Ok, so while I am slowly building a gaming rig, I decided to purchase one of STO's partner's machines. I got the Alienware M14x. Which can easily handle STO's graphic requirements on max settings.
However, because of the partnership, I am wondering if anyone has done work on integrating STO with AlienFX to have the keyboard lights report on in-game events?
Due to the partnership, this would be a logical step. Thoughts?
AFAIK any partnership with a hardware manufacture would be purely for marketing purposes. Plus, again AFAIK, the AlienFX has no other function, or ability, other than illumination.
Utilizing the AlienFX SDK, the lighting could be used for multiple functions. I currently have an app that changes the colors of the different zones based on temperature and/or load of the GPU and CPU cores.
STO could use this functionality to have some zones turn red or blue depending on faction played, when we go to red alert, warping, shields low, etc.... It is not just aesthetics, but for in game notification without a pop-up.

That could actually be kinda cool. I didn't know that the had a SDK for AlienFX.
Which would make it nice since they are a STO partner, they could utilize the SDK to provide some incentive to get Alienware hardware. Eve Online already uses the AlienFX SDK. I'll try to ask the question in the next "Ask Cryptic" at the end of the month

Where did you get that? I could use something like that on my m17x
Sup guys , just wondering what settings you guys play STO graphically on your AW's, i can almost run everything maxed but Post processing which makes the game look amazing when enabled. For some reason it knocks my 2nd gpu out and i have to tab out and in to fix the stutter.
My specs for reference are - m17x r2 / 2x5870 CF / i7 940XM / 250SSD /8gb Ram and RGB Screen.
QFT. I still play EVE from time to time, and they're able to use the keyboard lighting on my m17x as a sort of notification system, and while they're the first I ever heard doing so, they're not the only one. Fable III for the PC is also capable of the same thing, turning the keyboard red when you enter combat and flashing it red when at low health, among other things.
I think the way I'd like to see this, providing it's possible, is to do much the same as Fable III, turning the keyboard red when entering combat (obvious Red Alert is obvious), and when at low health causing the keyboard lighting to flicker, like we tend to see all the consoles in Star Trek do when a ship takes serious damage. Maybe briefly flashing the keyboard a certain color to indicate that you've been hit with certain debuff types (red - tactical, blue - science, yellow - engineering)?
My keyboard stays red because it's the nebula red special edition m17x and it just seems odd when I set it at any other color, but I'd be up for the "ALIENWARE" being a notification area since it's right at the bottom of the screen.

Good idea. If it's a small feature, maybe somebody can do it as a side project or roll it into something else.

Haven't tried tribble yet, but I hope DX11 will be even awesomer....
