This I know is totally not Cryptic's problem this is more a warning to other users. Since patching to season 4 if I have Xfire on the game will crash after the new splash screen. (I have submitted crashlogs each time for what it's worth) Have managed to get to the character select screen, without xfire on, loaded xfire and then instant crash. Could just be my system but initial impressions are dont use Xfire and STO at the same time.
I have had problems with STO since the patch and I also use Xfire. I've just uninstalled STO and installing it on a different hard drive. I'll also disable Xfire. Hopefully this will fix the crashing issue I had.
I've taken the liberty of posting a thread on the Xfire Forums for all of us. I Love Xfire and it really helps my Instant Messaging (I use hotmail and yahoo and hate having to tab out of game ><)
I have the game crash directly after "engage" as well and since I am not using Xfire, it imust be some other problem. My best guess so far is somewhere with directx, video or sound. Strange though that I could play on live and test center before with the same setup and no problem.
I was having this exact issue. Turning Xfire off fixed it immediately. No issues with Holodeck or Tribble, although I was having 0 issues with Tribble anyways since xfire's in-game integration does not activate due to the different executable path.
And just for some technical info:
I was unable to log in with an Alien female, Fed RA lower half 5.
Win7x64 Ultimate, Sapphire ATI Radeon 4870 1GB, 12GB of DDR3 1600, intel core i7 940 (the original LGA1366, not that newer 940) hyperthreading on.
xfire was causing me to crash too... and disabling xfire in game didn't make a diferance untill I also disabled Steam in game too (I play sto through steam)
and Having both Steam and Xfire disabled in game got STO working for me..
So since the S4 update, STO looks to be having troule with non-sto overlayes in game (Steam and xfire)..
*edit*
Just to note, you don't have to 'Not have xfire or Steam running', just go into their options and disable the in-game option for STO.. they can still run in the background and count your 'time played' just not have the in-game functions like chat/screen-shots/voice/..etc... happening with their overlays..
just came accross this thread and have disabed my xfire after several atempts at geting back ingame will test if i can load up xfire whislt ingame see if it crashes.
edit: i can confirm that xfire is the cuplprit on my system as soon as it start up and logs in my game crashed to be more specific is Xfire ingame, they need to update the compatibility with sto
I have had similar issues with crashing and I didn't realise it was Xfire (technically it isn't, details further on) and I disabled Xfire in-game, the crashes went away.
Being that now I'm without Xfire and thus I couldn't do video captures anymore, I loaded FRAPS up. That is where things looked clearer (or muddier *grin*). The FPS counter at the corner of the screen would sometimes disappear, and sometimes appear as I played STO.
This leads me to believe that Season 4 STO could have done something to the graphics engine to disrupt the DirectX/Direct3D overlay functions, inadvertently causing crashes and such.
Thus I believe even if you're using Raptr, or Steam (I don't use either one of them for STO), similar problems would probably exist for you too.
If you're on Steam and want to play STO without Steam, just make a shortcut to your desktop linking directly inside Steam's "SteamApps->common" folders into the STO folder directly to the GameClient.exe. It'll launch STO without Steam.
Speakning of graphics engines, pre-S4 I had decent framerates (40+ fps) in space and ground. Post-S4, my framerates dropped to 5-15fps for both. Took me awhile to figure out that turning OFF "Dynamic Lighting" brought my framerates back, but it still wasn't back at pre-S4 levels. On average I'd say I lost about 10 fps.
Season 4 definitely has been mucking around with the graphics engine...
hi just found x-fire was causing my keyboard not to work in game after S4.
AH HA just read above replies how makes a little sense... I was using through steam to till i had this problem but 1 of my fixes was to reinstall which worked (until 50mb hotfix) I reinstalled using my retail version to save time so not using steam now.. and no X-Fire so works fine now..
Just had a thought i wonder if it only effects direct X11 graphix cards? my spare pc works just fine with X-Fire and it has a 5870 and the pc im having a problem with has 6950 ...
Hey guys, i had the same issues, as someone has already posted how to resolve the issue, just thought id comfirm him, i did this before reading his post, kept getting graphical errors and crashing, keyboard not working, closed xfire, and ran STO through the steam folder instead of launching it in steam and there are no issues now, before with steam, if the game overlay of steam came up, (shift + tab) then it wouldnt work correctly as it kept as though you where still in the game but with the steam overlay in your face.
So just close xfire, and dont run it through steam and everything should work fine

Nope, my card is DX10 only. (ATI 4870) (well, okay 10.1)
Yea, it's xfire what causes the crash for STO. I reinstalled the game 2 times and it still crashes with xfire online!! So it's prolly neither your Op-system nor your computer. My friend has the same problem i have. So just turn of xfire and it should work
Its because they changed somethings in the render engine in sto, and xfire cant handel that. Its not cryptics fault that a 3rd party program crashes the game.

prolly... just can wait and hope now for the next xfire patch which solve that
That's no help for those that don't have Xfire and the game still crashes
As long as you run any utility that uses overlays (Steam, Raptr, Wegame , Windows Live Market etc) you stand a very good chance of getting the same kind of crashes.

This problem isn't exclusive only to Xfire.
This means that it's something Cryptic borked.
I am happy with the graphics update, allows me to run the game with a moderately higher texture resolution than "50%" and actually see some of the pretty art that was put into the game. But if this means that I can never use X-Fire from within game I will happily go back to the old graphics setup and run at reduced settings.
Is there a happy middle ground where, we keep the fancy graphics upgrade, and get in game overlay programs back?
Comments
I always have Xfire on, i like to track my game hours, im a geek afterall
Patched up, loaded up. Crashed on load up..
attempt 2 crashed about 1 min in game
attempt 3 crashed at character select..
Came on forums to have a nose, saw this post, turned off Xfire and ive stopped crashing
So there is definitely a confliction with Xfire somewhere since the patch.
So if you guys are still having issues, head over to the xfire forums (http://www.xfire.com/forums/182686/topic/2783848/ ) and tell them whats going on with their program.
I was having no issues prior to the Season 4 patch.
I posted to the XFire forums using Reon's link above, I encourage anyone else having this issue to do the same.

If two programs are fighting over the same hardware resource, such as a microphone, Bad Things Happen.
The voice chat doesnt have anything to do with it. Its just the UI overlay causing STO to crash.

I'm sure both Cryptic and X-Fire are investigating the issue, and I'm confident that a solution will be found.
