That's the point I'm making. How can a largly soloable game justify a monthly fee when one can easily pay $50/60 dollars for a single player game one time and pretty much do the same thing? This is why an MMO needs to emphasize teamplay.
No, what you are saying is that you want access to content that others like myself (who are paying subs just like you) are willing to put forth the time and effort to do. If they allow for "solo STFs", they mind as well shut the servers down and sell STO as a console game.
A massively multi-player online role playing game brings lots of people together to give them the option of playing together. MMO's are not defined by their 40-man raiding dungeons otherwise WoW would be the only MMO in existence.

I have a feeling that once the Romulans are introduced as their own Faction, you will start seeing more and more team based content. Cryptic has been addressing a lot of the issues/complaints the reviews had at launch. Lack of socialization/teaming was among them.

An MMO emphasizes OPTIONS for all players. Team-players emphasize teaming, not the game.

Team based raid content is a staple of the MMO market. They will not be going anywhere. What you fail to realize is that you already have the option here. It is your choice to not do any of the STF content because you refuse to team with others. That is your choice, so you made that your option.
Both STFs and Fleet Actions throughout the tiers would be great, slowly ramping up the difficulty and puzzle-aspect over the levels. WoW does a good job with instance finders, RIFTs does a great job with public raids, etc.
I believe they do have FA's throught the various level tiers, that said, unless you and ALL your Teammates are the same major rank (ie all Ensigns, LTs, LT. CMDRs, etc.) you WON'T end up in the same FA instance (even when teamed) - due to Level banding. I know that DStahl has stated they want to introduce FA ques that a FA Leader can invitte people to; and that will work for groups of friends (assuming they are made aware of it in game and remember to use it once it's implemented); but I really wish they could come up with a better solution then 'Level Banding' so people who might not be pre-disposed to group could wander in - start working with the others there; and perhaps FO)RM some in game friendships that lead to more possible grouping as these players progress through the game.
The FAs were amazing and populated across the board in Beta, and before Level Banding was instituted; and, while I do understand the reason for the Level Banding, it turned all FAs into 'ghost sectors' (with the exception being the VA1 FA Daily); but it was touted as a 'temporary solution' <---- which unfortunately has lasted since it was instituted.
I really DO think the FAs would be seen as better and viable content (that also starts to foster grouping mentality and at least will introduce players to a group Dynamic in STO; IF another solution aside from Level Banding was instituted that just allows players of any level to automatically zone in, contribute and participate with others in FAs REGARDLESS of the actual level ranges of the players in teh FA instance.
I think that would go a long way to helping foster in game friendships and at least introduce the concept of 'grouping' and 'group tactics' to those folks in STO who prefer a single player experience because they've never been exposed all that much to MMO style grouping.
I have a feeling that once the Romulans are introduced as their own Faction, you will start seeing more and more team based content. Cryptic has been addressing a lot of the issues/complaints the reviews had at launch. Lack of socialization/teaming was among them.
I agree with you on that part. I believe one of the major reasons for the upcoming expansion to Sol system was to add in more social areas to explore. As I said, there will most likely be more team-based content added over time, not less.
That's the point I'm making. How can a largly soloable game justify a monthly fee when one can easily pay $50/60 dollars for a single player game one time and pretty much do the same thing?
i agree that mmo's should try to encourage teaming but single player games rarely get updated for years after they have been released. you're not just paying for the sever time your paying for the constant updates that comes with an mmo. you say i can easily pay a one off fee for a single player game. i dont want a single player game. i want to play this game. id rather play it as an mmo as i get those constant updates.
a single player sto would have been launched last year and maybe got an expansion pack if it was lucky, then nothing. sto as an mmo will grow and grow.
also in sto you can team for just about every single misison if you want. you say sto is largely a soloable game. its also a largely teamable game too. it just depends on your point of view.
you need other players to make the exchange work, you need players for pvp or fleet actions. the option to team is there if you want it. some players dont though.
I agree with you on that part. I believe one of the major reasons for the upcoming expansion to Sol system was to add in more social areas to explore. As I said, there will most likely be more team-based content added over time, not less.
The devs also mentioned Betazed and Ferenginnar. here's hoping sooner than later, provided there's some content.

