So, I been back to STO for almost a month now and enjoying the game very much again. My WoW sub was about to renew, but I decided to suspend it for now. I can't play 2 MMOs, let alone pay for both. The funny part is when the website asks why I canceled my sub for WoW. One choice was for playing another MMO. Once this selected, more options popped asking which one was it. Surprisingly enough, the first listed was Star Trek Online.... this was pretty cool to see it on top of the list.
I wouldnt be surprised if WoW is watching some of the things going on over here. Cryptic has taken the MMO genre in a different direction in a number of things they are doing. And they are also quickly bringing this game up to par as far as an MMO should be. I dont think WoW feels threatened. But that they may be looking into some of the things going on over here and just want to know if thats something they could implement.
If I had to bet Rift took more away from WoW than STO. Many players love Rift's role builds, it give much more freedom to game play. There was on player from Thrall a WoW server. That so many players went to Rift. That one of the top raiding guilds there didn't have enough to raid, because they were playing Rift.
Under a half hour when Rift launched it's servers were full. They had to add many more.
STO has been out more than a year. It was on top of the list probably because it was newer than most of the MMO's and just added on the list.
Of course they do! If not, they would be preatty dumb. But they're not. Blizzard adaptet almost everathing that works well in any MMO to WOW and that makes the success of WOW. Why should a player go elsewehere if he/she would find all the features already in WOW? - That's the thinking, and no wonder it worked so well.
IF Cryptic had once more developement time, IF they knew at the release how to use the whole capacities of the game engine and IF they had a bigger staff of employees, they could've been a real potential threat to Blizzard. But they didn't had all those choices. Sadly STO will loose against the Newcomer SW TOR again. They still lack of the needed amount of staff, and the budget to throw so much material in Season 4 to make a real stand against such a complex MMO as TOR. The only thing that Cryptic has to offer here, that others don't have at all are the featured episodes. However cool those are, they are not enough compared to the whole experince of a full MMO.

No wonder so many WOW players try Rift. This game offers exactly what those wanted all the time. Just simply look on the charakter skill builup and if you once were a WOW player you'll understand what I mean.
Anyway,
I see Rift as a game, same like all those other self called WOW Killer. Aion to call one. And where are those now?
Well, don't worry about WOW. It's only the hype. They all will come back. It has to be a much greater game as Rift to lure the WOW players definitive away from WOW.

I play Rift but never used the words WoW killer. It's no secret a large chuck of Rift's player base came from WoW. Many from DAoC and Everquest as well.
One thing I haven't seen in global chat nearly as much as STO or the six other MMO's launches I have been part of. Is very many displeased players people in the game they seem to enjoy it.
There is plenty of that on the forums but there seems to be many more positive posts. There are some STO players there too.
I don't think this will be a good year for STO. With Guilds Wars 2, Tera and TOR coming out.

What is Cryptic doing, exactly, that takes MMO's in a new direction? There's really nothing new here that hasn't been done anywhere else, IMO. There surely isn't anything being done here that Blizzard would actually consider implementing, with the possible exception of a faster leveling curve. The big difference is that WoW actually has the content to satisfy a faster curve, and STO doesn't.
its on top of the list, cause it was added lately.
as i cancelled, i wasnt able to choose it ;-) so its new in their list and so its on top i think.
and i think rift is just a copy of wow, i watched 5 trailers, every setting reminded me on some azeroth place.
the gaming system is 100% the same as far as i can see. there only few changes they made.
wow if so, will be killed either by swtor or diablo 3 ^^
While STo is a game that is visually stimulating to the beginners after a while you do wonder what you are doing. after a while its playability and lack of many choices and clear non involvement in the so called war becomes evident. things start to become well blah. this is the same for any mmo who uses cheap palor tricks to keep its subscribers as zombies. when the zombie wakes up things start to happen. Lets just say i am playing less and less of STO and soon will wonder why.
Biowares attributes are becoming alot better and i felt they understood the need of full immersion into a game and not half baked. To many attributes are not baked and complete in STO even past a year of complaining. There comes a point where a company just doesnt get it. I find dragon age II more stimulating then STO and i am a avid trek fan.
anyhow heres the catch. soon cryptic will be in wows place when NOTOR come out. No amount of 4 to6 hour content will save your game if after such content the high goes away and the game mechanics are still broken even after a year.
WoW killed by TOR? Not likely. I think TOR will draw the SW fanboys but not much beyond that. For my part, I won't care much about it and stay with beloved Star Trek.

