Game Crashes after Loading Character + Crashes Internet

SystemSystem Member, NoReporting Posts: 178,019 Arc User
Okay, long story short upon launching STO and loading my character, the character will show up in it's last known position as it should. However, I immediately get a server disconnect and on top of it, my internet goes down. The only time I've had this happen before the Season 4 update was on the Tribble server. I've run the troubleshooter for my internet connection after each time, it either can't determine that there is a problem or it says that it lost contact with the DNS server. Anyone have a clue what is up and/or knows how to fix it? Any help would be appreciated.

I'm having the same problem myself sort of. Right after this new update one of my characters wont load. The maps load bar gets to 40% then the game crashes. I can play on my Klingon character but not my Federation character.

I'm having similar problems, sometimes characters load, sometimes they do not.

If they do load, after about 20 seconds, the keyboard inputs stop being accepted, then the client crashes.

I've run a full verify and the problem still persists.

There's a patch set for tomorrow morning, am I going to have to wait until tomorrow night after work to play STO?

UPDATE: If you're running XFire while playing, try shutting it down or disabling it in-game for STO. My issues have vanished since disabling XFire in-game, check out more on this thread: STO/XFire

Crypic is lucky, I play eve online and if this happened there general chat would be flooded with threads of "no confidence" "Fix the game" and demanding a reply from the staff. All in all people are being very patient.

I have tried to launch the game in safe mode, and forced verify the files and in all my attempts to fix it I have been met with failure. Oh well...~boots up world of tanks~

It's not Xfire for me at least. I'd never even heard of Xfire before today, let alone download, install or use it.

Are you playing through Steam, or using some other program that uses an overlay of some sort in game..

xfire and Steam was causing a crash for me.. untill I disabled both (Steam and xfire) in game..

The game runs fine for me now after disabling any 3rd party use in game.. STO is having trouble with in game overlays since S4

I was having this exact issue. Turning Xfire off fixed it immediately.

Supposedly the Steam in-game overlay can also cause this.

No Xfire running on this pc.. Disabled the steam overlay.. I transfer 1 time to another map crash to log in.. and internet shuts off for about 5 to 10 secs while the router reboots.. Had this issue on tribble to. I even disabled that new patching thing. Hopeless at this point. If it isnt fixed I'll have to quit. >.<

Don't have XFire, not running via Steam. I'd really rather not quit the game, but it's starting to look like I may have to if this doesn't get fixed

It might be useful to get hardware/software specs from everyone.

The only other thing I can think of would be to do a force verify of the game files from the launcher options and disable the on-demand patcher, which isn't really a good bandaid fix attempt.

I tried this temporary fix on Tribble, and it seems to work for me on Holodeck as well:

Disable the Vivox voice chat ingame. It's a new tab under the "Options" in game; can't remember the exact text atm.

I crashed first time on Holodeck until I could get the setting changed. No more crashes yet - and I will be trying as soon as Holodeck is back up.

And yes, the crash involved my wireless cable modem resetting (wired connection). Was very annoying to my roommates while I tried playing on Tribble over the last weekend.

Be sure to post back with an update if this fix works or not - or whether the patch fixes it instead.

For anyone else having this issue, I logged in and was just able to turn off the voice chat before it reset my internet connection. Now I've signed back in with voice chat disabled, and so far it's not resetting. Now one of the last times I was halfway through a mission before it decided to crash, so I'ma just sit here for a few and see if I get reset again or not, and I'll post an update in a few. The new patch itself, however, did nothing for it.

Well I finally was able to complete a mission, so it looks like disabling voice chat worked for me. Thanks!

    Btw, assimilation is awesome.

I see, I'll try disabling the sound.... though it's hard unless it's in the cfg files... since I can't seem to get into the game period..... in safe mode yes.... but only a few seconds and don't know if settings in safe mode end up affecting normal mode.

@Riaxx: Can you get to the character selection screen? If you can, then hit Back in the lower left to log out and then in the bottom right will be the Options button. Of course it might freeze before you can get that far.

Okay thus far I've found that disabling the ingame voice chat solves the problem. Hope this helps folks.

I am also crashing..... it has taken me about 6 tries to get onto my ship and out of the Qo'Nos sector, but it looks as though I'm ok once out of there.

If you're a klink, try leaving the home sector.... and I also disabled voice chat just in case. :D

P.S.. scratch that... leaving the sector doesn't do anything... just crashed in a nebula..... :(

I've had this problem with my internet crashing since Season 4 arrived on tribble. Disabling On-demand patching & Voice-chat has made no differance at all... I have no issues elsewhere with staying on the net...

After some more testing since my last post, I have discovered that when the game "goes to TRIBBLE", I also lose my internet connection.

Kinda sucks really. It takes a few minutes for my machine to detect my network settings again, and then I'm off and running. Try to log back in, and the same story all over again.

    *Sigh*

I just want my STO back. :(

Any updates on these? The Devs are totally clueless and seem to ignore this issue completely.

I had the same problem.. When I logged on it would disconnect me from the Internet and RESET my cable modem! I went I did two things, first I went into Options on the STO client and disabled Patch on Demand, this will force the game to down load all patches and bug fixes! 2nd when I get into the game and most of the time I only had about 30 seconds I went into Game Options and Turned off Voice Chat! Now its WARP SPEED BABY!
