I've been playing with a single 9800 GT for about 8 months or so. A few weeks back I got a second card to run SLI. As soon as I logged in it crashed out. Without SLI I could run, but lower graphics then other games.
It turned out my older 9800 died within hours of that.
So now the cards back, and SLI works fine. I can play FE in high settings with 40-55fps in SLI, in high pop zones.
But STO still drops to a flickering half screen in SLI as soon as you get the update and log in.
Drop SLI, I'm in.
Does this mean the only way to actually SEE the graphics capability of this game is to buy a $300 card? Is there a way to make SLI work in STO?
One guy said something about changing some code before the card failed. Anyone know about that??
this game has been confirmed to play HAVOK on the shadders in nvidia.
When you sli u effectively split your shadder process on the two cards.
Its the shadders that are causing hell in the game, because crytpic doesnt know how to program a game well so it uses scaled video cards properly.
And i have a simular problem.
I am running 3 x 580GTX in SLI.
Its funny when you see crysis 2 on stereoscopic 3d enabled running better then this game.
But i cant seem to maintain a frame rate higher then 72 fps in GAME on 3 580GTX.
And when someone pops a power in ESD and im viewing them, its halarious watching my FPS dip to 42fps.
In short.. wait til cryptic fixes DX11 as it should run better on our video card with its present shadders.
I tried running no shadows or shaders last time. I'll give it a shot now as I ran on one card for a week waiting on the other to be fixed, and turned it on again.
ALSO, isn't there supposed to be a way to set up SLI to render each other frame. Like leapfrog?? This is my first SLI, and I'd swear I'd seen that in one of the forum posts about SLI somewhere.
With it in high settings, but Shadows and shaders turned off. I SEE everything and CAN log in. However I get these recurring green squiggles all over the screen. They seem up/down, then left to right, then gone, then it all starts over.

So, anyone have a clue on that one?
artifacts... usually means failing hardware, bad hardware, or improperly drivered hardware. OR your monitor cable is not securely connected.
Try reinstalling your drivers... if you notice ur seeing them only in this game.
One more note... disable Vsync if your on SLI.
VSync forces < then 60fps, which could also mess things up.
Disabling Vsync will cause your card to run hotter, but you may get smoother playback because ur card is not forced stay below 60fps.
In the Nvidia control panel, make sure that the profile for STO (if there isn't one, you'll need to make one) is set for Single Display mode and "Force Alternate Frame 2". The game flickers horribly on alternate frame 1, but fine on Alternate 2.

Is there any other settings to enable/disable? DId you just load off the Crysis file and edit those 2 options?
I'm not sure why Nvidia doesn't have a default profile for it yet

I made my own profile.
I forced ARF2, single display mode*, forced it to use V-sync (if your monitor is 60 Mhz, you'll get up to 60 fps which is completely acceptable and butter smooth). I also set the profile to use maximum performance mode. I don't think I reset much else, but when I'm able to check, I'll add an edit.
EDIT 1: * Actually, I set Single display mode as my default global, as I only have one monitor. If you only use one monitor, there's no reason to have Multiple Display Mode selected at all, which for some reason is nVidia's default. If you do have multiple monitors, obviously you wouldn't want to select single display mode.

I tried this. Now it says SLi in the top left corner during loading. However I still get these recurring green squiggly lines. Up/Down,.. left/right,.. AMAZING GRAPHICS,.. Up/Down,.. Left/right,...
I tried a number of forced settings without success. Including LOWEST SETTINGS.
I'm sure my Graphics cards and Ram are all fine. I JUST bought both of these cards from a reputable re-man house (off lease). They both look brand new and run ALL OTHER games in as high a setting as these cards were set to run them. In Fallen Earth I'm running High settings with Shadows, No V-sync (messes with frame rates BAD in that game). Even running AA in 4X. I get 60-105fps (lower end in high pop areas, High end in lower pop areas.) The glare from sunset looks so real I want to squint!
Other then SWG (which is pretty low graphics) I don't play any other MMO's. I'll log into a F2P tonight like Lotro and see what happens.
However Being freshly installed, with all the newest drivers, PLUS my old 9800gt dying the day the new one showed up, then buying another one to replace it. Means BOTH cards have been installed, and re-seated. Making a contact loss pretty unlikely.
I DID re-seat both ends of my Monitor cable, although it made no difference since THIS is the only game (or software) giving me any issues.
I thank you guys/gals for all your help though. Sure wish I could get it to work. My single card just barely cut it in this game, and would crash from overheating in high pop areas or instances. Which is why I bought a second card! So this game would be more stable for me. I'll keep trying, but the fight for graphics in this game is getting old.;)
Does anyone know if these issues are also related to the extreme frame drop when the anyone starts using a stealth power? My graphics (2x nv gtx460 sli) run fine, but when the Jem'hadar cloak or especially when those reman captains do their purple split-personality power, my frame rate dumps in the garbage.

