So if cryptic makes something easier to obtain further into the future it devalues the time you spent tryint to obtain said something.
this stated, how do you interpret it when Cryptic offers a item in the C-store that was previously only obtainable through a preorder or retail purchase? If you paid what $65-80 (depending where you bought it) for Startrek TOS season 3 blu ray, just for the wrath of kahn uniforms, and now they are giving tat uniform away, how does that make you feel?
You see, the problem is there are not enough players who come from the MMORPG school of hard knocks. Back then we would spend eight hours grinding for half an experience point, and were glad to have it. Now not everything was so easy as gaining experience though. There would come a time when a player would want a loin cloth, or some other darn thing, from a skeleton and what not. I could never understand why. I found skeleton clothes to be too old and dusty. Well anyways. Everyone would gather up into a party and fight our way to the skeleton. Mind you now, getting to that there skeleton was no easy task, as we would loose a feller now and again. After killing this thing several hundred times with no loin cloth in hand we would call it day and come back at sunrise. This could go on for several days until we got that there loin cloth. After some time got to passing, it became clear to the developers that it was too hard to get his shorts. You know what they did? Well do you? They did not move that skeleton to the middle of a castle square were everyone could have a go at it, no sir. That skeleton stayed right were he was, and was just as ornery as ever. What them developers did was make those drawers of his drop more often. Now we still had just as hard of a time getting to him and cracking his skull. Hehe you get it? We were cracking his skull. Ah never mind, you kids go not sense of humor. Now with that there drop rate higher, it took way less time for us to get old Pete his shorts. Sure, it would take the same amount of fighting but the chance of reward was much greater. As you might expect there was a time or two when them dusty old bones just would not drop those there shorts, but it sure was not from a lack of trying. Well you kids run along now. An old man needs his rest.

This game is lowest common denominator. It is designed to be beaten with a scant few presses of the space bar and no thought what so ever - that's mass market appeal for you.
Consider the STFs, the only missions in the game that can even remotely be called 'challenging' - yet every week a new thread is posted right here to say how they need to be nerfed because people want the reward without putting in the time to understand the game, spec accordingly and communicate with other human beings (why people play an mmo and resit playing with others is beyond me).
This is further why the new weekly series have received so much dev time at the expense of content like the STFs that have needed bug fixing since day 1. The weekly series are all very pretty indeed and have 'nice' stories but in no way challenge players - thus they are universally appluaded because everyone can achieve them. There is no risk in game content, no challenge. If there is no challenge in obtaining gear either, there is little point in playing.
These general principles are why I agree with the OP. There have to be some things left in the game that are HARD to come by as much as the ultra casual players will always whine and cry because they cannot obtain them. But that's just tough luck right? Reward = effort in.

No I don't see anything 'there' (where?) you'll need to explain it to me rather than post a rhetorical question, a couple of bullet points and a sarcastic barb and assume that you are clever.

... But... but... the Math was hard! And I don't have any friends to earn the accolades with either! What that sarcastic enough?
If a difficult task is made easier, or a rare reward more common, in a computer game, upon what else can a man possibly base his pride or sense of self-worth? What greater goal or nobler achievement is there, I ask you?

Perhaps making a couple thousand love-slave androids, that you happen to come across, cater to the whim of your every beck and call...,
Even though they know right from the beginning, that you are a cad and expert Under-Achiever.
...And are just using you to take over the universe.
Now see here, you! You're trying to derail this discussion, and I won't have any of it.
Besides, when I found my, erm, people, they were lost - bereft, with no one to serve - in need of a purpose! I gave them that, all by myself I did, yes.
As for an under-achiever, how many men have risen from such humble beginnings as I and, through cleverness and entrepreneurial spirit, become ruler of an entire planet? I ask you. (And I shall thank you not to call me a cad again, sir, lest I be forced to resort to base violence, much as it pains me.)

Far better is it to dare mighty things, to win glorious triumphs, even though checkered by failure... than to rank with those poor spirits who neither enjoy nor suffer much, because they live in a gray twilight that knows not victory nor defeat.
You DO realize that if you have an Engineer friend or Fleetmate whom you trust; Transfer Shield Strength III is as easy to get as:
Send Tell
Meet in same instance
Trade BO to Engineer friend
Engineer friend trains BO for you.
Engineer friend trades BO back to you
Yep - A LOT OF WORK (I think the last time I did it for a Fleetmate it took all of 3 minutes, max.
Also, be aware - in MMOs things change. I remember back in my WoW days, I spent two years of Raiding MC and BWL to get my top tier purple Hunter set in the original WoW. I also grinded cenarion faction (and you guys crying about '500 Emblems for a ship' have NO IDEA how much od a Grind Cenarion faction was in WoW back in the day - makes teh 500 Enblem grind for a Refit ship look trivial) for the TOP tier WoW Hunter Axe (this also required raiding a Cenarion instance about 10 times for other components to the Axe, but that was actually a fun 20 man Raid instance.) So, I did ALL the above - had my stuff.
Along comes the expansion Burning Crusade and one one of the first quest chains of BC (takes about one hour to do); I start getting green quest rewards with stats that BLOW my purple gear (and the Axe) out of the water.
My point: Welcome to MMOs that progress and evolve. Stuff like this happens as new content gets added.

TSS3 is a Science skill, that is is NOT trainable, so I'm wondering just how you supposedly trained it with an engineer, because you can't 8')
This whole rare boff and rare boff ability idea was stupid to begin with. I for one am glad to have TSS3. Abilities like these should have been available to everyone from the get go.
