What are the point of the "pre downloads"?

Every time I predownload a patch (at game exit) it completes, but then I just have to do the whole thing over again later in the day when the (game entry) patch is posted.

purpose of the predownload is to download the majority of the patch to a spot on the directory. then when the patch is live you only need to download a smaller changed patching and the rest of the patching is done from the file stored on the harddrive.

thus save time patching and bandwith as you are not downloading the entire patch when everyone else is doing it.

The 2nd patch always seems the same as the first to me, both very large.

the first patch will download the content, and should take however long it takes (10 minutes, 20 minutes etc) depending on size and your internet speed.

the second is just copying the files over, which should take 10-20 seconds plus any extra minor updates. it will more or less look the same but it should pretty quick.

so while they look the same the prepatch should take much, much longer than the second. if they are both taking the same amount of time and you're certain that it is downloading it twice then that is wrong. you can shut down the prepatcher at any time after you exit sto and then you only have to download it once on the actual patch day if its becoming a problem.
