...this is from a die hard Trek fan that's dreamed of a Trek MMO for the last decade. I finally picked it up for $9 and tried out the 30 day demo... ouch. That was not the Trek experience I dreamed of at all. I've played for about 20 minutes and am very frustrated. The character seems like he's moving through molasses. I hate the control settings, it feel like I'm playing Castle Wolfenstein instead of a modern FP game. When I talk to NPC's I have to press the next button several times before it actually moves to the next bit of dialogue. My first run-in with the Borg was laughable at best. They kept clipping through objects or would stand on the strangest of things. I'm sure some of the things like the controls are remappable more to my liking, but I'm not sure I even want to invest any more time than I've already spent in it. Does it get better?...

I've never had a run-in with feeling like my toon is moving through molasses, nor have I had many problems with having to click the next/continue/whatever buttons to cycle through dialogue. Occasionally it'll get wiggy, but it isn't exactly a common occurrence for me at least.

With that, are you sure you're not dealing with a sub-par gaming rig and/or internet connection? Are you pressing shift to run?

I have seen a fair amount of odd graphical glitches in my time since beta. They do tend to get smoothed out though... mostly... eventually...

The control settings are pretty standard as far as I can tell, but yes, you can customize them through the options menu.

I, for one, like the game a lot. So, in my opinion, it does get better. There's a big ground update coming out in a couple months, though. If you want my advice, I'd say keep trying it out with the demo. If you think it has potential but you're not hooked, try it again in late July or early August after the ground combat revamp and make up your mind then.

It sounds very much like your machine may not meet the minimum specs for this game, or may have something else going on hindering performance.

You might post your specs in the Tech Support forum for analysis by the knowledgeable folks there.

No need to troll someone who's just asking a question, you guys.

It does sound like this is more of a technical problem, so I'll move this thread over there.

tgentry: Could you give us your PCs specs? It sounds like your machine can't handle the game very well.

Without knowing your specs I can't do much to help you about the performance issues. However you may want to check and option in the video settings called half resolution. Make sure that is turned off for some reason it seems to default on for me and I don't know why.

I've found this game scales very well. My gaming rig is broken, so I'm using my OLD gaming rig to play right now, which (unfortunately) belongs to my mother now. The game runs very, very smoothly even though it looks like complete garbage on that rig :)

Sounds like a combination of a couple things to me.

First, sounds like some serious lag. The only time I ever have issues with the buttons in dialogue not reacting well are when I am getting a lag spike from my crappy ISP. Likewise, it's extremely rare to see an NPC get hung up on something or end up standing on a railing, and I wouldn't be surprised if a mismatch between client and server was to blame.

As for moving like molasses, are you rubberbanding, getting stuck, and jerking around (lag), or are your animations just very slow?

If it's the latter, did you by chance happen to create a very tall, scaled up character? This game supports character heights ranging from midget to giant, but since every character runs the same speed in feet/meters per second, little people have to move their legs faster to cover the same distance, while extremely large characters have their animations slowed down so they don't bound ahead.

If that isn't the issue, then I would say yes, it may well be your setup. I have, in another game (Advent Rising), experienced very slow animations while playing it on my laptop, because it isn't up to snuff, while it ran very well on a better computer.

Post your specs and hopefully one of us can help.

Also sorry about that one troll post up there, this community is one of the best you will find in an MMO, and that kind of thing is rare.

Go into the game. Turn down ALL your graphical settings as low as they will go. Then slowly increase them.

I did this when my 8800 video card failed me and I had to run on the motherboard adapter. That was a 6700 or something like that... Game looked like TRIBBLE but kept running for the two weeks it took to find a new video card.

I suspect it's a question of dialing in the settings. Once you do that you'll be up and running and killing Borg with the best of us. (I am not the best of us)

If you have a rig that can handle it, STO can offer you Graphics comparable with all the best games out there.

The only thing that is a bit laggy atm, is the UI at grounds, but only periodically. This is said to be fixed in season 4, in June/July.

(Known issue: If you have Nvidia graphics, even top of the line cards will stutter if you turn shadows above 'Low'. This is a Nvidia driver issue, and a lot of players are holding their breath waiting for a fix...)

Not as universal as you make it, GTS 250 1 gig nvidia card, maybe one update behind latest in drivers, set at high like most settings are set between highest and 175%, no issue.

It's more the higher end Nvidia cards which really, don;t with much games offer any bonus beyond a 9800/250 anyway. It's just how they made their later cards it seems.

On reading the OP's post, i don't think it has ANYTHING to do with graphics, to mee it sounds like Lag and Latency.

Yes, for people of certain area's of the world who can only access 1.5 connections, STO is a bit.....more demanding for a game that has less on your bandwidth, which I put it down to a not so professional build of the game itself. So whilst other online games may be smooth, and those games may have more to offer and more ongoing mechanics, they do seem to use less than half of your net in comparison to STO.

So check your IP, pings, latencies etc...if you're limited like say, the vast majority of the southern hemisphere....your system specs doesn;t matter, your internet privider does, and the service you opted for.

If I pay any less than 59 bucks a month where I am, I couldn't play STO smoothly. (yet smooth in virtually every other online game)

If I pay 150 bucks a month, I would be flawless.

At the moment I am middle, but again, hardware is usually the last issue, if you're not on a spoilt internet connection, then your issues for this game alone above almost any other over the net, is your internet.

It more boils down to your IP plan.

I run 2 computers simultaneously on a single 1.5 DSL connection with no lag problems. So 1.5 is plenty. It does not sound like you are playing the same game we are. It is a lot better than what you describe, but I don't know what it will take to get you here. You don't use satellite do you?

Yes, the GTX series i believe, at least the 400 and 500 series.

I'm located in Europe, with a 1.0 mbit connection, and have no lag issues. I also run Teamspeak, without it affecting performance.

    Hmmm... Join date March 2010

Anyway, I have three computers running STO simultaneously on a 1.0 Mb wireless connection and only rarely have issues with rubber banding (usually when the wind is blowing really hard). However, my ISP is upgrading their towers this year to 4G (6Mb), so I will be a happy camper.

STO is pretty hard on graphic hardware. Of the three computers, only one is a decent system and shows well. The other two have the graphics turned down for better playability.

If he isn't rubber-banding, I would guess it is the graphic settings, rather than Internet connection, as the culprit.