while i respect your opinion i hope it is note based upon speculation and you actually going to the fully functional website and viewing in game mechanics along with actually features that make you wonder why STO did not do this. Features that STO produces say is not around but yet bioware has succesfully made a game a actual AI that adapts to your moves and even tries to out think you.
I am just saying I love star trek like everyone else. but after seeing the movies and watching the story lines, viewing the stunning website and being introduced to the game play of ground and space combat i was impressed. being a closed open beta tester for STO i was not so impressed with all the lies and wishes being told to the testers but the old executive producer.
I am just comparing thats all. Like i said if you just started out STO then you will like it. once you have had a month or 2 of the glicthes, lack on true content, grinding for no purpose, cheap 1980 polar tricks to substitute actual effects. it just makes you wonder. what happen and then you remember oh yeah C-STORE lol
Like many others that play STO.....I only wanted to play STO because of Star Trek,I have zip, zero, zilch, nada interest in playing another MMO......unless it's Star Trek.:p
People can compare STO with WoW all they want.....I don't care for WoW.
I agree with Shark... the subject matter can be as important as how it' packaged. Someone can make the best game mechanics but if it's about Carebears, it won' make me play it still.
No, I am not new to STO. I started from start of closed beta then took a long break for the reasons you sited. But I am glad I came back to a much better game than a ear ago. Need improvement, you bet it needs lots but it's going there fast. 1 year old MMO is like a baby, lots of room to grow and improve.
Like i said if you just started out STO then you will like it. once you have had a month or 2 of the glicthes, lack on true content, grinding for no purpose, cheap 1980 polar tricks to substitute actual effects. it just makes you wonder.
I have been playing over a year now and I am still enjoying the game. It is not perfect, but I am still having fun. I am also liking the direction it is going and the improvements that have come in a short period of time.

Well I've played all together just 168 days, joined at release paused and I am bored again. Heck, this game gives me the nerv! I love and hate STO at the same time. You have no alternatives. And once you's played all the storylines there is no alternative, so it becomes pure grind -.-
I am as well a Trekkie as an SW fan. I grew up with those two and I see them as mommy and daddy, I won't choose one over the other. So it remains at what they can offer more ignoring the setting.
Looking alone from the options TOR would win for me. It has already all those things STO should have from the beginning.
WOW was just a nice game and the first real MMO for me, but I had almost over a year ago enough of it. I got bored of the "ugly" world. actually I hated the avatars...uhhh, how I hated them!
To make STO competitive to TOR for me it have to put a lot more contend within season 4. Sadly this is not possible.
I have now a question for all the Trekkers here:
Would you really play, buy, read, watch any product, no matter how bad it would be, just to show you are a Star Trek fan?
- I count myself as a fan, and I wouldn't. It is my way to show the rightholders that wether they throw qualitiy products on the market, or loose money by loosing the buyer base.

Imho, i think both sides have made valid points so far.