Because that $50/$60 game doesn't get the same amount of updates as a game with a monthly subscription gets.
I gladly pay the subscription to receive the continual updates and improvements that the dev team has kicked out over the past year.
The fee you pay goes towards improving the game, not towards supplying you with people to team up with.
Isn't swtor taking the route of being mostly soloable as well?
Seems like an odd trend for mmos to take, since it will negate the Massively Multiplayer part of the game a bit.
So in your mind your definition of an MMO demands that everyone team up with other players in order to experience all the content otherwise it's not an MMO?
So an MMO can't simply be hundreds upon thousands of players all online at the same time, seeing the same environment, playing the very same game, chatting with others when the mood strikes, indulging in a mission while solo or on teams?
A city is a massively multi-cultural environment where everyone has the option to indulge in solo or team actions in the same environment. Should we all be only couples or foursomes or fivesomes in order to leave the house? Or would it be better to leave everyone the choice of what they want to do?
I have neither whined nor cried on the forums about not getting Borg gear. I have posted on another thread about making STF's soloable before however. I'll make the same argument here as I did there:
When I sign on to play at night, I usually have no more than 2 hours to play. Generally to find a PUG, it takes half that time. Then, as has been beat to death on other threads, a group who has no idea or only one person who has an idea of what you are doing (which is usually the best you can do PUG-ing it) it takes many hours of grinding to complete one STF. Sounds kinda like that excludes players like me, not on purpose, of course, but I'm still excluded none the less.
One more point to take into consideration is that I and players like me pay a sub just like you, why should I be excluded from content just because I don't have the time to do it all at once? That is basically what you are saying.
As far as Borg gear goes, whatever, man. I am not really that broken up about not having it. If it makes you feel better, how about blue gear instead of Borg unique stuff if you solo the STF?
QFT.
I have yet to play an STF, ever, because I simply do not have that kind of time and I don't want to have a team depending on me if I have to drop out for RL stuff. (4 kids... THERE's your adventure!)
Sure, I'd like a shot at Borg gear. But I got to VA without it and I can live with the fact that I do not have all Purple gear. It doesn't stop me from playing FE's.
And I will be okay with it if I never play through the STF content. I know I'm missing part of the story, but I'm not going to obsess over it. If I ever get the chance, I will. I am neither for, nor against, making STF's soloable. I just level up another character and enjoy myself.
Well, bottom line is I, as well as many others, don't want to see team content diluted or eliminated to cater to those with socialization phobias. You aren't a team player? Then don't do STFs nor complain that you can't get to do them alone.
Should we all be only couples or foursomes or fivesomes in order to leave the house? Or would it be better to leave everyone the choice of what they want to do?
Your example is flawed. Most everyone does go to work every day... where they do work... with other people. Nor do most have the option to "do whatever they want to" at work.
Well, bottom line is I, as well as many others, don't want to see team content diluted or eliminated to cater to those with socialization phobias. You aren't a team player? Then don't do STFs nor complain that you can't get to do them alone.
I do understand that you have your own opinions of just what constitutes an "acceptable" MMO player attitude. I myself do not share that opinion.
Perhaps you are the one with the fear or phobia where you might let yourself down if you tried to take on the galaxy solo? Not feeling up to commanding a ship all by your lonesome? Just can't fathom the idea that you are alone there in your own mind and something scary just might creep out from the depths of your own subconscious?
Please don't dictate to me or any other players what we can or can't do in the game or on the forums. You can go team up and enjoy your STF's as they currently are implemented. I'll continue to ask to have the option to be able to solo the STF's in order to enjoy that content.
Your example is flawed. Most everyone does go to work every day... where they do work... with other people. Nor do most have the option to "do whatever they want to" at work.
Yes it is flawed to a degree. I wouldn't want to try to take on a baseball team solo, even if it was a little-league team. ;P
Well, bottom line is I, as well as many others, don't want to see team content diluted or eliminated to cater to those with socialization phobias. You aren't a team player? Then don't do STFs nor complain that you can't get to do them alone.
You don't seem to get the point that people that don't want to group with you likely never will. So what does it matter to you if they 'dilute' content, since the hard core groupers will still group anyway, and the folks that never would group with you still aren't as they play 'diluted' content? And your need to assign things like socialization phobias to try and put people down is silly and childish. You started the thread asking questions, people answered them, you may not like the answers, but they are what they are.
I've given at the late night/ 4x a week altar to raiding for years. I've converted to a new religion:D

