geniuses say was wrong with it? And you might have a little better luck in a Mac games forum. I don't think we have many Mac users here. Oh and what resolution are you running?

This is not a software issue, as he is running Windows on his Mac while playing STO.

It could be your computer did let itself overheat, Bootcamp has poor drivers for fans and battery-life conservation especially though it is odd it would let itself become so hot as to damage itself.
This also sounds like a rare occurrence chalked up to bad luck from a combination of factors. iMacs have very good cooling design-wise, despite what others in this thread may say and the 6770 is definitely enough to play this game quite well.
I have run STO under Wine in the native OSX environment and in a... Windows... environment extensively and my computer has never overheated or had an issue, you should not be afraid to run STO as this does sound like a truly bizarre occurrence.
If a Macbook Air can run Crysis safety, then under normal conditions, your iMac can run STO easily. Enjoy the game.

I have been running STO on my Macbook Pro and Mac Mini since Open Beta, so do not worry and yes, a Mac Mini can play this game ;)

Hi, thanks for your answers. Technically, the motherboard was defective and the temperature sensor on the hard disk. The new iMac has a good cooling and should generally not overheat. The heat is dissipated through the aluminum casing. And even if the hardware would switch off at too high temperatures. And also, an iMac should be suitable for playing, is also only standard hardware installed. What makes me nervous is that the error first appeared in Windows. Then I read the article about the overheating problems here in the forum. I will continue to play and limit the frame rate to 30 FPS and watch the temperatures. Many thanks

As I do not have a Mac, I would not know about how well the average iMac cools. :p That being said, it could always be a fan...
