I have recently been experiencing a rather odd problem. I will be playing and suddenly my screen will darken, kinda like when you hit escape and bring up the menu. But the menu is not there and I have not hit escape. When this happens I can no longer do anything, it acts exactly like it would if the menu was there, but as I said it is not there. The only way I have of fixing this problem is by exiting completely out of the game and relaunching.
Has anyone else encountered this problem? Is it me? Is it the game?
One thing to try is to press Alt + tab and then to so again to get back in the game. Does this seem to have any affect or clear the problem?
What happens if you do press the Esc key when this problem occurs?
You can try clicking on "Force verify" in "Options" in the STO launcher and in case of a corrupted or missing file, that should replace the missing/corrupt file with a known-good copy.
Might a background program or your antivirus be trying to steal the focus from the game? Are you only running STO when this happens?
Please post a DxDiag as an attachment to a post in this thread (Start -> Run, DxDiag -> Save All Information).
This does sound like an unusual problem.

I run in windowed mod, cause I got tired of the game freezing for a couple minutes as it adjusted, so I ma not sure what affect this would have.

Same as always, the menu pops up. But if I click 'Options' I am not able to click anything on that pop-up box. I can Log-Out, but then I cannot type my password in.

I will give that a try. Should I do that while the game is running?

I don't think my anti-virus is doing anything, at least there is nothing pooping up. I usually have Vent running, and some times I will have FireFox up. Neither have caused problems in the past, but things change.

I'll do that the next time I experience the problem.
Log out of the game fully and from the launcher click force verify and ok. Once that is done, and if you still recieve the same errors, log out again and post the full dxdiag info. Attach it to your post in the form of a .txt file if poss, or use pastebin.

Go into your advanced power settings and see if your screen is set to dim after a certain period of time.
Control Panel\Hardware and Sound\Power Options
Set your power plan to high performance and then select change plan settings. Maqke sure sleep is disabled and click on change advance power settings. In there are some options to control how your system reacts to idling and such. Windows has been known in some cases to think it is idling during gameplay on the rare occasion. Ahh...perhaps it is trying to bring up a window, but the resource for it is corrupted?

If I were you I'd try resetting the UI to default, press F12 and it should give you the command to reset to default. I'm guessing something got messed up like maybe a box got pushed off the screen.
Well I was just on my Fed Sci buying things off the exchange when suddenly my screen dimmed and I could not do anything except log out and leave the game.
I think I can say with confidence that it happens when ever I buy/sell/craft a lot of stuff, it just happened twice in a matter of minutes as I was crafting. Its like the game gets confused and stuck in the "dimmed" state.
This issue is still popping up on holodeck, though I have not experienced it on Tribble. So I can assume it has been fixed, either through deign or happenstance.

Maybe your graphics card is dying?
I don't think so, it is a about as old as STO. And like I said, it seems to only be happening when I am not doing a mission. I did not have a single incident all weekend, but I mostly going from mission to mission.
In fact, as I think about it. It seems to happen when I am in a vendor or equipping gear. Because what happens is the game screen darkens, just like when you have to confirm a purchase or that you want to equip some gear.
It's almost as if the game 'think' I have entered that state, but with no way to get out I have to close the game client completely to undo it.

Nope, as far as I can tell nothing has changed.
Yup, it was one of the earlier suggestions. Did it, no effect.