Oh, the Jem'Hadar ground cloak makes my FPS drop tremendously too on my nVidia setup. I didn't notice it on a gaming laptop that had an ATI Radeon card.

Get use to it. Being an nvidia owner with dual sli 470 ive had this since day one. Its an issue with cryptics team lacking the ability to code properly for nvidia shaders. Only person to acknolwedge an issue is cryptic dave. No one else from crpytic has ever acknowledged the problem which is just ignorance on cryptics part especially their ability to fail at fixing this. This is just one example you will find many more where your fps plummets for no reason . A fleet mate of mine runs tri sli 580's and even his setup struggles in places and STO now eats fps worse than the original crysis. Seriously how can a company program an engine so badly ? SLI ISNT NEW !!! im trying to be pateint buw how long do I have to wait ?
Well, No change still today. Can't even log in, in SLi. Just squiggly lines alternating with great graphics.
THIS THREAD IS NOT ABOUT FRAME RATES!!
It IS about not being able to play in SLi at all!
Thank you for keeping this thread on topic. I've paid GOBS of cash to play this game (enough to buy many higher end graphics cards). The least I can get is my own thread on NOT getting to play! Instead of it turning into a frame rate thread.

The point was forget about being an nvidia owner and getting decent framerates/sli performance on nvidia cards. This game should be labelled plays best on ATI because we dont know how to program for nvidia. Sorry crypticdave i know your trying to fix it but how long must nvidia owners wait for decent performance from the game ?
I still can't play this game without disabling SLi. After giving this company around $500, I think supporting the "BEST" graphics systems. (Nvidia SLi, lol) Which cost me an additional $200 with the Motherboard.
That's $700 Spent to get good graphics in this game.
If they WILL NOT, and DO NOT support Nvidia. Then I will keep this post TDC!:D

Try adding an SLI profile for 'gameclient.exe' as well as 'startrekonline.exe' (and as other have said - make sure you force an SLI mode. I ran STO in SLI up to about three months post launch fine (I had two 7950GTs) - but after one died; I just said TRIBBLE it and got a GTX260. (Personally, I find SLI a waste and will never do it with two seperate physical cards again as the actual boost isn't woryth the extra cost of a second physical card; and all the things that alone ads in that you need a higher capacity PSU - extra cooling, etc.)
Again, I wish I knew more about your sustem as I was able to get (and verify) STO to run fine on NVidia SLI from October 2009(start of closed beta for me) - May 2010 until one of my cards died.
This is why I will NEVER go SLI or Crossfire, to much of a headache to get working, heck, sometimes I have troubles getting one card to work with a game. xD
Just click on the tool icon next to driver version and on the top scroll down to "Star Trek: Online" and there you can choose all sorts of SLI profiles, plus other goodies. Just don't overdo it on the extra settings. (thank god it has a load default button)

I put a lot of money in this game BECAUSE I was told the graphics are FAB. I do not disagree, but running on low settings AINT so FAB!
While running at higher setting makes me crash out from overheating the single card.
THIS is not an issue in other games, BECAUSE I can run SLI.
Why can"t I in STO??

NO this has NOTHING to do with frame rates during game play! THIS thread is about NOT being able to play with SLi running AT ALL!
NVIDIA Control Panel 3.5.752.0
Driver Version 8.17.12.6721 Date: 2/18/2011
The newest CP is 3.7.730.01, So, your running the old Control panel. The update was about 6-8 weeks ago.

I have been an Nvidia guy since my Gainward gforce4 TI 4800 card. Never bought ATI before.
Don't plan to.
I'm runniing Dual GTX580's and I read somewhere that if you try connecting your monitor to the 2nd card, the problem might resolve itself.
I had some flickering problems when I connected my monitor to the first card but everything was fine when I connected it to the second card.
Just a black screen with the monitor plugged into the bottom card.
I noticed yesterday in my menus somewhere, that although both of my cards are 9800gt from XFX, they have different software versions on each card.
So, I'm going to try switching which card is top and bottom. We'll see if one likes that more.

Nvidia Inspector is a nice little addon utility that may or may not help get SLI going for you.
