Lag & Server Not Responding

I recently upgraded my computer, and decided to run a cat5e cable down to my gigabit router. I had been using an Intel DuoCore 3GHz, WinXP, 4GB RAM, 8800GTX video across an excellent wifi connection (wifi router on subnet of gigabit security router) and the game played just fine. Before my new parts came in (for the new pc), I tested the gigabit LAN connection on my DuoCore. There were zero packet errors, network transferring is fast and glitch-free. Other games work great across the network, and no issues with utube etc.

Star Trek Online was producing weird network issues, and I'm not sure if its a timing issue or what. But I tried various configurations, even bridging the networks together. STO would only play properly when its packets went across the WiFi connection. I thought that perhaps it configured itself on install with optimizations over wifi.

The parts came in, and I am using the new PC now.. Intel 980X, Win7, 24GB RAM, 2x GeForce 560Ti (SLI), ... Still waiting on the OCZ Vertex 3 SSD. Quality parts, manually overclocked, liquid cooled. Everything runs great. Only have the gigabit LAN on it. One of the games I tried was STO last night. It wasn't installed, I just ran the launcher from the old directory after copying it into a RAID0. It seemed OK. Even played it in 3D on nVidia Vision. Played for a few hours, never had a second thought that there are or would be problems. Today (Sunday afternoon, EDT) the weird network issues came back, and I'm positive if I went wifi, it would be ok. I did those network tests on my old PC last sunday at around the same time.

I would surmise that the problem isn't that its on a sunday, but perhaps conditions exist at this time that exasperate an underlying issue. Has this been resolved by anybody, if there was something I can do on my end to perhaps throttle the network? Any other thoughts, comments or ideas? Questions?

I'm currently running a "force verify" after renaming the ./localdata/GamePrefs.pref file (renamed to force recreation of preferences). It seems to be playing fine now... Force Verify didn't find anything outstanding either. OK, I just warped to the next sector block, and I got disconnected. This is what was happening earlier today. I'll log back in, and whenever I switch maps I disconnect.

Before I started this thread, I warped into Sirius Sector Block; it would continually disconnect, and I couldn't get anywhere. Then the above was written, when I warped into Iota Pavonis Sector Block..... But I don't remember Alpha Centauri SB! It skipped me across that.. I was planning to go to Mammary Alpha.

The server is disconnecting me now, as I logged back in and sat in IPSB. Just to get in took 5 logins:

1st) Disconnected (DC) from character selection
2nd) DC on "retrieving list of maps"
3rd) DC seconds after HUD opens
    4th) Same as 2nd
    5th) Same as 3rd

It just toggles between 2nd and 3rd now. Logging in, its fast opening the character selection, and when it doesn't DC, its fast getting to HUD (heads up display, the main gameplay screen is what I mean).

    So whats the dealy, yo?

After that last post, I had intermittent connection. Two days straight I had to constantly log back in until the current region wouldn't kick me... Then I start a mission or warp out, and I get disconnected when the new region loads. Then re-login 6-10 times until its stable. The last 2, or so, seem to get better before kicking me.

I can dump cpu specs and DX reports but that would be irrelevant. Its a new PC I just built, bit of a dream machine.. Its definitely not the issue. I'm putting all of this here (and the ping tests from nettest) for others, in case they've been suffering and want relief when these all look about the same for them.

I downloaded nettest, as well as did the tracert to the patchserver, and those numbers were decent..

    nettest:
    Ping: 37.0 msec

    Port: 80: 318 KB/sec 43 KB/sec 1336 KB/sec 500
    Idle NIC bandwidth Send: 24 KB/sec Recv: 1161 KB/sec

tracert patchserver.crypticstudios.com (13 jumps): 7ms to 35ms, average around 25ms. Total time around 300ms (13 jumps, first is a gigabit router with 1ms avg)

My router is a "Cisco security router," and had tried port forwarding on 7003, 7202, 7255, and 7499. The other two are http and https and would be needed on the other network devices. I modified the connection speed on the LAN connection, 10Mbps, 100Mbps, 1Gbps... different duplexing... Seemed to work a bit better on 100Mbps Full, but then was the same.

