Just something I've been curious about since I started playing: What TV series does everyone prefer?
Personally, I grew up on ST:TNG. Definitely my favorite of the shows, I always loved the interactions between the crew members.. Data's neverending quest to become more human.. Worf's struggle to integrate himself into a federation crew.. Riker's desire to be the first officer his captain needs.. I could go on for a while. I think it was one of the better TV shows in general and perfectly casted.
I was pretty big into Voyager as well, after Seven of Nine joined the crew.
As far as the original series and DS9, there are characters I like a lot, and I enjoy the shows, but for me, none will ever compare to TNG

What about you guys? What are you favorites and why?

TAS took the franchise and added to it, even if it was a children's show.
Funnily enough a few years later and my Dad started watching TNG again and I got into it, now it's my favourite. I watched all the other series from there, I like them all but TNG has stayed my favourite and the only one I really don'tlike is Enterprise.
Oh I'm fully grown now and my Dad is still bigger than me so I had to move out for control of the remote...
Two months later I got a girlfriend and she moved in but it was fun while it lasted.
Probably why the latest Star Trek movie is my favorite as well. I tend to disregard things that aren't recent. I am aware of my own flaw though so no flames necessary!
All that said I'm not a true Star Trek fan so I don't look for the same essence others do in the series and movies. Mass Effect is my favorite universe, with Star Wars as a close second.
When I got downstairs he had a blanket laid out on the floor, with two big pillows and a huge bowl of popcorn. I sat there as excited as a six year old boy can be and watched my first episode of Star Trek, "The Trouble With Tribbles".
From that moment on I was completely hooked on all things Star Trek. I will always have a soft spot in my heart for The Original Series, for obvious reasons. However, all of the different shows have their good points.
There is an animiated series!?!?
If I try to think in terms of best story writing, etc. DS9 is probably the best IMO. But Enterprise will always be my favorite for the "nostalgia" factor of it being the first series I watched from beginning to end.
I like DS9 in total. I know it got better after season 3, but I really don't think it was that much better. It had a strong start and just got better as it went along.
I was really dissapointed with Enterprise, so much potential wasted. Especially with the early cancellation.
Sorry for going off topic, but I couldn't help myself. The best part is that now I have them on DVD! YEA!
Great responses so far!
DS9 was a great series. I love how it started with the battle of Wolf359 and Sisko's first ship then jumps a few years into the future. Colm Meaney was a god-send to Star Trek. A very great, underrated actor. If you havent seen his movie, Layer Cake, I suggest you do.
I love how it took a deeper look into the Cardassians and Ferengi. Two of my favorite TNG species! DS9 showed us what they were all about. I honestly cant visit DS9 in game without spending at least an hour hanging out in Quark's bar. He was always my fav DS9 character
WIsh I added "who is your fav character?" to my original post :P
Followed by TAS.
Next gen was Awesome in the CG department, but it's best episodes either copied TOS episodes completely or actually included some TOS in them. It was way too pacifistic with weak characters. Picard was always wanting a meeting in the middle of something. Someone said it was made during the time Gene Roddenbury was going crazy? Worse thing about it was Wesley Crusher.
DS9 had potential. It started strong, but it looks like the Babylon 5 team must have complained because all of a sudden everyone is friends? More Awesome CG.
Voyager was annoying because Janeway would always ask for and take someone else's opinion rather than actually making a command decision on her own. Stille more Awesome CG and the Prometheus!
Enterprise. This would have been a good show if they cast anyone but Scott Bakula as Archer. In the books, Archer was more like Richard Dean Anderson, but he was busy with Stargate SG-1.
New movie is lots of action, but short on substance. Just like JJ Abrams. I liked it anyway because it's time line deletes all the pacifistic Treks that cam after TOS and TAS.
My favorite is TOS. The first episode I remember seeing is 'Who Mourns for Adonais?' when I was 7 years old ('Batman' was my favorite TV show at the time). I think it was during the 2nd season that the last image shown in the end credits was that scary alien puppet thing from 'The Corbomite Maneuver'. I'd always look away just before he showed up because I was scared of him.
It wasn't until the early 70s, though, that I finally got to see all of the TOS episodes. One of my local stations showed 'Star Trek', along with 'Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea', on weekday afternoons. That was when I became a true fan of the show. I remember seeing 'Elaan of Troyius' for the first time - when Elaan beamed aboard the Enterprise and the camera panned up from her feet to her head I about fell out of my chair - she was drop dead gorgeous! It wasn't until years later that I found out the Troyan ambassador was green. I watched the Animated Series ('Yesteryear' = great Star Trek episode), of course, and was excited about The Motion Picture.
