Another Star Trek MMO in 2011

There is a browser based Star Trek mmo in development by the name of Star Trek Infinite Space to be released this year. I am shocked CBS would licence another mmo under the same ip simultaneously. I think this proves that Cryptic has completely failed at delivering a worth while Star Trek MMO gaming experience. So when not if Cryptic fails to deliver all the recent promises I at least know what I'll be playing.

On a related note I wont be buying anything from the C-store until its clear this will be the better game and I implore all of you to do the same.

Currently this "game" has no endgame and pvp is completely ignored, I wonder if this "game" will be the rp experience and if Star Trek Infinite Space will actually be a game.

/yawn everyone knows about it already. It is old news.:) It is a different kind of game, that most people myself included will probably try. Youtube has a gameplay vidieo and it shows the browser limitations clearly.

I believe you'll find that "browser based games" can be very limiting. That's the largest reason why development time to launch is very low.

Doubt I'll get into a player protest against the C-Store for the reasons you state here and to be honest, I'm not all that happy with development myself, right now, due to all the NERFS that constantly come out.

While end game is certainly lacking, Cryptic has stated that it is a problem they have seen and are at least talking about ways to "fix" that.

And what exactly can Cryptic do for PVP that's pretty much not been done now? A few new maps? To be honest, the last thing I'm looking at in PVP is the map and we have several to chose from. PVP is player generated content and to be honest, I haven't seen PVP lacking at all in my own gameplay. I PVP when I want. An open PVP zone? A lot of different ideas are swimming around here on that one. Some of the hardcore PVP players want something that flags ev1 PVP. We already have that in Eta. Enter the instance and your flagged. I doubt that Cryptic will put in anything "new" that players could use for "griefing" people that don't have many intentions of PVP gameplay as it should be. Griefing doesn't add to PVP, it detracts from it as that player who is griefed will probably NEVER try PVP as serious gameplay for themselves, at least in my experience..

I'm shocked that you are shocked that a company would try to squeeze everything possible out of a popular IP like Star Trek. What else are you shocked by? Water being wet? The sky being blue? :D

I think you are wrong and if you look at how Infinite Space plays, they are two completely different types of games.

I think you'll be playing both despite your cries of "DOOOOOOM!" STO isn't going to fold up shop because a browser-based MMO shows up.

Why shouldn't we buy something on the C-store if we want it? Oh, because you implored us not to. Got it.

Have you ever played a browser based game? I hope it is good, I like as much Trek games as possible - but I haven't been too impressed in the past with browser based efforts. I think maybe you are being a little overly dramatic.

I think TOR is likely to be a bigger problem for STO than Infinite Space.

Very old news indeed. STO is an apple. STIS is an orange.

Either way the people at cryptic need to start delivering a game already i have lvled to max a tac, sci and eng on both factions and see no reason to play. PvP is imbalanced and new maps depending on layout and game type could make pvp more engaging and worth while. There is almost no incentive at all to lvl your captains in STO, the user generated content is meaningless as currently there are no rewards. And as I stated above there is no endgame at all, I have a really hard time calling STO a MMORPG at all.

And if STO is an apple then its a very rotted one.

The reward in good UGC is the story, and there are quite a few good ones, and several good multipart ones. but if all you want is a shiny, then I'm sorry for you since you're missing out on some good fun.

Ive tried out the recent BSG browser-base mmo, which is running the exact same 'engine' as the star trek one is going to play

quite impressed actually, fairly pretty, epic 50vs50 pvp with full fighters/frigates/carriers/capital roles for players etc

They going inforce a hard Canon timeline. It is to take place during the DS9 War. If you plain to leave to play the game. No alternate timeline goodies like the Galaxy X, TOS bridge, or anything like that.

Just go watch the gameplay video on youtube. BSG is totally different, nothing like the trek game. Not linking it, just look up the game name and gameplay.

No real trekker doing rp would place a Constitution in the same tier as a Sovereign.
Please refrain from offensive generalizations like this.

BTT: The Gameplay Trailer looks really nice. thanks for bringing tis up again.

I'm not even an RPer and I wouldn't put a Connie up with a Sovereign. STIS reminds me of the DAC game that came with the Star Trek 11 Blu-ray.

In reference to kokikami comments at the beginning of this thread:

Now I'm not known for my diplomatic flare and have often commented on those that I think are... Well, lets not go there this time. I'm going to try and excersice for Diplomatic Flare this time! (Here goes nothing!)

Your comments are your point of view, ok fair enough I can understand that. My question is this: Why do I want to know your opinion on an open Star Trek Online forum?

I personally love the game and I can see it only getting better... Thats my opinion. So what! I buy things from the C-Store despite your imploring us not to because I like the items... Who cares?

I play this game for a get away and I do check the forum from time to time but as a community we don't need comments like that. What criptic need are constructive comments to help them build the best possible game the can, but we have to remember that its not all going to happen over night, they need time just like the rest of us need time.

Now if you don't like the game, stop plaing it and you wasted £40 (Or what ever currencey you may use). I think its £40 well spent. can you see how opinions can be different from your own yet?

(Ok that wasn't as diplomatic as I was hoping... I'm getting better!)

They are still using the same background technology, and that at least tells us that it can do a lot graphically that most browser games can't. Their plugin basically gives your browser access to your regular hardware.

That said... I am still very skeptical. I did try the BSG game and wasn't convinced yet...

Looked a lot more like Star Trek D-A-C gameplay to me. Top down only arcade... I'm not anti top down, used it most in SFC, but that was mostly because of the much greater engagement ranges. i'd switch when we got close.

The same question could be posed to you. Forums are supposed to be about the expression of opinions, even those that are different. I enjoy the game quite a bit in spite of some glaring flaws. I enjoy talking to people around here too, even when I don't agree.

I'm curious about this new game.

I'm going to be blunt here so don't hate on me.

but anyways, do you really think this game will even happen?

think about it, and think carefully? have you seen any and I mean it any actual Game play footage of this game.

they are doing allot of climatically hyped trailers, around, But I haven't seen hardly to none of actual game material.

I'm not hating on it just pointing out when this very game was first pitched to CBS by Perpetual yes I'm digging really far back. It was the same exact story allot of talking and pretty pictures, but no real results. I am seeing the same thing happening here with infinite space?

Have you seen this other game?

There is no ground combat of any sort. They're going old-school adventure game images for ground missions.

    I've seen footage.

If you have problems with space scaling, they'll be amplified tremendously.
If you have problems with ground combat, don't worry: they don't have it.
If you want fewer options in space combat and a strictly 2D plane, go ahead.

the reason their is no end game content is because kligons keep whining wee need more content. and Cryptic has to cut back on Fed / end game content for both sides to cater to them.
