well, yes and no, you get access to the limited demo version until you set up a sub, and you need to set one up to access the full game, but if you do set it up before your 30 days runs out, they wont charge you until the free month expires, unless you buy a lifetime sub.
You have to set up a subscription with all your information with credit card or other means.
You have 30 days before you will be billed. If before the 30 days you decide to cancel the subscription you can, you will still be allowed to access the game for the remainder of the subscription but at the end of the 30 days you will no longer have access to the game if you canceled your subscription.

When I started playing 7 months ago I skipped the process of adding the info because I didnt have a CC or other means to add, so I closed that window and was still able to play the 30 - days. If you go to star trek online home page about half way down on the right side you will see a redeem key that's where you add your cd key to then a page should come up asking about your subscription that can be closed (unless it has changed) and you should be able to play your 30 - days
