Universal Console Slots??

I was a little disapointed by the fact the the retrofit ships had the fewest console slots of all admiral level ships and it got me thinking. What about universal console slots that give us the ability to upgrade TAC/ENG/SCI to fill in gaps or expand abilities further. Rather than have these based on ship rank they could be based on skill points say one at captain and one at fleet admiral (new rank coming soon) so that ships don't become too powerful. Or alternatively have the console level capped at commander.

Thoughts? or is this a pipe dream.

The thing to remember about the retrofit ships is that they trade a console for a unique ability (cloak, separation, alblative armor) and they also get the ensign BOff slot assigned to the same class as the ship type. It's not a gap TRIBBLE as it is a change in function.

All that said, I wouldn't be for universal console slots as I think that opens up a lot of holes in gameplay balance, but I would be up for a few more rare universal consoles like the borg one. In fact, taking it a step further, I'd be up for a 4th line of starships being a universal type. Something middle of the road as far as engines, hull, weapons, etc, with balanced console slots, a smaller set number of tact/eng/sci BOffs and then the remaining officers would be universal officers.

True, but apart from engineering team all engineering ensign abilities share cool downs and your much more likely to have engineering team at a higher rank.

I am all with you on the middle road but you can argue that apart from hull strength you can already have it by buffing up your ship in the areas your lacking using consoles.

It would be nice for each ship to have a universal bridge officer slot capped at leutenant though.

This would make for no brainer cookie cutter builds.

Your a healer.... ok run 9 SIF units so you can have a 20k Engi team 3 heal.
Your a escort... ok run 9 dmg units so you can one shot everything.
You a Annoyance Sci... ok run 9 Sensor probe units so your Scramble 3 lasts for 1:30

The ships where designed to have a number of each unit type for balance reasons. Honestly there was a bug until recently that allowed people to slot things where they didn't belong and it was a massive unfair advantage. After Cryptic fixed that bug I doubt they would re create it on purpose.

I understand where your coming from it would be cool to super min max the build... but everyone else would too and there would be major issues with balance. The refits make a few trades for their unique abilities, again for balance reasons, if you want that extra consul slot you could always run the Non Refit.

I wasn't on about turning all consoles into universal consoles but have a single additional slot that is universal perhaps capping its rank. I do not want to turn the consoles into I win buttons because that ends up being boring.

Sure thing, as soon as they make BC availible for all cloaking KDF vessels.
Is just one little ability, surely it can't be that unsettling. :p

I agree with the others, opening U-slots up across the board invites disaster, even if its just one per ship.
I prefered the XO idea where your XO choice could influence the vessel build based the XO's carreer choice. SO if one wanted more science influence in a build then choose a scienc XO.
Didn't happen and most likely for the same reasons.

Fair enough. I just feel that there needs to be more customisation for my ship. Universal consoles slots may not be the way to go but what about something else. How about adding (similar to deflector/shields/impulse engines) warp core/computer network/sensors (sight range)/life support. Again I don't want an I win button just add to customisation options.

Aye, I would prefer that rather than universal console slots we had more unique (no stacking) universal console options. Like the Borg Set's Assimilated Module, the Aegis set needs a (craftable) companion piece.

They could just make some more intresting ship sets, they did just release a breen one. (then we don't have everyone running 1 of 2 or 3 engines / deflector / shield that makes sense at end game)
There is also no reason those sets couldn't start including a weapon here and there. We could then start to see some limited stacking of ship set bonuses. They would have to think each set though of course. It should still be very possible to keep the strongest 3 set type bonuses 2 one per ship.

Of course the Duty Officer system is coming fairly soon, this will add some further options.

I would prefer that ships had more console slots, and all BO abilties would be slotable as consoles. The BO would just tweak the skill values (cooldowns, magnituteds, ranges and whatever).

Definetly looking forward to the Duty Officer Sytstem, can't wait to see what it brings to the table. I agree that new ship sets would be good, there needs to be a romulan series ship set. The thing is while the Breen ship set was good to see, its only real value was against breen, and lets face it you only play against them in a hand full of missions.
