I would not mind pets if you could "learn" them like a skill, they do this in WoW so they dont take up space in your bags/bank and you dont have to equip them.... they are just pointless pets that follow you around afterall.
I think the Horta is cool, though useless. If you read about TMP in memory alpha, they were going to have a Horta representative on the Federation council. It was, and still is, my hope that the Horta will grow to have some usefulness, perhaps even becoming a BO. I took it in hopes he will grow to be useful in time.
Heck, they upgraded the Dreadnought, why not the Horta? Maybe make it to where after a specified period of time, he gains abilities. I like the idea of seemingly useless items becoming diamonds in the rock (pun intended).

I'm still wondering how having a Horta BO would work since he doesn't have arms or anything.
Sadly, we're never going to please everyone. We thought this mission reward was pretty cool, and different enough from the few other non-combat social pets we have that a great many of you would enjoy it. OP, I'm sorry you didn't enjoy this week's reward.
Personally I think the OP is in the minority. I loved the Horta hatchling. I think it is very very cool! But then I grew up with TOS so it has a special place in my heart. Also, I believe you had other items to choose from if you didn't want the Horta.

When you watch Devil in the Dark, there were a couple of times individuals touched a Horta without being burned. They appear to have the ability to control their burning touch. Besides, it is silly to assume all races in the UFP have humanoid attributes and capabilities, just read the Titan series. Think of the usefulness of a Horta BO in melee combat. I for one want to see some non humanoid BOs.
We would not be able to see a hamster pet. You have my permission to tell everyone your pet hamster is following you.
However, Giant Space Hamsters that power Gnomish Spelljammer ships, well... those we could see. I wouldn't mind one of those. Of course, once in a while it would have to bite you for no reason.

My only complaint about the in-game Horta is that They made it into a Lava Kinda Creature...
They were never LAVA Creature's.... they are Flexible Silicone Creature's that use some kind of ACID SECRETIONS to burrow through the sub-surface of planet's.
They also apparently, are able to digest the sludge created by their secretions and the material they burrow through ,because the tunnel's they leave behind are smooth and clean.
GIVE THIS! We should be able to put it in a cage in the ready room and every five minutes it should escape and run around the bridge for a minute or two before returning to the cage.

Captain: Commander Horta, report.
*Commander Horta burns a reply into the floor of the bridge*
Not a good idea unless you don't ask it to reply often, or have a really large bridge... oh, wait.
??
you mean all one of them?

Or a gribble like in NF: Stone and Anvil.
How about a pet Mugato?
Hmmm.... Ok you can ride your giant pet hampster, but I will just keep feeding my Horta.
Maybe It will become my ground ride with the power to spit acid that can dissolve solid rock in seconds! MUAHHH....
