Hi, I am Pink - some of you may well know me from Champions Online, where I spend the... vast majority of my time going about kicking villain TRIBBLE. Which may make you wonder - wait, what are you doing here?
I was randomly browsing in my local video game store, and found a copy of STO, retail, for $20. I thought, "Hey, that's cheap. Like - that's a month's subscription, and I don't have to destroy my download limit..."
I had been considering it on and off, but never had a reason, but I was playing one Cryptic MMO, and despite the amount of complaining I post on the forums, I do love it. And Star Trek always seemed like an okay show. Just needed a little push.
Anyway, I have never seen an episode aside from one really old film I saw in high school, with Captain Picard as the captain and some weird special effects involving time and someone choosing to live with an alien woman - I still do not know why we watched it.

That sounds like Generations with Soran and the Nexus. And that person you're referring to would the Kirk who got trapped in the Nexus, with his wife, who, becuase of Picard, decided to tell her that instead of joining Starfleet, he would be telling her how much he loved her.

No, don't think that was it... there was something involving time fields.
I dunno.
Do I need to know about Star Trek to enjoy the game?

Not really, though reccomended. As the game is set 30 years beyond the last canon production (Nemesis, released in 2002), plus the lack of canon for some parts, most of what people know is merely a passing referance.

i think you might mean insurrection but regardless no you dont need to know anything about trek to play the game. obviously it helps and certain references and moments will pass you by but you might find not knowing about trek helps with the sense of wonder and exploring a new game setting.
PinkPink, Welcome to 10Forward. Since you are from the community already , more or less, we will forgo warning your of the hazards of 10Forward. It Has been a while since a new person stumbled into a good beating anyways.
Somebody say inquisition? Summon the faithful. Summon the monks! Secure the heretic, if no sin resides within then the fires will not scorch his flesh.
I will be honest - I am shocked how much fun this game is without any Star Trek knowledge. It is... amazing.
At this time, barring unforseen difficulty curve rise, I may well continue to play after the 30-Day Trial!
Yep, it's the first MMO I ever played where the levelling (especially the first time) is more fun than the endgame. You should make at least one fed to Vice Admiral, if only for the story's sake

Oh my...
To quote Audrey Hepburn, "I believe in pink."
It's just... it's the right color. Or something.
Think about it for a few minutes, I am sure you will eventually figure it out.
A guy in pink...
Quoting Audrey Hepburn...
Oh my...
Nah, sorry, just messin' with ya, mate - I love her as an actress also. Seriously though - why pink?

it does make the game look slightly better than perhaps it is but it might also give you a feel of what the game is about.
Did some research because it was driving me crazy - I was thinking about the first film, with the evil cloud.
Don't worry, we only wear skirts on special occasions.
errm we stopped that 2 years ago.....nobody told you?
*Ahem*
One of us....one of us...one of us....
But... I am still downloading the patch 24 hours later. A pity the download is slow - I want to demonstrate my utter stupidity regarding Star Trek.
Also, what kind of roleplay exists on STO? It is not a neccessity of mine, merely something that I find myself idly engaging in, sometimes.
I am endlessly tempted to explore the world of 40K, if only so I can understand the references people constantly make.
If anyone wants to help out a new player, please feel free to hit me up, add me - I can be found at @PinkPink.
I would, but my Tellarite likes to gnaw on legs of people.
Furthermore you might loose control of your psyker powers and become possessed by a daemon or something like that. Perils of the warp and all.

Given this game as more of an inverse difficulty curve, you probably won't have a problem as you progress.
