When I click on the Star Trek icon from my desktop and the main screen appears like it should and the launcher version is CL_2011_04_15_17_48, and then type in my account name and password and click on submit and the launcher does load and says it is ready at the bottom and I click on engage.
Then I get a window that says that the cryptic game launcher has stopped working. A problem caused the program to stop working correctly and windows will close the program and notify you if a solution is available.
Right now I can't play the game and do not know why or how to fix this problem. I have already completely un-installed the game, re-installed it and seem to be still having the same problem. I am currently running with windows 7 home premium service pack 1 and using internet explorer version 9.
If anybody else is having that same problem and has a solution on how to fix it please let me know.
I also has completely scanned my computer for anti-viruses but did not find any.
Try going into your sto folder and click the exe from there. It's not recommended, as the launcher is needed to update files, but it should get you in.
Barring that, top of the launcher, click options click force verify and ok. then restart the launcher.
post the last few lines in any log files you have. in the cryptic studios folder should have crash, shutdown, error in the /live/logs there may be a gameclient log file.
besure if using win 7 or vista you have the startrekonline.exe and gameclient exe properties set to run as admin
certian antivirus probgrams like panda 2011 corrupts the files on download
My launcher did the same on 4/17. First I searched the forums to see if anything like this had already cropped up (i.e. launcher crashes after trying to automatically update itself). The closest I could find were the recent website & log-in/slow game play issues for European customers. This didnt apply to me since Im located in the US and its a problem actually launching the game, not slow game play or website access.
Because their latest answer didnt fix the problem I decided to search the forums again, and found this thread created today. Yes, Im an unsatisfied customer, but I am trying to be a reasonable one as well. Im pleased that Atari has a web-based support system (instead of a phone line to call) and there has been a speedy turnaround in answering tickets. Less than 24 hours turnaround is pretty good. Im just not satisfied with what they appear to be positing as their final answer, especially since the facts dont appear to back up their claim.
Im sorry the person who created this thread went through the trouble of uninstalling and reinstalling the game with no results. I came close to doing that myself, and am glad I spared myself the trouble, especially considering the numerous updates that have been loaded in the past few months.
This did start the game loading screens (closest Ive got to the game in a week), and allowed me to enter my password, but the server timed out at log in. I tried this twice, same result; timed out. Even if it did work it didnt address the real problem the launcher is broken following its attempt to update itself.
I tried the launcher after trying tedgp123s suggestion, hoping that somehow getting that close to starting the game would prompt the launcher to update itself again. Nope. Same crash.
When I go to close down the crashed launch attempt I am told that this is an error that needs to be debugged (there is no callstack information (NULL callstack)) and asks if I want to wait for a programmer. When I click on wait for programmer there is no indication that anyone is being notified, not that I expect Cryptic or Atari to have row after row of programmers just sitting around waiting to be flagged to debug someones launcher.
When I click on DEBUG I get a Windows message saying: Cryptic Game Launcher has stopped working. A problem caused the program to stop working correctly. Windows will close the program and notify you if a solution is available. Then I click on close program, which closes out the crash, but does not give me any solution.
There is an answer to this I just have no idea what it is.
the minimum requirement is
-Video: NVIDIA GeForce 7950/ ATI Radeon X1800/ Intel HD Graphics
if you card is older than these cards in design then it is below minium and they are not required to fix issues with hardware below minium.
the thing with using unsupported hardware is that you may get it to work but dev code to the minium specs and at anytime a feature or code added to a patch that is not supported by unsupported card can break the game.

I am running STO on two computers with IE9 and SP1 for Win7 just fine, so that is not what's causing it.
Please run DxDiag (from the "Start" orb and "Run" - or press Windows key + R). Click "Save all information" and post it here as an attachment or within a reply post in the thread.

I've been playing on a Sony Vaio laptop with the Mobile Intel 4 series Express Chipset family. I do not know if it is older than the three listed in the minimum specs, but it is apparently not an equivalent to the NVIDIA GeForce, ATI Radeon or Intel HD Graphics... I understand (well, I think I understand) your explanation on why the game has run flawlessly for the prior four months on this laptop. It appears to come down to a below-spec chipset, and I've just been lucky that things have run as smoothly as they have considering the situation.
I really, REALLY hope that is the actual problem. I can totally fix that since I will be buying a new desktop computer in the next couple of weeks anyway. In fact, I just spent that past hour at my local large-chain electronics store with a very helpful employee who did his best to explain the latest in desktop machines in language I could follow.
Plus, when I bought my STO lifetime subscription it came with a downloadable copy of the game I haven't even redeemed yet, so when I do upgrade to a new desktop computer I'll just download my copy. Once I am on a machine that exceeds the minimum requirements I think I'll be good to go.
Thanks for your help. I'll just plan on just being out of the game until I upgrade to a new desktop machine.
I have been unable to get STO to work for months now. I would always crash as soon as I clicked "login". I tried reformatting and reinstalling, which didn't fix it, updated drivers, updated everything. Nothing worked. I figured, "TRIBBLE it, I'll get it going eventually." I read this one line in your post and go exit from a program I never thought would cause a problem in a million years, and now I'm successfully patching. 1.9gigs later and I think it'll work. Thank you from the bottom of my Borg-modified heart!

Same here... I've had Teamviewer installed for months without issues until last week.
Exited TeamViewer and the launcher works like a charm.
Never would have expected that program in a million years.