Good Points but remember the TOR has had a lot more time in dev than STO did before hitting the market and because of that STO has to play catch up. I believe that it is making big moves forward and will continue.
If I am not mistaking and may be wrong but I thought TOR been in DEV for at least 3 to 4 years.
And TOR not even released yet...they keep backing it up to add mroe content.
I have been playing over a year now and I am still enjoying the game. It is not perfect, but I am still having fun. I am also liking the direction it is going and the improvements that have come in a short period of time.
that of course is your opinion, much respected.
on the other hand its the only new mmo out of the 2 games for 2010. FFXIV is a failed, There has not been any new mmo release for 2011. is it perfect nope not even close. is it growing lol well the C-store is but not the game or its mechanics. to many old problems that are around from start.
you say you are from closed then i would remind you to see that the game mechanic from being where none. every zone broken, half finished rooms hell nothing was complete. ship mechanic broken zones not loading. are things better well hahahahaha that is like comparing a broken cell phone to a non functional cell phone. you can only go up or close down. anyhow thats past this is now. what do we have. after a year.
while they call it weekly ep it is a mere hour or 2 at beat. not weekly. a series of attributes that would take about a week to over come in that effect it actually hold some weight. its done in a day and then you go back to grinidng emblems in the same old dailies with no newness to then. its rinse and repeat. pvp space maps that havent been updated well never. lol still broken attributes where you can fire through rocks but thats all glitchs and blah. lets not go there okay
lets go here: where is this so called war. i have seen more result and war applications in DS9 then this game. here is another note, Where are the new worlds and civilizations. where is the boldy go stuff. some will say i am ranting and ignore the questions of well where is this stuff at. my point is i am trying to see what do you love about this still incomplete game. is there something or some part of the game i am missing. do tell me where is the emmersiona nd content filled part of the game. which sector and can i get there in less then 10 seconds because i want it instantly and the universe is small so i should be there in a few minutes. I am looking for reason. no insults, just decent reason.
I really want to play STO but there is no reason too. I was only able to play around six months before I grew tired of it. I deleted three high level Captains and a rear Admiral. I was never able to stomach replacing them. Or even taking my other three rear Admirals to vice Admiral. There was no reason to because only thing to do was what I was bored with at RA.
I don't like the direction STO went with featured episodes. It's not very much playable content for the time it takes to get them. They have no replay value to me and I didn't care enough to take any other characters through them after I did them once.
Single player quest with multi player options isn't what I'm looking for in a MMO. I see questing as a way to hit level cap and to begin end game. Not what I want to be the only game play option.
They didn't fix or improve the ground combat, fleet actions, STF's and PVP. In an expectable time frame for me. They basically ignored the parts of the game or broke what I wanted to play.
Oh HAI! It's that time of the year again! Gloom, doom, Oh noes is me!
Fer crying out loud, everything is not going to burst into flame the instant a new MMO is released. Sure, we'll take a hit when TOR comes out, or Guild Wars 2, or any of these others. Then the people will slowly and surely come back. Why? STO does things so differently, so uniquely. It sucks people back like a Tyken's Rift, drawing them back into the story.
I'll be one of the first to say cryptic still has a lot to learn, and a lot to expand on in the game, but it's not gloom and doom. Nope.
Dstahl is on his throne, and everything is just fine.

