Sadly, we're never going to please everyone. We thought this mission reward was pretty cool, and different enough from the few other non-combat social pets we have that a great many of you would enjoy it. OP, I'm sorry you didn't enjoy this week's reward.
I think next week we might have something a little more your style in store, and man...
Just wait until you guys see the series finale reward!
Thanks,
Stormshade
Awesome! I can't wait to get my Princess Leia Pet in her gold outfit complete with leash!
Long have many of us dreamed of that...
The horta is an awesome reward because it's the multi-tool of pets. You can cook on it, it can keep you warm, and it entertains the youngin's with it's bodily noises.
Compare the horta to the warrigul. You can't cook on the warrigul without using a plasma grenade, it can't keep you warm unless you let it sleep with you (and it ain't soft and cuddly), and it eats youngin's. And the arena idea? Fiery rock monster vs. funky looking dog. Or targ. Or sehlat. Or Romulan miners.
Horta pets FTW. I think its great just for the comedic value. I wish though that if a Vulcan clicked on it or something it would shout PAIN or something from the episode... lol.
You don't get it. We got a pet Horta. A Horta, that burrows out of the ground next to us when called. I guess you have to be a TOS-fan to get the whole awesomeness of that.:D
This. I don't want a Targ. I don't want a Selat. I don't want a Tribble. I don't what whatever it is. But I WILL take a Horta, BECAUSE IT IS A FREAKING HORTA!!!!!
There were other rewards for those who didn't want the Horta, and that's great, since the Scorpion Fighters were the ONLY reward for the Vault. I could do the replay for the Shuttle Phaser, but that was for doing the replay.
I'll add that I really like the way the mission was crafted. I had seen the Hortas following folks around and saw the mission reward, so I knew what was coming, but when the Romulan miner said "There are devils down there in the dark!" I just couldn't stop smiling.
And it seems to me the Romulan Miners, assuming we share with them the story of the original Horta from our Federation logs, will suddenly find themselves in enough money to make even that Ferengi happy. The original episode ended with the miners making contact with the Horta babies, and sending them out to happily mine out the ore for the miners to collect.
Perhaps have a pet bed in the captains quaters where your pets can roam and sleep!
THIS!!!!! I was going to say, "Let's see the pets roam around when we go to our ship interior", but this is perfect.
I suppose I'll add that it would have been nice to have a Horta as a BO or playable race, but that obviously enters into all of the issues about "How does a Horta hold a phaser? How does a Horta wear armor? How does a Horta operate starship control consoles?" Given that it would have been that hard to implement, the pet seemed like a nice compromise, and after reading the Info description it seems just fine. It's a baby Horta. It's as simple as that.
You did see the threads about horta's when Q first started changing people into them?
Just because Horta are in the game doesn't mean they fit in that mission. The Horta presence "flowed" with that story about as well as the presence of a random Devidian or Breen would have...
i fairly sure you didn't have to take the horta you could have taken something else. wasn't it a selection? i seem to remember two armors to pick from aswell.

Yeah it was between the Horta and The Sword of a Thousand Truths...
Seriously Cryptic, what's with all these pet rewards? Don't get me wrong, i loved the Mine Enemy mission but i was hoping for a better reward than just another thing that follows me around. We've got enough pets now to start up an intergalatic zoo...what is this Star Trek Online or Farmvile? May i suggest a Thaleron Tribble or my own little Thaleron generator as a reward or maybe a unique romulan BO? Thanks
this is y i took the armour and not the stupid little pet. the whole mission was...sub par to say the least but hey they all cant be winners right?
What people seem to ignore is that the reward for each episode doesn't have to be some piece of uber loot that's unique and pwns everything else. If you people are doing the feature episodes for the rewards at the end, then in my opinion you are compeltelly missing the point of what makes the episodes good.

They did flow into that mission well. A mine, strange creatures....
Lot better than a Devidian or Breen and a good reward for the mission (in a mine). Sorry it wasn't some uber loot, but I think it fit well. I mean it worked better than some fighters we get to launch from any ship, but then fighters can be used in game for combat, and some need all the crutches they can get.
I still think Hortas are just a small evolutionary step, the simple sausage and cheese life forms that become the peperoni and cheese Pizza the hutts of legend.

I would suggest you go back and watch the TOS episode "Devil In The Dark" to refresh your memory as to just how appropriate the Horta really is in this STO mission.

Fiery rock monster ftw. Z
As much as your delight for the Horta is apparent..., You also should go back and watch "The Devil In The Dark" as your Horta knowledge is somewhat lacking...
The Horta are NOT Lava Creatures.... they actually extrude a unique caustic acid that dissolves most solids down to a sludge that they can then ingest if they desire...
(they also can sludgify people's, but apparrently they don't like the way we taste...)
Otherwise Mr. Spock and Dr. McCoy would never had been able to get anywhere near the wounded creature (let alone even touch it).

Isn't it wonderful that you alone, apparently have this remarkable intuitiveness, to realize that this particular mission is well below the standards that the rest of us seem to be going by...?
I would thank you for having the determination to go against all odds and pointing this out to the player base as a whole, but I'm probably not even worthy to be in the same instance as you.

Yeah, I know. I'm just going by the effects Cryptic put into it. The horta has the same lava effect that, well, lava has in-game. And it's steaming. And bubbling. Looks very lava-ish. Maybe a horta offshoot?

It's not like the Horta was the only choice for a reward.
Besides, since the special items are generally the kind that level with you, there's going to be a point where you have too many guns/torpedoes/gadgets to even use them all. Throwing in an occasional non-combat item helps delay that day while still handing out cool unique stuff for every mission.
Also unlike a certain non-combat item from a featured episode series, the Horta has yet to be accused of crashing anyone's frame rate.

Well let's see "wild" Horta don't have starships. So how'd they get there?
25th Century Romulans and Ferengi and especially Romulans in the service of the Empire/Tal Shiar should know WHAT a Horta is and how to defeat one...they've only been known for what? 250 years by this point?
My only real complaint is how'd these "Wild" Horta get there? It's not the planet from the TOS episode and if you go back and refresh your TOS memory you'll notice that the Horta in the TOS episode is the last of it's kind and that they aren't spacefaring. Yes more hatched but that doesn't change the question of how they got there, unnoticed?
If they added an explaination like "Oh, yeah, that Horta I forgot about her. We made a deal with it to come help cut holes in the mine and we'd let it use the mine as a hatchery." Really lame but better than "Oh hey look here's a Horta!"

Maybe some ancient and long extinct race took them there. Not like that would be a first in Trek.
Well, a Horta was supposed to be one of the ambassadors In Star Trek IV, and in non-cannon work, Horta joined the federation in The Romulan Way, Articles of the Federation & Devil in the Sky. They even fly their own ship with only Horta in Dyson Sphere. So Horta are both space-faring and deal with Romulans. I think it perfectly appropriate we meet one on another mining planet and enslave...er, keep as a mascot.. one of their young.
Also in one of the novels,, Nog grabbed a few Horta eggs to sell, maybe some stayed in the containment field and actually didn't hatch and made it there when the Ferengi arrived, rolling off and hatching,..

Now this is an idea. We can have our pets battle it out, and place bets. In Quatloons of course.
