My memories of the Oberth.

When I was a kid, my dad (a trekkie) got me a bunch of Star Trek Models. I was really into models back then, painting them, using professional decals, etc. I got a Constitution Class model, Oberth, and some others.

I hung my models from my ceiling. My cat would watch them if I had my window open. I thought I had all of them up high enough so that my cat, Bones, could not get to them. I was wrong.

One day I was playing in the living room and heard a crash. The Oberth's secondary self destruct kicked in. I guess the Oberth's orbit was too close to the cat's gravitational pull. And all the ship could do was hit its self destruct.

Bones: "Darn it, Jim! I'm a cat, not a model guard!" :p

Seems that Oberths are always destined to end up as itty bitty pieces of shrapnel. I wonder if this is going to bode well for those players who use Oberths in STO? :D:cool:

See. Cats are evil. Should have disposed of the kitty before this happened.

Well, let's face it, in TNG, when they needed a "ship in distress," they always pulled out either the Oberth or Miranda models... ;)

Cry havock and set loose the bunnies of war, Just dosnt have the ring to it........

But any time i see a oberth class in game im expecting explosions to happen almost instantly. after flying one i will stick to the NX class for levels 1-15 as it out classes the oberth by far.

Funny you mention this.... I rolled a science toon and went out in my brand spanking new shiny Oberth class ship, decided to do a DSE....warped in and was getting ambushed, basically in 2 secs I was now space debris, turns out they were 47 levels higher than me....I got spanked...badly...lol but it reminded me of the Grissom lol

This post is awesome for the following reasons:
    • Mention of spanking twice
    • A username of Starbreeze
    • An avatar in which a girl's skirt is lifted by an apparent cosmic breeze :o

If you're a guy, I don't wanna know.... that'd ruin it for me.

I have the AMT Deep Space Nine model. I build it when I was... oh boy. 14 I think?
It's been with me ever since. Due to it having been in moving boxes A LOT, it is most of the time in pieces these days... and I have lost 2 of the three runabouts (I had them on fine metal wire).

...Hm. I should glue the station back together sometime and put it in my living room again.

I had an AMT Enterprise-A that suffered the same fate...

    I had... The Reliant, Enterprise - A, Enterprise - D, TOS Enterprise, Excelsior, DS9, a Vor'cha, and a D'Deridex Warbird.

Durring the Northridge earthquake (1994?), I was rudely awakened by the Enterprise A coming loose of its wires and succuming to the planet's gravitational pull... right into my forhead. Her nacelles were sheered off by the impact and I was never quite able to attach them properly again. The Big D also fell to earth, but suffered no damage.

DS9 was painted a hodgepodge of shades of Brown and Olivedrab... the local model shop just didn't sell the right shade for her hull, and the model was all white plastic so I had to improvise. It perfectly matched the giant B-52 model hung on the oppossite side of the room.

Sadly... all these were lost when I joined the Army and my parents decided to get divorced - while I was in training - they either threw them all away or sold them (along with the rest of my belongings), the story changes, and its one of the many reasons I no longer associate with them... but I digress.

When I get a house, I plan on rebuilding them.

I had a Miranda model that came to similarly spectacular end. My dog must have gone khaaan!!! on it like Kirk did to the Reliant haha! Sadly they got at a bunch of my action figures too =( , my 1st edition Data looked like a bear mauling victim. I guess pets and Star Trek memorabilia are a bad mix.

I lost a lot of my Star Trek Models over the years due to various reasons; but I do still have My Enterprise-D, my Adversary set, and the Defiant from DS9.

Oh, geez, I had a bunch of models... Enterprise-D, Excelsior, Defiant, Voyager, Reliant, and the Runabout. The Runabout is the only one that looks good, since I did a decent job with the paint and decals.

Old picture (with me for scale)

I had some of the models. I believe they were all the AMT ones, and some of the pics in this thread are the same as the ones I had. Never the Oberth, though.

I had a Klingon Bird of Prey, the Enterprise D, TOS Enterprise, and Voyager. Voyager is sitting on a shelf behind me right now.

The Klingon BoP never got completed. The parts didn't fit together right (which isn't uncommon with the kits), but no amount of playing with it could get it to work. If I recall, though it's been a while, it was the mechanism to move the wings that wouldn't line up.

The Enterprise D came out well enough and was actually my first model kit I put together. It's sitting in a box somewhere around here.

The TOS Enterprise came out well, too, but the decals on top of the saucer section started coming off soon after it was complete. It sat on a high shelf where the missing decals wouldn't be noticeable. Sadly, one of its nacelle pylons broke the last time I moved.

I also had the Refit Enterprise, but the pylons with the nacelles were too heavy for where it attached to the Engineering hull... I think. All I remember is one of the pylons wouldn't stay for anything. I learned the hard way that model plastic plus Epoxy equals melted model. :(

What you should have done was hang the cat from the ceiling.
