((Below is my account of the events of the first session of our permadeath group, Team Redshirt. You can find more
here regarding our permadeath rules, but basically we will be restarting basically from scratch if we are defeated in combat. Feel free to read and comment, and other involved captains, feel free to add your own log entries. Our group meets once a week on Sundays.))
Captains Log: Lieutenant Thragin Bladebreaker of the U.S.S. Khazad:
At 1700 hours ESD time, Admiral Quinn requested that I join him for a debriefing regarding the Vega System Borg attack. There were four other lieutenants in attendance all of whom were commissioned in much the same way as me after the decimation of the command structure in the attack. Lieutenants Sito Jupiter and Per (science officers) as well as Lieutenants Five (a reclaimed Borg) and Ngirquej (engineering officers) joined me (a melee specialist from the advanced tactical school) in the recounting of the events at Vega.
After our reports were filed, Admiral Quinn commissioned us as a group to form a new squadron named Theta Squadron. The group would be dedicated to handling particularly sensitive missions on various fronts. As a sort of trial run for our squad, Admiral Quinn requested that we investigate the disappearance of a cargo vessel carrying sensitive cargo. The shipyard commander, Malcolm Sissel, had more information for us including the last known location of the S.S. Azura.
As we were finalizing our ship upgrades and refits (they had assigned us old Connies [Constitution Class cruisers] and Mirandas), we set out. Unfortunately, as we were leaving spacedock, Lt. Jupiters vessel experienced a major power failure. After consultation with the Admiral, we left spacedock while Lt. Jupiter was towed for repairs.
We set course for the last known coordinates of the Azura, and en route, we received a distress call from her captain saying that the ship was under attack by Orion pirates, and she had almost lost warp core containment. Luckily, we had not spread out across the sector in a search pattern just yet so we went to maximum warp and arrived shortly thereafter.
Long-range scans showed the Azura taking heavy fire from two Orion battleships and two corvettes with another three battleships and two corvettes patrolling the area. As the only tactical officer of the group and de facto squadron strategist, I noticed a gap in the Orions patrols that would allow us to circumvent their patrolling ships and immediately relieve the Azura. To the port of our squad, there lied a small asteroid field. We quickly navigated through it and bypassed two battleships and a corvette.
We made short work of the attacking vessels and then attacked the aft of the Orion patrols. We made sure the area was secure and then hailed the Azura. She was leaking plasma and her warp containment field was faltering. To top it off, she had been boarded by the last wave of Orions.
Due to the sensitive nature of the cargo, each captain beamed over to the Azura to repel the boarders and hopefully stabilize the warp core before it went critical. Lieutenant Per attended to the wounded as we cleared the vessel of Orion assault teams, and when we reached the engine room, Lieutenants Five and Ngirquej were able to stabilize the warp core before we escorted the last of the ships crewmen to the transporter pad. (Captain Brott chose to stay behind and monitor the containment field and continue working to repair the warp drive in case an escape was possible).
As we beamed back to our respective ships, we were hailed by a Marauder Battleship captain who ordered us to stand down and surrender our ships. When we refused, two more battleships arrived and Theta Squadron engaged. When we defeated the flagship, we received word that Captain Brott had restored power to the warp drive, and we escorted her out of the asteroid field and back to Earth.
Upon the successful completion of the mission, we once again debriefed with Admiral Quinn who sent a communiqué regarding a very important escort mission we were needed for. After we finish our designated patrol of the Vulcan sector, we will report to Earth and escort the Vulcan ambassador Sokketh to PJem.

Comments
While I admired our performance in our search and rescue mission, I am disturbed by the age of some of our squadron's vessels. Lieutenant Jupiter's complete systems shutdown placed a worm of doubt in my mind about our upcoming missions. With two Constitution class and two Miranda class vessels, the combined ages of our ships is such a number that if counted backwards from today would go back to a time when the humans were first starting to industrialize their largest cities!
I've got Ensign Four of Six working double shifts to keep our bucket of bolts flying, but I have my concerns. I know with the war effort almost every new officer is in one of these relics, but I intend to not be one of the countless number that will never see their Lieutenant Commander promotion and the chance at one of the old, but at least up to date Saber class vessels.
Regardless, the Khazad is flying and the crew and I intend to keep her that way!

I now see the irony in LT Bladebreaker's comments with regard to the age of our ships during this week's poker game. Science Ensign Elom has reported a ship-wide tribble infestation of the turbo lifts, crew quarters and galley. I would really like an assessment of the situation by our new Engineer Eight of Five but she isn't arriving until Tuesday. As such, I've retired to Utopia Planitia where the technicians have more or less written-off the vessel. "All we can do is button up the ship and wait for them to starve" one Technician commented. I was in dispair and let out that Theta Squadron will be one ship short until the Duster was repaired. The technician immediately perked up and said "Theta Squadron?" When I nodded she averted her eyes and said "We'll prepare something for you as soon as possible... Sir!" I'm still perplexed as to why a fellow Lieutenant would call me sir.

My first day as captain has not been with out its problems Most of the crew does not like a former Borg Drone as captain. My Tactical office LTC Jefferson gave me a nicked name he called me HAL the bridge erupted in laughter i asked him why and He said its from an old earth movie. Where a computer called HAL 9000 when nuts and killed most of the crew. I sent him to the shuttle bay to work on the weapon system of the runabout there. Once he was inside and he was alone i locked the shuttle bay down and and i open a com to him and said in a cold voice Dave What are you doing Dave. i then proceeded to start to depressurize the shuttle bay and he tried everything to override the system but i had locked him out I saw the moment where he craped his pants and the ship erupted in laughter as i had this being shown all over the ship. My First officer a vulcan did not understand what i was doing I told him just cause i have borg parts I still have a Damn Sense of Humour and i hope this shows the crew i and more human on the inside then the outside.

Captain's Log: Lieutenant Five U.S.S. White Sox
Admiral Quinn contacted me and told me to report to his office on ESD. I arrived and he informed me i would be joining a new Squad that would deal with Starfleets most dangerous missions. I meet the rest of the Squad in the ship yard where we where finishing out ship load out I was given command of an old Connie with the war with the klingons and the Undine starfleet does not have the ships for all new captains and had to take almost all ships out of moth balls and refit them to keep the fleet numbers up. my ship is Called the U.S.S. White sox I am told the name comes from an old Earth game Called Baseball and the team from old chicago was called the White Sox. I must learn about this game so i can know the history of the former captain to helm this ship. I was told i could change the name but i said no I will honor the Former captain choice of ship name. we are reading to leave ESD we have received our first mission to find the S.S. Azura and secure its cargo. We are heading to the transporter room now to beam back to the ship and get underway. The crew knows the mission and now we have served together for nearly 3 months the crew trusts me now but with this older ship the crew is a little bit uneased. But with my Chief ENG who like me was rescued from the borg we have Refitted this ship with modern weapons and Torps and the sheilds are 50X better than they where when this ship was last in service. we are heading out now may the wind be at our backs lets hope this new squad is up to the task.

LT Lisa McAdam escourted me via shuttle to inspect my new ship. It certainly didn't look new. It's an old NX class, the U.S.S. Bakula. I searched the term "Bakula" and the Star Fleet database came back with only "No historical, military or scientific match". The ship has been retro-fitted to modern standards or at least that's what I've been told.
