STO Launcher dead after March 5th patch

SystemSystem Member, NoReporting Posts: 178,019 Arc User
Played last night, all OK. Prepatch went just fine. Opened the game today, patch downloaded again (as normal) and installed. Clicked Engage and the launcher crashed. Tried again, but clicking engage froze the launcher and it went into non-responder mode if anything is clicked in the window.

Uninstalled and reinstalled. Cursed the cryptic devs for making it delete absolutely everything in an uninstall, including screenshots and keybind files (quite unlike any other game I've ever owned), waited ages for it to patch itself back to current, clicked engage and it crashed. Then the error reporting tool locked. Then tried to launch again and it went back into non-responding mode.

Hope a fix is coming soon.

go into your options screen and check Force Verify, then close it and reload the launcher

    Did that. No good.

Tried it again, this time the launcher loads and gets stuck before it begins patching (the loader always does a little patch check first, that's where it's stuck.)

Same thing. : / They should let you select a more sensible browser. Chrome, maybe.

also reject your firewall and antivirus programs. some of them will see a patched program as a new program needing you to authorize it to have net access.
also make sure the IE is not set to work offline or has it;s internet options communications tab lan setting set to use a proxy or that it's security setting is not set to high.

There is no patch button, only cancel and some time much later, engage.

Tried it without the firewall, IE is not set to work offline and has no odd settings in its connections tab and no proxies. Security setting is default.

After a reboot with everything shut down and kept from starting up with windows, it loads up to engage nice and quick, but then as soon as I click engage it goes away, gives me some hope it will start and then the Cryptic crash handler appears. I enter what I was doing before the crash and then it gets stuck.
    Initializing...
    Attaching to crashed process...
    Harvesting data from crashed process...
    Mode: Customer
    Gathering Data Validation Info...

It's been like that for ages now.

My ticket has still gone untouched. I'm starting to feel like cryptic doesn't really care since they've already gotten my lifer money.

    =edit=

Tried to make it force verify again and now it's gone back to making me wait ages and ages to get from starting to check the patch version to getting to engage.

    From the Hog Log:

    110306 04:15:12 21 [1]: Unable to read from hogg file! 2

    110308 18:17:36 14 [1]: Unable to read from hogg file! 2

And in a separate log directory, another Hog Log:
    110306 02:11:45 1 Client[0]: Hog file incorrect/unreadable version 2872
    110306 04:15:14 1 Client[0]: Hog file incorrect/unreadable version 2872
    110308 18:17:40 1 Client[0]: Hog file incorrect/unreadable version 2872

(2011, March, 06 and 08) These are after I uninstalled and reinstalled the game and force verified multiple times.

And still no one has touched my ticket.

looks like corrupted hogg files or the files are locked to the game can not access them.

What antivirus program are you using? what OS and where do you have the game installed?

I was using AVG, but uninstalled it recently due to a lack of controllability. I'm using Windows 7 and it's installed in the standard Program Files(x86) directory on the primary disk.

with win 7 besure to set the properties of the launcher and gameclient.exe to run as admin. also with win 7 there problem if you install the game in the program files directory becuase of the windows built in security feature on the program files directory. you need to install the game in a different directory.

It's been installed there for the past year, why would the new patch cause an issue with that particular directory?

    information provided from dev coderanger
    Quote from coderanger....

Fun fact, the game will break pretty frequently if you install to Program Files under Vista or Win7 because of a new security feature called Virtual Store (short version: it intercepts and rewrites file writes inside prog files to go somewhere else). That is why it is no longer the default install location on those platforms. There is no permanent way to disable this feature of Windows, so installing outside of Program Files is the best option. The "correct" place according to MS for this would be C:\ProgramData, but more games use Users\Public\Games that we wanted to go with the clearer one. The More You Know.
a lot been added to the hogg files and looks like yours are getting corrupted besides this directory problem you could be lookng at

bad memory, weak cpu, power supply failing or weak. bad or failing hard drive, weak wireless connection,
windows security esentiels, certain antiviruses programs like panda 2011
    .

moving the directory is the easiest at this time for elimating why the hogg files are corrupting.

So I went to investigate after I read that quote you gave and it turns out that when I reinstalled it, it did go to the users/public/games directory.

Here is the log from that directory's pcl.log file:

That is the only log file in that directory or its subdirectories.

The Cryptic Error reporting tool has been running for hours and still says
    Initializing...
    Attaching to crashed process...
    Harvesting data from crashed process...
    Mode: Customer
    Gathering Data Validation Info...

In regards to the PC, itself, several other high resource games are able to run without issue.

    Aloha.

I too am having the same issue with the patch, except with a couple of differences.
in my case it installed fine. I went to start it up and nothing happened. so I tried it a second
    time. still nothing.

I then did a virus scan of my entire computer, nadda, computer is clean.

I open up the lauincher, it sits here saying "patching' for about three minutes..
and then finaly it says engage, so I click on engage and it goes away and nothing
    happens..

Its been like this since March 5, now its really annoying me. I tried all the sites troubleshooting
tips and nothing has worked. I even uninstalled the game then reinstalled it... its still
    not working.

I've been at this for three days now and I'm rapidly losing my patence...

    Shep

After a few rounds of troubleshooting with cryptic support, I've finally resolved this issue. There were files still in the old program files directory that were still affecting the install that was outside of the old directory. On top of that, there were several files marked ".deleteme" that were running constantly in the background whose process trees had to be forced closed via task manager before they could be deleted. Once that was done, a clean install outside of the program files directory got it all working again.

However, I seem to be dropping LOTS of frames whenever I move the camera around now that it's working again. I've ensured I'm using the same graphics settings.
