This used to come up a lot. If I remember correctly, it was tied to running the game at a different resolution than the windows desktop resolution. Try matching the game res and the windows res and see if that fixes your problem.
I have it set to "windowed maximized" (looks like full screen). You can minimize the game with no ill effects. That's how I fixed it when I had the problem.
The same thing happened to me, but I already had the game running at the same resolution as my desktop.
What's worse, now I can't even run the game long enough to change the graphics settings before it hangs. The launcher appears to work fine (I even forced a verify), but once in game there seems to be a fixed countdown to lockup. If I leave it at character select, it still hangs. If I hurry and log into a toon, it still hangs. If I back out to the in-game login screen and try to get to th options menu from there, it still hangs.
Is there anything else I can do or do I just have to wait for the next patch and cross my fingers?
EDIT: One more strange bit - if I get into the Captain's Table, I can still hear the background noise and other players accessing consoles even after my game stops responding.
and here's the Windows crash report (the game itself doesn't seem to know that anything's wrong)

I don't use Xfire but i've got pretty much the same problem, i run windowed maximized, and if i minimize im fine but the second i try to restore, BOOM gameclient.exe crashes, started happening the minute season 4 released on tribble when i played that but holodeck could minimize no problem now that S4 is out i minimize and try and restore? crash...
prior to season four id never had a problem alt-tabbing. I was having the game crash when I alt-tabbed towards the end of the season 4 on tribble. downloading new newest ati drivers seems to have cleared it up.
