While it's certainly true that we're selling weapons on the c-store, this doesn't bring us any closer to becoming f2p.
These special melee weapons will level up with you, and look fancy, however, in order to get the best weapons in the game, you still need to earn them in game, and there are several ways to do so without having to spend any real life money.
Thanks,
Stormshade
So wait. On the same day you remove a bunch of leveling weapons from the game for an unexplained reason, you add other ones.
It's very easy to argue that leveling weapons are infact the best weapons in the game simple because they don't become obsolete with several hours of use.

So when you advance in rank, you can likely go back ... replay the mission and get it again?
Yeah. Not that big a deal, but hard to say why they did it; and it surely doesn't seem better. And more interestly is the question of do they or don't they have something against leveling weapons, etc. Or maybe it depends if it's a C-Store or a grind item.
Mainly just another cryptic thing done by Cryptic.
i got it cos i'm lazy, outfitting 7 charicters with melee weapons from market didnt appeal to me (had mats to make 2 lirpas and had 1 sword of kahless, so had to find 4 melees) so when i saw them come up i was like 'yes please' outfit all my charicters weapons and they scale so never have to think about it again.
it also has several advantages. one it scales. no other hand weapon does and it looks awesome. thats kind of the point, not to buy some great weapon that others have spent time and effort crafting but to get something cool.
The Shard Sword of Khaless scales with level too, but it is currently Klingon only.
It's a shame, this would have been an easy buy for me if it included Mek'leth's, Nausicaan and Human Swords, or Ushaan blade like weapons as well. But I'm not going to shell out money just for 2 Bat'leth skins, not when the costume pack offers 20 different variants for the same exact price.
If you have level-less items, they're yours forever. If you go back and run it again, however, you'll get a tiered item.
Why? Is there some particular reason that someone felt this nerf was necessary?
Episode Replay is a nice feature... it quickly becomes an incredibly sucky one when we're forced to replay the same episodes over and over to keep our rewards up-to-date simply because (it seems) someone at Cryptic decided we should have to in order to justify this feature's existence.
May we please know what the 'official' reason for this change was?
I would say its to make them worth using. The "level with you" scale system isn't easily changed and it ends up making the gear sorely underpowered when compared to other equipment available. By switching it to a properly tiered loot system, this allowed them to make proper Mk XI blue phasers available for everyone who simply loves that style of beam. Easy compromise without having to smash the existing scaling system with a hammer.
This is how we always wanted to do it, we just didnt have the time. We went back and updated them.
While this may feel like a nerf, a direct comparison of the weapons shows that it isn't. If you go through and look at the comparative damage, the tiered items have slightly higher stats. If you want to keep your level less items, feel free to do so. It's the same way we set up the C-Store melee items. They're levelless, but other in game melee items have slightly better stats. That's the trade off.
If you've never played the devidian arc before and are a low level character, that simply means that once every 10 levels you have to play 1 episode again per loot item you want.
Hmm, that's a bit of a pain for those of us who aren't going to hit level 51 any time soon... ...because we don't want to be forcibly promoted to Admiral (I'll say it again: we should be able to reach the level cap as Captains proper, in true Trek style) - I was hoping to maybe get some more phasers for my officers, but seeing as I'll get ones tiered for my current level, I won't be able to equip them.
Oh, well - at least my original ones aren't affected, and are now 'unique', which is kind of cool - almost like another kind of 'early completion bonus'. Plus they're all good weapons - it'd be a real game-killer to lose them, especially since most of the alternatives either look awful or are woefully underpowered (because the best-looking phaser rifles/pistols are the entry-level ones).
BTW, regarding the C-Store Melee Weapon pack, are we allowed to claim them several times over per character, or is this a bug? I've been able to do this, which seems pretty odd - is this a deliberate thing, or does it need fixing?

As designed. You paid for them, equip your whole away team if you want to. They have no EC value and are bound on pickup, so its not like you can give them away or sell them for money.

Which is substantially more annoying than you might think if you happen to say... equip your away team with TOS phasers, for example. That means 4-5 playthroughs back-to-back every 10 levels, just because you want to follow a given theme.
Likewise I really dislike the fact that things are being made Unique. The items made unique so far aren't a huge deal to me personally; but going forward I worry any interesting weapon that shows up may get made Unique, and that's going to be really, really annoying.