Actually STO should be on the top of this alone because it is a runnig game, as incomings and can directly ask the opinnion of the community, beside this it has a potent engine and so on. So the potential would be there! But it isn't. To short staff, chaotic plans. "Today we give you Ship interiors, and in one year maybe you'll get something to do with them." Instead to tighten the developement plan to what is most needed and second what is most wished. The point where those 2 meet is the point to start the developement.
I know STO started totally wrong, I was there at the release and wonderd if I bouhgt thre right game...STO looked mere as in the Trailers.:D
Anyway, as written, they had the time, the opportunity and the money to fix the game and not only to make it work, but to make it good. It all ended in chaos IMHO. The Community cried loud of anything, and Cryptic throws something, anything out just to make the crying stop. Again, ...the darn ship interior... what the heck do we do with those since they were implemented? Nothing!
And about SW TOR. They are in developement since 2006, no mention that the fist gathering was already in 2001. So Even thoung STO would have it very, very hard. Did you know, that in TOR there are almost the ammount of 50 SW standard novels worked in? ...So how the heck, do you fight such monster?:D
well ive been here since the start, play it nearly every day and still enjoy myself. its not as big as some mmo's but its actually not as small as some people seem to think it is either. klingons and endgame do need some serious work but for the most part the game is fun. im looking forward to the foundry a lot and i look forward to playing more featured episodes. i really hope they can start to put out as many series a year as they have suggested. if every ep is similar to cloaked intentions and on a near weekly basis, i think that sto's future is looking very bright.
im also looking forward to tor as well, although my interest has waned a bit recently every time i see a new clip. it just does not look as epic as the hype and does seem to have that 'wow in space look' and im no fan of wow. but im mostly looking for tor to be story heavy and the ability to hit people with a lightsabre. if its anything like the original game ill love it and be happy playing both sto and tor for years to come.
the problem is that every mmo gets compared to each other for some reason. its like comparing every single player game against each other, or every film or tv show. it does not happen. each one is different and has its own different budgets and measures of success. maybe tor will have everything at launch that sto was not, but its funny what you can do with more time, more money and more developers. fans expect star trek to be of a certain level of quality, but there is no divine right for that to happen. we have to make do with what we got sometimes.
but with tor, they still have some hurdles to overcome before it can be hailed as a success. actually being released would seem to be the first one.
Oh HAI! It's that time of the year again! Gloom, doom, Oh noes is me!
Fer crying out loud, everything is not going to burst into flame the instant a new MMO is released. Sure, we'll take a hit when TOR comes out, or Guild Wars 2, or any of these others. Are you reading the same post as the rest of us?
This wasnt about doom and gloom, it was about a players observation of a poll when canceling a WoW account.
so you mind telling me whats fun so i can get in on that fun. what sector is it in and can i transwarp to it since the galaxy is so small?
What I consider fun is what I consider fun, not what you might fun. If STO is no longer enjoyable for you, perhaps take a break and try something else?

You'd think they'd just put them in alphabetical order.

while they call it weekly ep it is a mere hour or 2 at beat. not weekly. a series of attributes that would take about a week to over come in that effect it actually hold some weight. its done in a day and then you go back to grinidng emblems in the same old dailies with no newness to then. its rinse and repeat. pvp space maps that havent been updated well never. lol still broken attributes where you can fire through rocks but thats all glitchs and blah. lets not go there okay
lets go here: where is this so called war. i have seen more result and war applications in DS9 then this game. here is another note, Where are the new worlds and civilizations. where is the boldy go stuff. some will say i am ranting and ignore the questions of well where is this stuff at. my point is i am trying to see what do you love about this still incomplete game. is there something or some part of the game i am missing. do tell me where is the emmersiona nd content filled part of the game. which sector and can i get there in less then 10 seconds because i want it instantly and the universe is small so i should be there in a few minutes. I am looking for reason. no insults, just decent reason.
Personally? No, I would not. To me, it is about the entertainment value and the enjoyment I get from it. So long as STO is fun for me, I will be here.
so you mind telling me whats fun so i can get in on that fun. what sector is it in and can i transwarp to it since the galaxy is so small?
They are in developement since 2006, no mention that the fist gathering was already in 2001.
im also looking forward to tor as well, although my interest has waned a bit recently every time i see a new clip. it just does not look as epic as the hype and does seem to have that 'wow in space look' and im no fan of wow. but im mostly looking for tor to be story heavy and the ability to hit people with a lightsabre. if its anything like the original game ill love it and be happy playing both sto and tor for years to come.
the problem is that every mmo gets compared to each other for some reason. its like comparing every single player game against each other, or every film or tv show. it does not happen. each one is different and has its own different budgets and measures of success. maybe tor will have everything at launch that sto was not, but its funny what you can do with more time, more money and more developers. fans expect star trek to be of a certain level of quality, but there is no divine right for that to happen. we have to make do with what we got sometimes.
but with tor, they still have some hurdles to overcome before it can be hailed as a success. actually being released would seem to be the first one.
Are you reading the same post as the rest of us?
This wasnt about doom and gloom, it was about a players observation of a poll when canceling a WoW account.
What I consider fun is what I consider fun, not what you might fun. If STO is no longer enjoyable for you, perhaps take a break and try something else?
