I can steer my ship by pressing both mouse keys (I use a trackball mouse so all movement is with my thumb), and turning it that way, (my prefered method) in addition to my keybind setup.
I set my ship steering to the directional arrows near the numberpad. I set my Fire All Weapons to the Right Ctrl key to mash on that. I set my Tab through targets to the ?/ button, so I could quickly tab to an incoming plasma torp if needed. I have Fire Phasers to 0 on the numpad, and fire torps to 1 on the numpad.
But then when a clusterf*** happens, and I need to see behind my ship to target, I have to lift off the steering, and use the mouse to select a specific target. This becomes even more annoying when flying a galaxy and every AI ship seems to fly to your rear and your constantly looking through your rear view mirror. At first, Id have to stop steering to select a target. But, with my setup, if I know Im going to need to select a target or fly out my rearview mirror, but dont want to lose 1 sec in turn time, I take my left hand and press the directional key that Im currently traveling BEFORE I lift off the dual mouse keys. This way, I can free my right hand to select targets and move the camera, and keep turning in my desired direction in a seamless motion. I use my pointer finger of my left hand to hit or hold the arrow keys, and use my middle or 4th finger to mash the Fire All Weapons right Ctrl key. I can steer out my rearview mirror as well as I steer out my front now, and can select any incoming target with lightning fast speed and never lose a second of turn time that would ruin my attack angles.
