Can we get a horse?

Captain Picard loved his horse riding, even had his own saddle. Kirk loved his horse riding, had his own stable and horses. Horses by these two captains were a common trait. I haven't seen any horses on any planets. I'm not sure how you'd incorporate this, but I think it would be great to have Captain Picard's saddle. And I think it'd be great to have a horse in-game. A pet that follows you? An option to ride a horse? I'm not sure how it would be setup. But somehow, you have to bring horses into the game.

    Heya Doc,
Haha...somehow, I don't see horses ever coming to Star Trek Online. But one can always hope... :D

    You want Horse Simulator 2011.

Cryptic resources would be better spent on anything else besides horses.

Well they are canon. And no where is it stated horses were extinct by 2409. Sure why not? :p

Putting in ground vehicles would be easier to implement and would make even more sense, but I don't see that happening... ever. The time is limited, development team is small, salaries are expensive and there are way too many more important things to implement.

If not an actual horse, what about Picard's Saddle. I think that would be a neat item to acquire through some mission. Or perhaps even an accolade called "Picard's Saddle" if you help some alien's farm animals on another planet. Maybe the animals need you to bring them some food and aid, or there is a plague and you have to cure it and save the towns livestock and animals, and the accolade you get is called "Picard's Saddle" or, you actually get an item. Just thinking out loud, might be neat. If nothing else, its an accolade idea.

I wouldn't mind mission-specific mounts or ones that can only be used on maps like Vulcan or Andoria. I would not care to see jousting competitions on ESD though :D

Ah... But Jousting in ESD's Medieval Holodeck program... That might be fun to watch... Or participate in.

Same thing goes for a baseball holodeck program, located on DS9's holosuite

I pictured my Klingon riding through ground combat missions on horseback, dodging grenades and phaser fire while swinging his bat'leth, his Orion women riding right behind him.

His Borg BO would be riding a motorcycle, though. Or driving a tank with multiple turrets.

    Heh, vehicles would be funny.

NO... Mounts and Vehicles in STO would be fine for holodeck missions, but for core gameplay, it needs to stick with canon...

And please... Before someone says anything about the Argo... I consider that to have been one of Trek's all-time most stupid scenes. The other alltime stupid scenes were also in Nemesis.

Now Driving a car like Kirk did in the classic "A Piece of the Action", I can see that. But it wasnt a combat situation. And yes, Kirk and company rode blue horses in Star Trek V to good effect, but again, their use was not in combat.

So some missions could use vehicles or mounts for plot tools, but for the overwhelmingly most part, we should fight on our feet.

And if we just want to ride or race or whatever... That's what the Holodeck is for. You kno... The Holodeck, where the crew of the Ent-D, DS9 and Voyager went to do things that they couldnt really do in their "real life" careers... As well as giving the shows an excuse to jump the shark without actually jumping the shark...

I forgot about the Argo. But secretly I did quite like it. It reminds me of a Moon Buggy. With a phaser cannon on the back.

Nope. There are some things that are far too dumb to accept as canon, even for the most hardcore of Trek nerds. Some might say, especially for us.

The movie is basically asking us to accept that there is a Trek vehicle named the Argo. It's a dune buggy with its own special ship to carry it around places. This dune buggy is far less useful than the shuttle that houses it, which can fly, land anywhere, is shielded and climate contained, etc. Unlike the Argo itself, which:

1: Has room for only three people
2: Cannot cross rivers, mountains, or other natural barriers
3: Provides no protection from the elements or potentially hostile climates of alien worlds
4: Has extremely limited storage capacity
5: Is equipped with one rear-mounted phaser cannon with an extremely limited firing arc that is only useful if you happen to get into a dune buggy chase scene in a terrible movie.

This list goes on and is provided by redlettermedia.com if you want it.

Just as canon as the space hippies in that TOS episode, "The Way to Eden"

The herbert who came up with the argo should be shot with a cannon. It should never have become canon... We reach?

    Steppin' into Eden... Yay, brother...

Well really the game's most glaring omission is the lack of a house cat. You should be able to play with him like Data did and train him like in Black and White. There already is a feline supplement random drop so I feel cheated. After that we should remind the devs that Picard played a flute, Data the violin, Riker the trombone, and Harry Kim the clarinet.

You can lead a horse to STO, but you can't make it fire quantum torpedoes. So, I guess that's a no.

I think a horse would be cool for exploring planets where there's no combat, but I'd rather have a different pet.

Totally agree! I'd love to be able to have a cat live on my ship, so it can follow me around when I'm on my bridge. I'd love a dog too like Porthos.

Harry Kim also played the saxophone :)

Why would you want to have a horse for planets exploring. i tought that was the main reason why shuttles were made. Please no horses.

    *Blinks*

Environmentally restricted, like on the Holodeck, or on some vacation planet with a high horsedung tolerance perhaps.

Galloping horses in the general environment kinda spoils the futuristic feeling? Might add some tall ships on the Holodeck while at it, for that salty diversion. Arrrr. :D

There were people kicking, screaming and throwing their toys out the pram to get the most silly and despisable thing ever encountered in Star Trek, and they succeeded. Because there was apparently a scene during which one might have seen half of a certain species for a few seconds. Therefore people concluded these darn bi-pedal tribbles, those walking carpets, those wookies of star trek also known as Caitians were the center of the universe and the most important thing to ever be added to the game, no matter how silly and superfluous if not even detrimental to the game's atmosphere the rest of the playerbase considered it (believe it or not, the majority of people is not here to watch female humanoid double D cats running around in shirts and skirts).

Kirk and Picard's horses got (a lot) more on-screen time than those cursed furballs so people just have to scream "it's canon!" etc. loud and long enough and voil

The thing is, there are any number of situations in which horses, vehicles, and other ridable mounts are perfectly acceptable and cool in Star Trek.

    Where they SHOULD be:
    1. The Holodeck
    2. On the surface of alien worlds
    a. Horses on pre-industrial worlds
    b. Cars, etc. on pre-warp worlds
    c. High-tech vehicles on post-warp worlds.

    Where they SHOULD NOT be:
    1. In your inventory
    2. Seen being ridden through ESD or Qu'Onos
    3. Anywhere on your ship but in the Holodeck

If we follow these guidelines, then there is no reason to *not* include them. They belong here, in the proper places. They are part of Star Trek.

I mean, good heavens! Can you not see an Exploration mission in which we are on the surface of a pre-warp world, under cover, riding around in the alien equivalent of a Model T? If you can't then you aren't stretching your imagination anywhere near far enough.

The nice thing about Star Trek and the holodeck/going in disguise to pre-warp culture is it provides huge opportunities to break out of the stereotypical "sci-fi" box and into something different.

Though as was said, it definitely has to be integrated properly so it makes sense but there's no reason we couldn't see all kinds of interesting things or people.

Personally I hope someday to bump into Moriarty on the holodeck someday and hope to have "era appropriate costumes" to match.