The Next Generation is my second favorite, although it took me a while - probably halfway through the first season - to warm up to it. Favorite characters: Picard and Data.
I liked Deep Space 9 at first, but for some reason didn't see much of it after the first couple of seasons. Same with Voyager. I've only seen a handful of episodes after 7 of 9 came along. Enterprise was on UPN, right? Whatever it was on, I couldn't get that station here at that time, so I didn't see any of it during the initial run. Still haven't seen all of it. It's my least favorite, even though I really like some of the characters - Hoshi Sato, Trip, and T'pol.
Ta daa.
But overall I say Voyager is my favorite
2. The Original Series 9/10
3. The Next Generation 9/10
4. Enterprise 7/10
5. The Animated Series 7/10
6. Voyager 6.5/10
1) TOS
2) VOY
3) DS9
4) ENT
5) TNG
6) TAS (TAS is last only because I've only recently started watching it.)
Plus, I really really enjoyed the Original Cast movies.
There were some parts of TNG that I liked, but overall, it didn't hold the same appeal for me as TOS did. DS9 was barely watchable for me, and VOY as well, though VOY was a bit more enjoyable than DS9, at least until the Borg were introduced.
Finally, there was ENT. While the first season and the Temporal Cold War were weak in my opinion, I really loved the direction the show headed in Season 4, especially the "Founders of the Federation" story arc with the Andorians, Tellarites, Vulcans and Earth. That is what the whole series should have been, but since it wasn't, the show died in it's prime.
As in all other Trek series, their best ratings were when they had some TOS in the episode.
2) TNG ( great sense of family, fantastic stories)
3) TOS (very well done stories, nice retro feel, a little stale at times)
4) VOY & ENT (tied for horribleness)
I like TOS, but I don't think I agree with that. Many of the best episodes of the respective series had no TOS stuff
1) Best of Both Worlds
2) In the Pale Moonlight
3) Timeless
4) Message in a Bottle (pretty much every Doctor episode ever)
Actually, I think In a Mirror Darkly part 2 got trumped by Twilight. But part 1 was top.
But, yeah, a lot of good episodes used TOS stuff.
That was one episode that I DIDN'T enjoy. Personally, I felt it was tacked on and not very well done.
My favorite was the "Babel One - United - The Aenar" story arc, followed closely by the "The Forge - Awakening - Kir'shara" story arc.
These are really what I expected the majority of Enterprise to be about. Along with "First Flight" I expected really a series wrapped around the very pioneer days of Starfleet, wrapping our hands around something as new and tantalizing as warp drive, the successes and failures of this new technology, and the encounters with the Tellarites, Andorians and Vulcans that would take us from "Young upstart punk of the galaxy" to a long lasting friendship and alliance that would span 250+ years.
Sounds like you and I were both unhappy with enterprise for the same reason.
I did like some of the early andorian episodes.
It looked like they were moving more in the direction of laying the foundation of the federation towards the end, but sadly, the series was cancelled prematurely.
I never lost contact with TOS and was thrilled with ST:TMP and WoK... but I found TNG a little too... perfect and clean and politically-correct. Some episodes leapt out, for sure... but on the whole, I never clicked with it. Same with DS9 and Voyager, unfortunately. Both Voyager and Enterprise also seemed a little... ummm... soap-opera-ish but lacking the tension of BSG.
Having said that - I've seen the lot and have had a blast doing so... so I'm not moaning.
Still... think... there's a gorn... outside... Ssssssss!
Agreed.
And really, there needed to be much more focus on the Klingons, and what we did to make them our MORTAL enemies when Kirk's day rolled around.
Also, more information on the Romulans, and why we went to war with them.
There is so much Enterprise could have accomplished as a series, taking us to the very foundations of what we know of a the Trek Universe, and yet, all that potential was pretty much squandered on Suliban and that idiot Daniels.
Oh and Enterprise until they got bogged down in that silly temporal war storyline.
On the other hand, my favourite episode is the DS9 one where they integrate with the tribble episode from TOS - that was some clever work.
There are good episodes in each series but being a TV show there are many routine episodes and a fair number of dire ones so it's difficult to say that one series is better than another.
