I would like to start using the new Vivox voice chat feature, but before I shell out any money for a mic or headset, I was just wondering how it would work exactly.
Currently, my system is connected to my 5.1 home theater speaker system, so I am wondering, if I connect a headset for voice chat, wouldnt that defeat the purpose of having the speaker system?
Would the voice chat be routed to the speakers and I just need a seperate mic? But that seems that it would make it hard to communicate like that with all the background noise.
Or perhaps if I get a USB headset, the voice chat can be routed to the headset?
I am just wondering how this would all work before I buy the headsets.

I don't think you need to plug the headphones in, you can just plug the Mic in, it's only a problem if you have internet radio stations on as well, you'll have to have those turned down a little to be able to hear the chat
Indeed if you dont want the voice playback(from other players) coming through your speaker system the USB headset is an easy option.
if you dont mind everything playing back through your speaker system a bog standrd cheap old skool headset with just the mic cable connected would do the trick

I have a mic in my laptop, so I didn't need to do a thing; if you havea laptop, I'd just suggest using that for when you want to talk
is voice chat all that usefull anyway , sure i guess it makes things easier for fleets but i dont fancey some weirdo ive never met before cussing in my living room =p
well the in-game voice chat only allows you to hear those people on your team or fleet.
since I am running teamspeak, i just set it up for the people that I regularly team up with.
the voice chat (input/output) is routed to my USB headset instead of my 5.1 surround sound, so the voice chat isnt audible to other people in the room anyway.
and yes, voice chat makes it much easier to communicate with your team members to coordinate instead of having to type everything
I'm with Vivox and we're trying to nail down some of the issues people have been having with STO since our service went live in Season 4. I know you've moved onto Teamspeak, but I was hoping we could still try to see what went wrong between the in-game VoIP and your USB headset.

I know I'm not the OP, but I've been having similar problems with my USB headset and my home pc (Vivox works like a charm on my laptop, its only the desktop that's giving me issues). I pretty much have to unplug my speakers and disable ALL the other sound drivers on my computer aside from the USB headset to get it to work with STO. Has there been any luck in resolving these issues?
(BTW, I had to get the usb set b/c a traditional set did not work AT ALL with the Vivox on the home pc).

My question is does vivox only work with usb head set, cause most people in my fleet cant even use vivox, and after a while it disapears all togeahter, I have every thing set like it supose to be, and i can see the mic pic showing me keting it but no sound and the other peoplein my fleet are haveing the same problem any ideas would be great

I've only met a handful of people who've gotten your Vivox to work. Me, I've had absolutely no luck whatsoever. Can't hear anyone, they can't hear me. I use a Logitech USB headset.

This.
You can select an output device independent of the game's general output device in the voice chat options menu.
So make sure you buy a USB headset so you can route voice chat through the headset and game sound through your 5.1.
This is exactly how I have STO setup currently.
I figured the setup would have to be a USB headset to work correctly.

The game's voice support would not play nice with the USB headset, so I just gave up on it.
Using Teamspeak now and it works great.
