Rumor of the Day: Roberto Orci working on animated Trek TV show!?!?!

Over at SYFY I ran across a small story. It looks like someone is thinking of making a new animated Star Trek show. Now before you say why, I say give it a chance if it's true. I mean really we have nothing new is the TV world with a Trek name on it, and maybe this would jump start the brand again. Maybe CBS is looking at the numbers witht he new movie, and want to see what the numbers will be with this project, if it goes forward. If they play out on the plus side, will a new live action series be far behind? I know it's only drop in the bucket, but these things can take off, even if it starts as a couple words between people.

Might be interesting. Star Wars has been seeing some success with the Clone Wars series, and despite the article's claims, another animated Star Trek series might be the way to go. I think the fans would embrace even an animated series, IF it was well written.

I was thinking as long as it's drawn well, and like you said has good stories. This just might work. But the next question would be, what timeline will it follow? Would it continue the story on the new timeline, or would it return to the prime timeline?

I hope it's the Prime timeline, and they get VO from many of the actors who have been in the TREK shows of the past. I think it really could work.

Orci would most likely follow the JJ-verse.

Well lets all e-mail that guy, and let him know that would be a very bad idea. Stick to teh Prime timeline, and tell new stories.

Bah - you want a TV show? Set it in STO time - in the Academy. And base the characters off people in Ten Forward for hilarity. DONE.

I always thought Enterprise was the worst of Star Trek until the movie with Kirk zero. I hope its prime universe too.

My initial reaction was no, but thinking about it, I really like the clone wars. the cgi animation is very good, especially the space combat and environments and the characters move in a smooth and believable way. the style is a little cartoony but thats just a design choice, if they made a star trek one it could be done to look more real.

Being animated also means they could totally push the boundaries of the alien planets and lifeforms that we see. if it was written well, then it could work and id watch it. if on the over hand its badly animated, aimed at kids then id rather they just not do it.

I think it does need to be set in the prime universe though. Setting in the jj verse limits their options and just gets in the way of the films.

After thinking about this a little more, how about setting the toon about 100 years past STO timeline, or you can do it about 5 years past the last movie, that way you can still use the VO of the TNG crew, DS9 and VOY. It can be used as a filler between the last prime movie, and the events of the game.

If you pick the 100 past the current STO time, you can run with an open slate, no need to tie a lot together, but still linked to the history.

before STO came along i think the moment after the destruction of romulus would be a good place to set a series, for many reasons but with sto running as well, even though its just a game i dont think they would want to infringe on whats being done here.

i can see maybe 50 years after STO is set, as that makes it about the middle to end of the 25th century.

100 years past sto makes it the 26th century and i just feel that skips ahead a little too much.

Well if they do it, there will need to be a lot of action, I don't see it working if you keep it in the realm of exploration only. :)

I'll keep an open mind. I'd prefer prime universe and not too kiddy-fied. I worry that if it's set in the future (100 years later or whatnot), it might not be recognizable, sort of bland scifi drek that is "only Trek in name" which would suck.

I'm fine if it involves another Enterprise (but they should come up with their own ship or use a lesser-known one), that's pretty central for name-recognition but I really hope they don't try and make the main character(s) the descendant(s) of canon character(s) (Kirk's great nephew/grandson, Picard's son/daughter, a futuristic Soong-class android based on Data's design (or Data himself), etc) or imply a connection through the same name or similar names.