I would relish a Dev's point of view regarding this. But to address you and making team based events soloable. Its a good thing that didn't happen much in the TV series for major events or the battle of Wolf 359 or the Dominion wars would have been sorely lacking.
i pay a monthly subscription to play with other people i also play this game because i am a fan of Star Trek
i enjoy using Voice to beat Stf's
as for finding a team and it taking hours on end.. sure if you get there and decide hmm i wanna do an Stf and start spamming zone. OF COURSE it's going to take a few hours.. but that's why you join a "FLEET" and start an Event a day or two down the road giving people the chance to RSVP and then when the time comes everyone is pretty much instantly ready to do the Stf
i mean look at STO as it is now about 90% of the game is Soloable it's about time that we get to do some team missions and if your not into the team missions then just don't do them because basicly if your not a team player and want to sit there and be anti social odds are you aren't interested in PvP either because there's players there to
it basicly sounds to me you should go play Star Trek Legacy or something along though's lines or FlashTrek lol
but people pay for subscriptions to MMO's to play with other people
im not 100% against you guys but the current Stf's should stay as they are if Cryptic want's to make a Series of Soloable STF TYPE missions i'm all for that
but the Stf's should stay the same adding new content has been helt back enough as it is.. converting the current stf's is only going to delay this much longer personally i'd like them to get to Season 4 as fast as possible for them Fleet base's
i mean the reason for the Stf's are a Borg Armada is Amassing somewhere and you require a group of ships to halt them i mean take DS9 or Wolf359 i'm 100% sure the Enterprise never took down an entire armada by themselfs if anything the enterprise got it's TRIBBLE kicked numerous times because it was out numbered
making stf's soloable is just going against cannon
Well, bottom line is I, as well as many others, don't want to see team content diluted or eliminated to cater to those with socialization phobias. You aren't a team player? Then don't do STFs nor complain that you can't get to do them alone.
who's asking for team play to be diluted or eliminated? if there are so many people who want to play task forces as a team as you say then whether i or anyone else plays them solo should not really affect you.
i can certainly understand people that feel, as i do, that team play should yield better rewards but there are people that just dont like teaming. a task force, forces them to do something they dont like, or ignore the mission. i dont think a solo version hurts anybody but encourages more people to play them. by all means gimp the rewards so those people are really only getting their enjoyment from the mission itself. maybe those better rewards for teaming might then encourage them to try a team later on once they are comfortable with the mission.
if teaming is so great then people should want to team. i suspect that you dont want it because you're worried less people will play the mission in teams making it harder for you to get a team. you may well be right, and i can understand why you would then not want that to happen but what does that say about how popular teaming is?
end of the day gozer has already said he wont be doing solo task forces, so its all a bit pointless at the moment.
I would relish a Dev's point of view regarding this. But to address you and making team based events soloable. Its a good thing that didn't happen much in the TV series for major events or the battle of Wolf 359 or the Dominion wars would have been sorely lacking.
Those are more like fleet actions than stfs, and something I want MORE of. You don't need a team to be in a fleet action, you can swoop in, blast something, strengthen someones shields, heal someones hull and move on without having to chat, just enjoying yourself.:)
But it begs the question....why play an MMO if you want all content soloable?
My main reason would be that MMOs get new content on a regular basis and single player games dont. And as soon as the Foundry comes out, I will be able to look forward to having a new mission to play every single time I log in. Wow, that sure was an easy argument to shoot down!
No need to deal with those other pesky players in that game!
Its attitudes like this, that do little to help the issue. You've invited folks to see how friendly your fleet is, while mocking them at the same time, as little more then greedy anti-social emos.
I don't like grouping, but its not an anti-social thing. I enjoy the game as an MMO. I just see my interaction as something much wider then grouping for loots.
I enjoy listening to zone chat. The conversations, both inane and absurd, can be fun. I enjoy seeing questions asked (even the noobish ones) and seeing them answered. Often times Ill respond with my own or jump into some debate about skills, tactics or trek lore. But id guess this is not interaction.
I enjoy the people watching, seeing the crowds gather at each new thing. Seeing the names, the bios, the silliness and creativity...or lack thereof in people. Single player games still have a long ways to go before the NPCs get this colorful or interesting.
Even something as silly as buying and trading elevates the game from a single player experience to an MMO.
I like others, interact with the community, both here and in game. This dose not make me anti-social.
And what of the others? The player who spend most their time in a RP group or fleet not well equipped or experienced to tackle the STFs. Or the player who's main focus is PVP and they have trouble getting fleet mates to show interest in PVE for gear. In both these cases these are not anti-social people playing a single player game. But they, by their game choices, have to make the choice to PuG or pass on STFs.
And we all know how appealing PuG's can be.
So I think its time we move past the mocking anti-social comments. They really arnt helping and show a clear lack of understanding.
create a new source which is exactly like STO
but Remove the STF's and Fleet Actions
then put it on a CD slap it in a box and Call it Star Trek the Soloable Generations
and make it a single player game so thus Cryptic gets more money for selling it to people who want a single player game and STO players are happy to get rid of the players who just don't want to team

Borg cubes are already soloable in exploration missions anyway, so that is a moot point.

Totally need more team content and persistent social/content zones.
We need more mountains to climb too!
