So I'm in a room in the house. I hear screaming. It's loud. It's some kid and sounds like it's in the next house.
I'm about to go check and my mom says it's a kid in the next yard she saw fighting about not wanting to go with a parent somewhere due to a divorce. So, despite it being loud as heck and sounding really close I decide to trust her word.
It turns out it was a kid IN OUR GARAGE screaming his head off to his mom (also in our garage!). The kid is disabled with a medium functioning (enough to talk) mental disability and apparently ran into our garage to get away from the mother. So for like 45 minutes I'm hearing screaming and want to check it out but my mom kept telling me it was next door and just some whiny kid. I trusted her :P.
Turns out my mom didn't even know anything and just guessed. Later she found out they had been in the garage when the lady apologized to her.
Okay, the situation is understandable. The kid is disabled and it was a tough situation. However I'm left with the thought that I shouldn't trust my mom's words and can easily imagine someone stabbing someone in this house, or killing someone, or using our house to get away from the cops and has hostages while the cops are outside on a loud speaker trying to calm him down... while he's in our garage. All the time my mom telling me nothing is happening.
I knew I should have checked myself. My mom is oblivious and I was crazy to take her word for it . This whole time I'm doing photoshop work and chatting here while this kid is making it hard to think and screaming.
And I still think "what if it was something more serious?"
XP
If someone was being stabbed I'd be here like an idiot playing games or something. A week later I find the bodies.

Just a thought. You can trust nothing but your own perception... and even that can be altered ^_^
How did either of them get into your garage?
I just didn't think much of it at the time. I figured "why would she give me false information in this situation of a screaming kid who I'd check to make sure they weren't dying?" but that was too big of an assumption I guess.
I wouldn't think someone would bull TRIBBLE a story for such a situation.
This is what I would have done.
And then I would have found how they got in the garage. Such a security breach of inner lair cannot be allowed to happen again. What if it had been the heroes instead of some...resisting urge to use derogatory term...kid and his mom having a screaming match? My whole plan could have been foiled.
And then I would have had to eliminate the two intruders. Can't have them blabbing to the OSI about the secret death rays and other experiments in the ol' garage.
No protection. Heck, she uses ME for protection when there's any protection involved (I'm a big 25 year old). Just assumptions and mistakes and a life lesson for me. That lesson being "NEVER TRUST MOMS!" and I will spread the word down many generations.
It was in jest. But seriously, nobody trust MOMS! It's a TRAP!
I have trust issues. That's why I always sit in the corner of restaurants. Because then I can them when they come after me. Just because I don't know who might be after me doesn't mean they aren't.
I also sleep with a gun and sword nearby.
-wonders what would happen if raven discovered people yelling at each other in her garage-

It looks like it could do massive damage.
I don't trust guns. People tend to shoot themselves more often then you shoot bad guys with them so I avoid them.
"*BEEP* Screaming kid is currently located in your garage..." "Mom you liar!..........KAAAAAAAHHHHHNNNNNN!!!!!!!!!"
.....That's what I would have done anyways.
Truthfully? Bang, Bang. They were on and inside my property where they were without permission. They were yelling at each other, possibly quite belligerently. Possibly had or had access to a weapon, real or improvised. If they were yelling at each other, I would have had reason to suspect drugs may have been involved as well on their ends making the situation even more dangerous. And me, being a cute and innocent honor roll college girl having to possibly defend herself against two crazed assailants, would have been well within her rights to eliminate a probable threat before I was harmed.
Bingo!
Two drunk guys met in one of the bars I used to work in, and got even more smashed. The staff put up with them till they decided to leave, (pre revised Dram Shop Law in Arizona). They were so drunk one staggered out like rubber band man with no skeleton to support him, while he drug the other who had passed out.
The manager was at the door with me and waved me off because they looked like friends.
They made it halfway through the parking lot before the liquor in the conscious one hit his system and he dropped the passed out guy who hit his head on the asphalt so hard I could feel it in the soles of my feet even though they were about seventy five feet away.
I started to engage but my manager waved me off again, he said he did not want me to get hurt! I was a bouncer, a head bouncer who if he had to could bounce a sober doorman if they got out of control, and potential injury was part of the job. Again I listened and did not stop the man from lifting his new found friend to his feet and dropping him again so hard that once again I felt the impact of his skull against he ground in my ankles.
This went on six more times. Each time I went to stop the overly helpful drunk. Each time I was called back. Long story short the passed out guy eventually got a ride to the hospital most likely with multiple concussions.
What did I learn? While you should always be open to good advice or at least a different point of view, sometimes you have to listen to your instincts and your intuition. That and a good soldier knows when to disobey.
That's a bad idea. Lock your doors, even when you're home.
I mean, like you said, it could have been a murderer trying to escape from the police and they would have been able to just walk right in and take your family hostage.
And it doesn't matter how nice a neighborhood you live in either. Bad people can be anywhere. You can't trust anyone these days, not even your neighbors.
Be safe. Lock up. Make it a habit.
I live in the middle of no where, about a mile from my closest neighbor, and I still lock the doors, have security cameras and motion sensors outside. I don't like surprises.
...wait, was that a contradictory statement?