Thanks for the answer to my questions Salami_Inferno! This part is good to hear. I'm at least happy you didn't nerf what I've already worked hard to get on 10 characters (all at various ranks).
Why? Is there some particular reason that someone felt this nerf was necessary?

This decision stinks.
In a general sense, I agree with you HHJJ. I hate Nerfs.
As to why... My thought is that someone realized people could run characters through the missions enough times to fully spec their ships and Captain/BO with Infinity Mark weapons. Think about it... Every time they roll a new character, take the Devidian missions a handful of times first thing they become available... It would possible to get to that level in beginners PvE with even Standard Issue gear. Finish missions and *poof* - Beam arrays for their ships and hand rifles/pistols for their Captains/BOs, and never ever need to buy new ones. (Yes, I know there are better weapons in game than the Infinity Marks, and most would say needed for PvP, but the IMs are more than acceptable for all PvE use.)
This could affect the game's internal economy. And if people have less reason to grind for Badges, Marks, Emblems, etc, then they have less reason to play, which hurts Cryptics economy.
This is just a theory.
Edit: Sorry, it took a while for me to type this up (getting interrupted here), and I see it's already been replied to...

You know I swear one of the devs said this was a new tech that recently developed at the time the first ones came out and you were hoping to utilize it more.
Also, not nearly as many players as you think are all that interested in min/maxing as they level as you seem to think.
Anyway, thanks for letting us know your reason for it.

I really only see this as either frustrating people by making them play the same mission again and again or people dropping the weapon after they have tiered out of it.
This is how we always wanted to do it, we just didnt have the time.
Okay, so let me get this straight; because you didn't have the time you implemented a system that was more user-friendly. Since then you decided to find the time and go back and make the rewards less user-friendly as was originally intended?
Can we just roll this back and pretend that you never had the time?
While this may feel like a nerf, a direct comparison of the weapons shows that it isn't. If you go through and look at the comparative damage, the tiered items have slightly higher stats.
Very slightly, and in exchange for a lot of extra work. If the "new" additions were, say, competitive with Mk. XII Purples or something then maybe I could see the change as worth it. But they're not.
If you really want these items with slightly higher stats in the game, why not offer them as an additional reward option on top of the scaling ones that were already available? Then people can select the ones they want.
I mean, you can't have missed all the praise these items got during the Breen and Dividian series specifically because they scaled. I can't see why anyone would think it would be a good idea to go back and remove something that specifically praised by the consumer.
Bad "fix."
I like Night of the Comet, but not enough to want to play it five+ times every rank.

They did it because we now have mission replay.
My guess is the tiered weapons will now be more in line with other tiered weapons. The ones that leveled up with you put out less damage at each 'rank'.
This will give people incentive to use the mission replay.
i'm not rly happy with the loss of some levelless reward, but i already have most of them on my charicter so doesnt rly matter.
back to kind of the thread's original purpose. will we get 2 weapons slots for our BOs, npc enemies get it, even the basic klingon warrior, so why not let us do it with our BOs, it's melee weapons related
Pardon my sarcasm, but did you decide to do it this way because grandfathering worked soooooooo well the last time?
The previously grandfathered consoles were ridiculously imbalanced. These are only slightly different, and in this case the grandfathered item is weaker than the new item.

I hold out hope that bridge officers will have two weapon slots, one melee and one ranged, when the ground combat revamp comes out. Ideally, I'd like captains to have three slots, one melee and two ranged.

I completely agree with this. As of right now, I don't really have much use for melee weapons. I like my stun pistol, sniper rifle setup. If I had another weapon slot, I would definitely make use of melee weapons.

C-store is uncommon
Crafting in game now are rare or very rare.

From release notes:
That's the fore and aft blue phasers, and something that escapes me this moment. (edit: type 2 phasers is the other)
Anyway, the weapons per say weren't removed, but the reward weapons changed to no longer leveling with you but being tiered based on when received.
So when you advance in rank, you can likely go back ... replay the mission and get it again?
