There has been a lotta buzz about this particular game this generation it seems so I picked up The Complete Collection to give it a shot being a Final Fantasy fan. I have had many people describe it as their favorite game of the series recently (especially with the remakes, rereleases. etc.) and I would like for someone to explain to me why is it to them or why they think its so good, is it just nostalgia, innovations of the past, or something else?

So far I think im about a third or half way into the game and although its fun I can't see why this is some people's favorite game of the series. Personally I would go with 6 as the overall best but thats just a personal opinion, so any thoughts?

It was the first FF game on the SNES. It was the first one I played. So yes, lots of nostalgia, but that isn't all. There were a lot of vehicles, enjoyable characters, and a plot that was understandable. If you compare this game to 1, 2, and 3, you'll see there's tremendous difference.

What I liked the most is that it came before all the darn minigames. Bleh. Stupid FF minigames.... I didn't like the job system either, I prefer characters who have fixed abilities.

Final Fantasy 6 is probably the most underrated one of them all. Seriously.

Heh, well I was 10 at the time, I was pretty n00bie then. ;)

Agreed on ff6 though, it was excellent. I think I've played through it 5 times. The others have only gotten 1-2 plays.

It's a pity most people only remember 7 and not 6.

Yes, Sephiroth is bad TRIBBLE, but Kefka was just plain evil.

And Aerith's theme was based of Celes's and the Aria De Mezzo Carattere anyway.

My favorite was FF9. I really liked Vivi and Zidane. I was about 10-11 when I first played that one.

I prefer the Tales series to the Final Fantasy series. Final Fantasy has had a problem with getting wimps and emos as main characters that with the exception of Emil (in non-channeling Ichigo Kurosaki mode) the Tales series has done a good job of avoiding.

OMG I so hated FF9 it mad it through about a quarter of the game and never picked it up again.

FF6, 3 as I always knew it was awesome! (If I'm understanding the proper numbers)

FF2 (not sure of the correct number) With Cecil & Kain and the crew remains one of my favoirtes of all time though. Right near the top of my list with such greats as Ultima VII

Yeap - Final Fantasy Six is often called Final Fantasy 3. I forget why though.

FF9 would be my favorite if it weren't for the minigames and the ending. Blahs on both points. What is it with JRPGs and never-ending endings?
    1. It's the final boss!
    2. W00t! I killed him! I win!
    3. WAIT!! There's another boss!
    4. Return to 1. Repeat 8174 times.

What happened to make you mad?

The US FF2 is actually FF4. It was the 2nd game released in the US, so they called it 2 so as to not make people think they missed 2 and 3. That's fine though, 2 and 3 were awful. :p

It really angers me when people who consider themselves fans of the series pass it over because they don't like the 16-bit style. I got my first taste of FF during the PlayStation era but eventually I went back and was totally blown away by this game. Its easily in my top 5 favorite of the genera. (although Xenogears takes the cake hands down :p)

My problem with FF4 is that its been hyped from different sources and now a days it feels average to me. Its a good game, its just nothing special when even in the same generation. I understand how it was revolutionary for the series at the time, but now so far it doesn't feel unique like say Lunar, Chrono Trigger, or even Star Ocean.

The only thing I know about four is the love theme sadly.

    Now, Thirteen - there's a emo story.

I have played most of the Final Fantasy games so far. Haven't played 13 or 14 yet since I heard they kind of sucked. I'm looking forward to 13 versus though. I hope they do a good job on that one.

My favorite is FF8 hands-down. I love that game and I wish there was more to it. I love the world and storyline, and I still listen to the soundtrack. Ultimecia is probably the most hardcore arch-villian any game has ever had. You take conquering the world seriously when you compress time so you can conquer the world across ALL time...

FF1 is a classic, everyone should play it at least once. I grew up with a nintendo though, so I have a high tolerance for 8-bit graphics.

Wow awesome another FF8 fan. :D

I loved that game too for largely the same reasons, both that and its was one of those games that came out at just the right time to leave a permanent impression on me. Some of the gameplay problems and relative lack of side quests however makes my rational mind realize that it wasn't the best game in the series overall. Even so this game had many of my favorite characters and story of the series and I can't agree with the sentiment more that you just wish their was more to do in that world.

Another problem that im running into with FF 4 is that its the first FF game where ive felt like I HAD to grind to get through the next dungeon. Im all my playthoughs of the other games of the series I have rarely had to grind outside of a final boss battle, but here it seems like im never at sufficient level to make it through a cave or dungeon or something without raking up several levels first.

However in the complete collection I love the graphics. They are conventional 16-bit style with a few lighting and graphic upgrades for the battle animations and in some spots, but they are really cleaned up and look great. Wasn't a fan of the direction they went with in the DS remakes of 3&4 but these look great. That and you can switch between cleaned up or the original music which I though was a really nice touch.

I only played through ff8 once. The plot was confusing enough to convince me that I should play it again. It was only in the last few hours of play that I realized that having large stores of magic boosted stats better than small stores. I started playing through it a 2nd and even a 3rd time, but the same thing stopped me both times: the graphics had gone to junk.

I got the PC version. I had "upgraded" my computer after my first playthru. The new nvidia card couldn't handle that game for spit. I could either set it on the lowest possible graphics and guess what was happening on the screen, or play in higher resolution and see random lines drawn all over the place.

I decided to wait until I went until a new setup that might have a chance at it.

The same glitch happened with the pc version of ff7, apparently.

Sephiroth was largely derived from ideas dropped from Kefka's backstory during development, at that.

I played the game when it was new and latter replayed it near the end of the PS2 generation. I seriously thought that the ultra pixilated backgrounds in the battle screen were broken somehow. ;)

By then end of the game I had a setup where my squall was basically my only combat character. If I remember right I ran 99 triple on my speed for the highest speed boost with 99 Ultima on my attack power, along with other various magic junctioned. That along with running at a consistently low HP with multiple status effect. The limit break system worked on each characters individual distress so I was firing off limit breaks neary every rotation, and if I didnt get the prompt my quick speed allowed me to cancel and get another one again and again and again. It was pretty rediculous. :p

I really hated the PC port of FF7 and even when new and I had a hard time getting working right. If your interested I really sugest either picking up an old copy or picking up the version on playstation network. I think both 7 and 8 are only 10 bucks on it.
