Coming back after a couple weeks away I was looking forward to trying out the new controls and updates. After letting the patcher run overnight I logged in and started to run an exploration. After waiting through five minutes of patching per sector change, I got to the nebula and started into an unknown system. After twenty three minutes I was immediatly logged out for being idle upon warping in.
Logging back in, I attempted to explore a second unknown system. This time the patch time was less than ten minutes so I was able to proceed to beam down to the planet. And another twenty minute patch.
Frustrated by this experience, I decided to try re-running the Coliseum on my newly promoted Commander alt to get a new shield, figuring I can wait out the patching for one mission since it won't vanish on me even if I get logged out again. After spending twelve minutes entering the system, I managed to get the station shut down and beam down to the surface in reasonably short order. Then I spent three quarters of an hour in the sewer pipe between the arena and the Marooned portion.
TL;DR Please make patch on demand something that can be turned on rather than having to be turned off. Failing that, please post straightforward instructions for turning it off so that people like myself don't end up spending two days searching for the tiny hyperlink mixed in with the things that get ignored because they're more easily accessed from the website.
That's how I fixed it but it took awhile to find. Like I said, that entire line of links aside from the options in small type duplicates functions that are more easily accessed by simply clicking the bookmark for the STO home page. It's very easy to overlook, which is the entire point here.
If this was getting me frustrated, I can only imagine how someone with less patience or ability to follow the tech support flowchart would feel.
While I don't like to admit it. I didn't know that is how you turned off the on demand patching either. I know it makes sense I just never use any of those links and I forgot they exist. I just assumed it was in the in game options and I just kept forgetting to turn it off while I was playing.
Thanks for the post OP and reminding me that I wanted to turn it off.
I think patch on demand should remain on by default. I don't notice any lag with it and patching is seemless. It's a much better customer experience.
This was only bothering me because almost two weeks out from season 4 I'm still patching with every other load screen. Once I turned on demand patching off I still had something like 2 and a half gigs to patch and it took a little over a half an hour an now it's done with. I prefer that.
I'm just glad it's an option. I know there are plenty of people who don't have the greatest connection and this is the first major patch where no one has complained that it will take them a week to download it.
I like this option, however for those that dont have the best internet connection in the world like myself being way up here in Yukon, keep getting d/ced when doing the P.O.D but for those that have fast net, I think its a great thing
I also have to turnoff the patch-on-demand, i do indeed have a decent enough net connection - put the POD likes to take just under/over 1meg/sec bandwith, which always TRIBBLE my ping
... it really never occurred to you to hit the options link on the launcher?
I knew it existed from when testing on tribble but I didn't actually know where the option was either. Thanks for the heads up, I've gotten used to filtering out all the info on the launcher because of all the Cstore ads and just click the launch button as soon as I see it.
Nope, it shouldn't be disabled by default. That would defeat the purpose.
There are enough newcomers getting into STO that complain that after installing they first have to download a huge patch before they can get into the game. That is certainly a big annoyance factor for getting into STO, and the patch on demand feature removes it.
In addition, it probably also exists to improve the traffic created by players getting into the game after a big patch.

Disagree. Partly.
Make sure everyone knows it's there, make us make a choice on the next patch up so we can make an educated decision based upon our internet connection speed.
i disabled it when i realized i was i was behind 3 gigs worth of patching. I have awesome interweb service too i was surprised it had not caught up on its own

Ah, I found it now..............thanks for the heads up.
Would of been nice if Cryptic, oh I don't know............has instructions on this.

I don't think anyone would like the game telling you, "Sorry...map cannot be loaded"
There is no lag on my part either.
Agreed. Sometimes this game really cuts one too many corners in terms of support/assistance/help.
Good call. ~Bluegeek
