Well, it is JJ Abrams. I'm sure they'll just bring him back and to hell with the continuity. (Despite it being the second straight movie to feature freaking time travel)
After seeing Abram's first Star Trek movie I don't think magically resurrecting prime Kirk would affect the second film's quality anyway; if anything it'll improve the film. The best possible option would be to replace alternate Kirk with Prime Kirk... In all honesty, the plot of the new reboot movies is so rediculous and terrible that bringing Shatner back as prime Kirk could only have a positive impact. Ofcourse, I am not a fan of the reboot so I am giving a rather biased opinion :P
Well, to be honest, bad plots is the hallmark of Star Trek films. Only ST:II, ST:VI, and ST:FC seem to buck that trend. (Sorry ST:VI fans, but going back in time to get a couple fish to communicate with a flying beer can? Seriously?)

True. Though I must admit ST:IV The voyage home was rather amusing but not very Star Trek-ish. The second Abrams movie may have a better storyline but I doubt it. The series were what made Star Trek, well, Star Trek.
IMO, Pine is Kirk now. Shatner needs to get over it. His character was killed, and his Shatnerverse books were fan-boy quality. Let the new cast stand on their own two feet. They sacrificed Nimoy's Spock to kick start this new movie series, make it count for something. I'd rather see the NX cast brought in for some sort of cameo rather than Shatner. Maybe break the ol' NX-01 out of mothballs or something.
the only way shatner making an aperence would be cool is if theres some kind of time travel, again, to around 2410 and kirk sees his future self... asuming the whole nexis thing didnt happen in the JJvers.

Whales are mammals. Not fish. The Humpback Whale (The type of whale they travel back in time to rescue) is a member of the Mysticeti suborder of Cetacean (marine mammals). What sets this suborder apart is that they are filter feeders. For more information on whales feel free to utilize the encyclopedia. That is all I have to contribute to this thread.
I suppose I should say something about Shatner...
...I saw him on American Pickers the other day. He looked good. Had no idea he was interested in the glory days of equestrianism. I'm sure he would do well in another Star Trek movie.
it's time for the bulbous wash-up to realize his character died in Generations and bringing him back would be confusing.
He made the argument that Kirk came back to life in one of his novels, and if he can justify it in writing they could in canon. I LOL'd. Really, just some humility from Shatner to just STEP ASIDE AND LET OTHERS HAVE SOME SPOTLIGHT would impress me.
I would love this! If the devs could just corner him at a convention or something I'm sure they could get him to agree to do it. This is after all the last remnant of the Prime Universe Star Trek.
As for the movie, it looks like Kirk running into an Older Version of himself from the Alternate Timeline is in the lead on the poll. If that was the way it was done it would be acceptable and fitting within canon.
Of course, there is another way to do it without using time travel at all. Does anyone remember that episode of TOS where Kirk, Spock, Bones and a Red Shirt got that aging virus (TOS: The Deadly Years)? They could combine the idea for that episode with whatever other idea they are using from the TOS series. Then they could do a morph effect to slowly age Pine into Shatner over the course of the film.

That was ST:IV not ST:VI, ST:VI was when Kirk and McCoy got sentenced to a Klingon Penal Colony for the Death of the Chancellor
Not trying to hijack this thread, but why are people insistant on using roman numerals for all the movies? ST:VI was the last movie to use them, the rest don't. And Abram's movie is not definately not worthy of the numeral XI or XII.

Besides, I think it's time for this cast to stand on its own feet, without the existence of a "Prime" character to prop them up.

In other words, yes please.
Depends....will you audition wearing bunny ears?
"Think of me as an echo of the ego you once knew."
umm, rewatch the first 5 minites of ST XI lol
The toupee is what contains the Ego of Shatner, therefore it would be far too demanding, so it would never work.
What, you think a little thing like continuity is going to get in the way of the new Star Wars, err, Star Trek movie?

Both stars get to play the leading role that way.

JJ doesn't give a flying TRIBBLE about Trek Continuity....he'll do whatever he pleases...and add too much Lens Flare.
