Hey folks!

I wanted to bounce an idea off you, just to see what you might think.

In a role playing group I am a part of, we have a bi-weekly literary challenge. The rules are easy: A Story Teller will give a topic and possibly some rules after which a short story is crafted.
An example could be:
Literary Challenge #1 : Academy Memories. Write a story about your character from his time in the Academy. Did he try to be a part of the sports teams? Did he forget homework often? Did they spend all night drinking blood wine? were they homesick often because they came from a far-away planet or colony?

Do you think you'd have fun with this concept?

I promise, if we make these, I'll join in and post my own fics... for better or worse. ... >.>

Absolutely! I'm one of those crazy people who spend hours coming up with a name and back-story for my Captains. :D

    Hi, Wishy! :)

That sounds like a really cool idea, actually. I've already made some bios and stories for my main character and his crew, so I could really get into doing some specific stories. I've touched on my captain's time at SFA (mainly, how he met two of his officers and they became good friends), but I would love to create some anecdotes for him.

I took creative writing in high school, and our teacher used to give us assignments similar to what you posted. Usually, she would give us a character or situation, and then we would have to write a story about it. I've always had an active imagination, so I really loved that class.

So, if we could do something like this for STO (even if it is just for fun; I think getting to read everyone's creations would be awesome!), I think it would be a great idea!

I also look forward to reading what you come up with, if we do!

Sounds like fun. Not sure if I'll take part as of yet but I do like things like this. I do like making backstories for my characters and this would help me flesh it out a bit.

An interesting concept. While I probably wouldn't participate (I am no writer) I'm sure many would.

Some to the detriment of it...but I digress.

Actually, I'm fairly certain I'm ahead on that - as I mentioned, I was writing an idea for story set in Starfleet Academy with the involvement of science to prank people.

    Good idea.

The idea is not to point fingers at bad writing, VoratusAlpha. ^^ Besides, I am sure there are lots of friendly people who could give really good feedback on your stories!

Yes . IT could be interesting.

    <<Draft>>

Yes No Sir Cadet .... Doesn't know sir but will access data base for the next time ask Sir.
Cadet will stop talking and go away Sir.

IT was a blur of frenetic energy and small quarters and no free time. Then the Vulcan Interview for the Sport squad happen.

Cadet #4356 what is the Terran requirement for this Sport Idea you require . What is the purpose of this competitive nature you find fascinating? Why do you require access to Ambassador Spock's tricorder scans of the Guardian to complete your research.

Well Im glad you ask.. Ouch.. was that a nerve pinch am i late for class now? where are we.
Is that a Section 31 Uniform? This is an internship what?

No Cadet. You will now write a 250 word explanation for falling asleep while on duty. This will be 2 demerits on your temporary Cadet record and will remain in your file for one year. Now explain the Term Soccer to me again. Then explain why this "activity" would improve the cadet experience by running on the grass in short pants?

MAybe if we talked about Polo Counselor LT Say' [sorry I cant pronounce that syllable]

Zona hates your idea as he hates hell, all Montagues, and thee....actually there's just too much positive feedback here...I felt the need to balance it out by being a negative Nancy. I suppose it's ok.

I'm not clear on what the challenge is supposed to be. The question you used as an example just looks like a standard "20 questions" type chargen question.

The challenge is just to be creative in any way you'd like while trying to stay on the subject given in advance. Topics could be "What was your Character like at the Academy" or "Write about your ship's officers from the view of your newest Ensign" or maybe "Oh no! Your Replicators all broke down at once! What happens next??"

For the most part I don't think these should be limited in their writing style... but who knows. I might come up with stuff like: "Write a Haiku-style poem about your ship's Engines." ;)

That sounds pretty cool. I have ideas for stories about my characters' pasts or how they met their BOffs, backstory for my BOffs, fun stuff like that. I don't write them out that often but they are fun to daydream about.

I'd have a lot of fun with this concept. I like creative writing (a lot), and as for your example... I've mused Starfleet Academy memories for my characters on more than one occasion.

I think this is an excellent idea. I'd love to participate in this kind of literary challenge.

I love the concept and would very much like to see something like this initiated at STO.

I like the idea, and it sounds like a lot of fun. I've got an interesting story behind my main I'd love to tell. I just don't think I currently have the time to devote to the project though. Otherwise, I'd give it a spin.

    Just be careful with topics.

There will be a natural tendency to bias things toward the Fed side. For example, a topic like "describe your character's first encounter with an Admiral" should probably be "with a flag officer", rather than Admiral, as Admiral is a Starfleet reference and rather limits the KDF and its subject races. Likewise, the Academy is a reference to Starfleet Academy, a place most KDF characters did not go to school, until many would love to visit currently :)

Sound's enjoyable. It seems like it would tie STO into the RPG groups that are out there, maybe even offer ideas to Foundry Authors!

Hmm. Kind of like a thought piece for your character. Giving you a chance to tell a story from your characters perspective weather it is about his past or how he thinks in a certain situation. Directed questions like that can be interesting as a Role Player. IT can make you think about your character in a new way. It's one of the reasons I always liked the 20 questions concept from Shadowrun. It made you think about your character in a new way.

In fact I would go so far as to say this would be my preferred means of Roleplaying in the game. I like to immerse myself in the world of Star Trek. As a Star Ship captain my interaction with other players is very limited. Story telling devices such as these would allow for me to provide a creative outlet concerning my character which is otherwise hard to naturally find in STO.

This could be fun, even the haikus abotu warp engines...

Engines pulsing like fireflies at dusk
    "I'm giving it all she's got Cap'n!"
    Warp factor 8 achieved
