I just got a letter today stating that my Job Seeker's allowance has been stopped so it's more than likely that my internet will get cut off as I wont be able to pay my bill now in May.
Job Seeker's allowance is a benefit for people in the UK, it entitles people who are seeking work a certain amount of money every two weeks. Provided that the "job seeker" goes to the job center to sign and provides a list of all the jobs they've applied for.
So I apply for every job that I can find that I am suitable for every week, but back on the 14th of March. The job center gives me two jobs to apply for, I go home apply for one, go out and then forget what I did with the other job. I basically lost the bit of paper that has the info on it, so two weeks later the people at the job center tell me I may be loosing my benefit and now I have.
If you live in the UK and you're unemployed don't make the same mistake that I have. Make sure you keep all the paper work they give you in a safe place.
I'll keep you updated while I still have internetz, but I really don't know how I'm expected to survive with no money.
I really would love a job, and apply for them on a regular basis, but I know what you're saying. I just made a silly mistake and for that, I feel like I've received a death sentence.
I'm going to appeal against their decision but don't think it'll work, and apparently I have an option to claim money for hardship or something.
Just be prepared to do something you might not immediately be "suitable" for.
I am to a degree and apply for all jobs that I am suitable for, but what I mean by suitable is that for example if a job requires me to have a driving licence or a security licence, then I'm not suitable for it because I don't have those things.
There are certainly jobs around, but due to my lack of qualifications and due to the hundreds of people all applying for the same jobs, I almost never get a reply from any employers. I've had a single interview this year, it was a group interview involving about 20 people but I didn't get through to the 2nd stage of the interview process.
The point, technically, is that you could say you did interviews for 20 jobs a week. Unrealistic, of course, but as they can't check (confidential data, personal privacy rules etc), they cannot be sure 100%.
However, the paperwork you sign basically says you have to be honest. I generally did about 6 hours of work-related activites when I was on JSA. Mainly, appling for 2 jobs a week and nosing round teh internets.
Can't you apply for emergency payments, when this happened to me about 6 years ago, I could apply to get emergency payments of about half the normal JSA payment so I still had some money coming in
Well..Luckily my wife works at her family's restaurant. That and her parents gave us a house to live in...I actually don't NEED a job...tho I am getting bored out of my skull sitting here day after day....If it wasn't for my karate classes 3 days a week, I'd be loony by now.

I think I can yeah, called claiming for hardship I think, and as you say the payments will be less than normal JSA payments. I barely survive on the £93 every two weeks I would get from JSA though, so it still means no more internet, phone line or Virgin Media (I have cheapest package to) and not sure if it will cover my electric and food but I'll find out.
Have to wait until Monday though because you can't contact the JSA people during weekends.

That is lucky, I'm on my own and yeah I see what you mean. I always manage to find myself something to keep me entertained, especially with STO and the new Foundry, general interweb activities, without it I may have to go for a walk in the sunshine. lol
Worse comes to worst...there's always fast food joints. They don't pay much...but at least it's a job until you can find something better...
Sadly they are not an option for me. Primarily because last several that I applied to...the managers flat out told me they wouldn't hire me because they feared I'd take their jobs....Plus...I hate food service...which is why I won't work at the family restaurant (Well...It's also never a good idea to work with your spouse...lmao)
Rather luckily, my sister's company (Computer Sciences Corperation) sent out a 'friends and family' oppertunity email round and somehow I managed to get the job.

Working with the spouse can be complicated but some people apparently pull it off very well, no idea how but they do. Everyone needs space though, you'll never get any like that and yeah I can understand the managers fear of you lol nice to be feared but sometimes just unnecessary. Funny old world we live in, got to keep reminding myself that I could be much worse off.
Fast food joints round here haven't taken anyone new on for months now. and when they do they only offer part time hours.

That's how you make something of yourself these days imo, if you know people who like you, who know other people who like them, then you're in. lol
Congrats though, hope you take full advantage of the opportunity and enjoy it!
Last just want to say that if for any reason this thread gets closed, you all know that I'm at least alive and wont be leaving the game intentionally, but may dissapear for a while.
Sorry to hear you are in difficult straits Alecto! Whenever I think my job (I work in a lab) is boring, unfulfilling, dead-end or what have you, I read an unfortunate story like this and am just glad to have a job where the higher-ups seem to like me and appreciate my work.
I'm worse off. Not only do I not have a job, but I technically disabled (I can't GET) a job, and the few benefits I get (that would normally pay for STO, just barely), I can't use because of technical issues with my PayPal.
That's called Unemployment Benefits here in the states...Mine ran out last October...and I am still unemployed.
Mine last until June. Despite me going on several interviews, I have yet to get an offer. I have one company I would LOVE to work for, but I have yet to hear back from them...
Now I have some good news, using the power the internet to spread the word to people I know. I have successfully found myself some odd jobs to do in my local area. Including dog walking and gardening, which will pay for my internet connection, phone and TV sub. Now I just got to hope my housing benefit doesn't get stopped or I'll end up homeless again. lol
I should find out tomorrow, so wish me luck and I wish you job seeking people the best of luck!
Thanks for the moral support and stuff, see you around the galaxy.
P.S. Motivated to survive by the promise of STO's season 4 and other fun shiny new things like the new Breen set.

Well, if they're stopping your benefits...
But remember to make sure you earn just less than the allowed ammount for the housing benefit, though.

It's a shame I can't 'gift' play time. *thinks* Do you have Paypal?
I do have a PayPal account, unfortunately I can't access it or create a new account easily which is really annoying.
Anyone remember NTL who were bought out by Virgin Media? Well I used to have a NTL e-mail address which I used to set up my PayPal account but when VM bought NTL out-right, I lost access to that e-mail address and can't create a new PayPal account with the same bank details.
To delete the old account so I can create a new account, I need to scan my ID which I have little of because I don't own a passport or driving licence, then send the scans to PayPal.
I'm sure Cryptic mentioned they were looking into allowing people to 'gift' playtime, but that was months ago.
Thanks to the girlfriend I had back in Jan 2010, I had a lifetime sub for a birthday present which made me very lucky and very happy.
Would you believe I've been playing since beta days and for the first time last night I played "Infected" with a random team from my fleet and loved it. We completed it in about 4 hours, taking breaks in-between and one team member was getting dc quite often but stuck with us till the end.

Remember, you don't HAVE to apply for a job. If you trawl through job sites or the job pages of the newspapers or ask around, that's still counted.
Wouldn't that be sort of TRIBBLE over the system?

P.S. Now watching "Podcaster Summit Highlights | STOked 80" which is entertaining stuff.
