I don't know about anyone else... but I have noticed what I first think is lag from time to... then I realized my Video Card was getting up to 100 degrees. At that temp it throttles itself and gfx of course are laggy.
I have many much more gfx demanding games that never push my card over 60-70 degrees max... if I have everything maxed out.
Cryptic is something in the Season 4 patch causing the massive GFX heat up? Quote honestly I am not going to burn my card out over a game.
GPU's can take more heat then CPU's mainly, therefore im not surprised that the card still runs stable without artifacts at around 100C
I believe GPU's can run even hotter then 100C (for the ones without automatic throttling) but going anywhere above 120> will certainly fry it soon enough
Its weird tho because none of my GPU's (both ATI and Nvidia) do not get hotter since the S4 patch. (While my settings are higher then they should (And enabled most of the fancy effects) with a reasonably low framerate of 20FPS.
Even my Macbook pro's Nvidia 330M GT (Even overclocked O.o) which is a real hothead doesnt go anywhere above 80C
I also couldnt see why the card would only run at close to 100 with STO and not with any other game. Its not like a game can use more of a cards functionalities/moving transistors then it physically has unless some code was really borked)
But if STO somehow utilized the GPU in a harsh way and which would be the reason for the high temperature, this should most certainly also be true with some enhanced GPU stress test tool (Which also tries to squeeze every possible bit out of the GPU. Note that there is always a limit to what you can squeeze out of a chip, and that is what a stress test tool is for) and if that is the case, something might be wrong with your cooling?
Just some mild guesses, have you tried touching your heatsink? I mean is it hot or ... Like my Desktop GPU i can put my fingers on the relatively small heatsink and i can keep them on for like 10-15 secs before I go and say 'ouch' and that thing warms up to like 70~ degrees with STO)
If its not that hot or hot, its either the heatsink which isnt properly seated or perhaps old/not enough cooling paste. Or the Thermal Diode is just out of whack somehow
What tool are you using actually to measure your GPU core temp? Have you tried using GPU-Z?
wow 100C? really? My nVidia GTS450 runs around 38-40 c with nothing turned down, processor runs at a steady 44c when in pvp with 2 full teams...a little less when just doin pve stuff. I could be wrong, but I would guess you have some cooling trouble. Of course, counting processor and graphics card I've got a total of 8 fans in this thing, but still, 100c is a bit high I think.

lol depends on your card and its thermal ratings... Many higher end cards run 80+ depending on the die size and process that was used in its manufacture. I run a 5770 in this rig its a bit older now but not much its a 40nm card and 70-80 degrees is pretty much a standard load temp for a 40nm 1 bil transistor card.
The GTS450 is a cool running card it is also a 40nm card... however its a neutered version and runs 16 rops instead of the 32 the core is designed to have. Half the core logic is disabled... so it runs nice and cool as a result. Something like the 560 or even 460 would have thermals closer to the 70 degree point as a normal envelope. Still interesting to note, not sure if this is an ATI in STO issue again. The issues with dynamic lighting and ATI cards seemed to have been fixed. (I assume through an inadvertent ati driver update) To avoid extreme heat I had to shut that off again... so who knows.
My 5770 works as it should... it runs 30-40 degrees idle, 60-80 degrees under load. However it for some reason pushes the high 90s and will break 100 at times in STO alone. Its odd, and I honestly don't know why.
I don't think i can blame rubberbanding on my video card. ^_^;
You can if your video card throttles itself... what temps are you running when you lag? Honestly I'm curious. I have noticed no lag since dropping all my gfx to keep the temps in the low 90s. lol

It is odd even running purpose built strees tests... I don't push 100 degrees. It really is just STO.
