Game crashing at launch

Ever since the patch yesterday I've been unable to launch STO. The game won't get past the Cryptic loading screen before crashing to desktop. It won't even get that far into loading STO before crashing, two or three seconds at most and then I get a face full of desktop. I've also been having issues with the patcher. Unless I have on-demand patching disabled, it keeps giving me the error message "Error 31: A hog returned an error while trying to read" and it won't patch.

I only have these problems when trying to access Holodeck. Patching Tribble works just fine with on-demand patching enabled, and it launches without any problems even if on-demand patching is disabled.

I'm not sure what to do here, short of uninstalling and reinstalling the game. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Since patch I have been unable to log on. It's been a day now & all I get when I try to play is a Fatel Error message. This isn't FUN anymore.

I had the same error, it was xfire for me, so close down xfire and it work.

I would if I could, but I don't have xfire installed on my computer.

you can delete the hogg file mentioned in the error messor (or it may be listed in the error, crash log files)
and have the launcher download a new one.
some antiviru programs corrupt hogg files download like panda 2011 . other sometime will lock a file when it does a scan so excluding the game directory from scanning helps . (and doing a reboot haver the change to free the file)

The error message doesn't say which specific hogg is responsible for the error. Is there a log or something that would tell me which file is the problematic one?

I freeze on the character selection screen. I tried going on safe mode, get in game an tried everything nothing works. Even switched vid card just to double check.

Game ran perfect until now which is insulting to say the least.

Deleting all of the hogg files seems to have solved both the Error 31 issue and the crash at launch issue. Everything was running very smoothly this evening.