Then I remembered in the past I had to use port triggering to fix disconnections and lag... That was on a linksys 4-port from around '97 I think. Haven't had that issue with my DLink gaming router (108Mbps 802.11g), which was my WiFi connection.

So I created 4 entries in my router configuration for port triggering, one for each of those 7xxx ports. I have been playing for a few hours, and never had a single issue. This is the first since I started using the other router (the wifi router was a subnet of the security router) directly. Give that a try.

generally the port is randomised in the 7000-7500 range on connect to the servers, if you have enough security on your gaming machine you can leave it on dmz mode or just port trigger/forward that range to it. I myslef leave it in dmz on the network.

I configured DMZ and that didn't work for me. My triggers are set up in blocks of 50 ports each.. 7000-7049, 7200-7249, 7250-7299, and 7450-7499.

After a few days of no issues, I started seeing a few "server not responding" messages, but it would sync back up.. I decided to add the other 5 trigger ranges, so 7000-7499 are all getting triggered now. No issues at all anymore.

I decided to play this weekend, and I get disconnected every time I connect within seconds. I can't move my ship, but I can see chat and can still click to return to sector space.. It doesn't seem to finish loading mission info or logs, etc.. I can't access my bank when I have the button in front of me.. Sometimes I can see people navigating their ships, but I haven't been able to move my ship at all, all weekend.

Totally unplayable! Now, either my ISP is messing with me, or the patch changed something on Saturday to make it unplayable. There are no other network devices consuming bandwidth, and none of my settings changed since I was able to play last. When I ping patch.crypticstudios.com, every ping times out. When I tracert to patch, everything has low pings until the last 3 jumps which completely timeout.

I'm having the exact same problems.

I've been playing this game since day 1 and never ever had a issue with it.

After the patch around 8/9 April I think it was..I can't play the game stable anymore.
Keeps lagging bad or dis-connecting..saying server not responding etc..
You just can't play it anymore..stars to become really annoying every few mins doing the same thing.

As yourself i have not touched anything on my internet settings...everything is the same as it always has been.
I'm from Australia and ive tried the EU proxy setting & I think it makes it even worse...

Please Cryptic try and solve this problem ASAP.. I love playing STO every day for a few hours...but at the moment that's impossible :(

Worked fine before the mentioned patch. Now, hangs at Retrieving List of Maps and times out connecting to the server. It is NOT an ISP issue on my side. I've checked my bandwidth util all the way back to STO's routers.

The April 8/9 patch was the catalyst for me too. Up until that point, I have never had much of a problem playing the game. Ever since that patch, I have been getting SEVERE game lags every 10-15 minutes. If it happens during a battle, it doesnt matter who I am fighting, I am done for. So far no disconnects, but the lags are becoming increasingly more frustrating.

Any additional suggestions would be appreciated. Ever since the April 8/9 patch, I've been getting severe lags and disconnections as well. Prior to that, things went quite smoothly. As of now, game stability is iffy for me...can't even stay online for 15 minutes without idling, or loading onto a new map without a server disconnect. Lags are worse when on maps are heavily populated, like Earth Spacedock or The Great Hall of Qo'noS.

I've been experiencing this problem randomly since Tuesday, the 3rd (May).
No other connectivity issues to other sites/games.
It also will do it on other machines in my house, and I even got it to do it in Champions Online.
Again, it's ONLY to STO or CO; no other games/sites have any issues.
Don't seem to see a discernable pattern, either :\

Same issue here. Both CO and ST:O are totally unplayable now. With luck I can squeeze in 5 minute of gaming time before there is another connection timeout. Problem seems to be a routing issue @ Cogent... Whenever I have a timeout, the main Cogent website, as well as the ST:O website/forum is unavailable as well. (Reported my traceroute at http://forums.startrekonline.com/showthread.php?t=212190&page=4)

Is this something we should report to Cogent? To our own ISP? Or is this something that will be handled by the Cryptic Network team?

Report it to your ISP. They are responsible for the peering relationship with Cogent.
