Confessing my Comm Badge Sins

I just ranked up to Commander yesterday. But a week ago, I realized I was perhaps commiting a great Star Trek sin. You see, I use the command insignia on all my bridge crew, whether they are Tac, Sci, or eng, or not even command at all. I like the look of the command emblem. The sci and eng insignia are too weird for me. On MY ships, your rank pips are enough to designate rank. Everyone on my ship wears a silver badge, and command insignia.

So, on a scale of 1-10, where 10 is the highest, how big of a STO sin is this? Not that you'll change my mind.

    IMHO - 0

Really, considering the variety of uniforms in this game, I think combadges are rather low on the noticability scale.

BTW, I use the AGT combadge on all my Starfleet characters - even the one with the Enterprise uniform.

I do like the AGT badge. do I have to buy the costume to get the badge? I dislike the AGT uniforms compared to other clothing options in this game.

I usually use the AGT badge as well. I gave up on the rank pips though, it was too annoying to have to go redo everyone's outfit every time I got to the next tier.

It's possible the Cryptic/Atari team added it to the AGT uniform; I haven't bought it, so I don't know. However, it is/was accessible as an award for having a game account (not a forum account) for 200 days, I believe (it could be a 100 day game reward; I need to find the page with that information to be sure).

Just wait until you've leveled everyone up and change everyone then. ;)

No. The AGT uniform does not include the combadge (much to my disappointment).

The only way to get it is with the 100-day veteran reward.

I'm right there with ya. My Fed Medic uses the Command badge for his crews since the division is easily noticed among his crew. SO it ain't a sin in my book

I use the AGT badge too. It's not a big deal since you can tell what kind of officer mine are from the colour of their uniform, which is a lot more noticable :p

Except for the officer I consider the XO, he's sci but wears red...

and the tac I specced to be more defensive and consider my security officer, he's in gold...

aaaand 1 sci officer in the troi uniform... BUT the rest follow the usual colour patterns!

Edited for multiple typo's, I'm good at letting those slip by.... as a matter of fact I just had to edit the edit because there was a typo in the line explaining that I edited the post for typo's.... I'm sleepy, thats a good enough excuse

I do that for all my commanding officers, too. My Eng and Tac are both red, though the Sci has gold trim (being in the ENT uniform and all, and gold being the command color).

    There IS a color-coding system to that? I admit I hadn't noticed...

Yeup - in ENT and TOS, Red was Security and Engineering (and the most likely to die, hence the term "Red Shirt ;) ), Blue was Sciences/Medical, and Gold was command and misc.

The post TNG era, Red and Gold switched, with Red being Command and misc while Gold became Security, Engineering, and Operations (the latterjust basically being a subdivision of Engineering, IMHO). Blue remained Sciences and Medical. Admitedly, this was most obvious during the TNG run - once the DS9 and TNG Movie uniforms became prevelent, it wasn't as noticable, as the colored shirts had bassically become undergarments.

The TOS movie department colors were... more varied. This page is a good indication of all "canon" Starfleet uniform colors.

This reminds me, actually, of something I've been wondering and wrestling with. And I realize there's no one right answer, but I want to know what other people think.

All of our characters, whatever their specialties, end up in command (role, if not branch) as a result of some pretty heavy attrition in the tutorial. Now that my engineer is in the center seat, should he be wearing a red uniform? On the one hand, this makes captains (small c) fairly, if not literally, monotonous; on the other, well, Janeway came up as a science officer but she doesn't wear blue, nor did Captain Spock have a grey collar on his jacket... you see the problem?

*shrugs* It's your character. If you want your captain to be dressed in pink, by all means, feel free to do so.

I knew about the TOS color coding system, but didn't know ENT had it too. (Shows you how much I paid attention to that show, lol.)

I arbitrarily have assigned everyone on my ship a rank based on how useful they are and they wear the appropriate rank pips.

Furthermore I have a standard uniform all my captains and crew use with standardized colors for each duty. Captain and Command wear red. Engineers and Tactical officers wear yellow. Sciences Blue. Medical Greenish-Teal.

A small selling point to the game is customizations. I also run the AGT CommBadge but I have reversed the colours. I prefer silver pips as well since they stand out more in my opinion. The same applies to the uniforms. I see so many colour variations on uniforms and even the odd that looks traditionally canon. To each their own.

According to that "guide", which is well done by the way, and made me realize there are TWO science blues I never noticed before, I have ANOTHER sin to confess. I like gold pips and silver badges, as you can see. So sue me. I refuse to conform, lol.

To whoever said they give their crew arbitrary pip ranks based on ingame usefullness, instead of the rank they earned in game for you, THAT is the bigger sin. And a damn good reason for them to mutiny against their captain, for refusing to allow them to be properly recognized for their true rank, lol.

I recently went to promote and re-pip my crew after I reached commander, as sort of a reward for them too. Then I saw I didnt have enough merit points to promote even one of them. :( Renaming your toon cost WAY to much in merit points, Im just saying. (Renamed Bolian from Pep Seeblue [get it], to Dwayne Bluerock)

Also, has anyone considered altering their uniform to reflect rank and career progression, regardless of specialty? What I mean is, when I first started the game, I was shocked they gave me command at JUST ensign. I didnt feel I was worthy to wear the red, even though I was a tactical officer. So, I went with the B type uniform you see my avatar wearing now, but chose light gray as the primary color of the uniform top. Back then, I wanted all my officers to wear white shoulders. I was a stickler too, and insisted we all wear the same uniform type. I did stick with the canon coloring system for their specialties. Then I decided, white should indicate command, and I went for a more starfleet black ops type look for the rest of them, and I held onto the white, so it was obvious from a distance, who was commanding the away team and the ship. Then, after heavy debate with myself, I decided to break the uniform uniform restriction. While tooling around in the dressing room, I realized I could make Dr Jenny Ryan (inspired from Jeri Ryan, but I didnt want a toon with Jeri, seemed boyish, lol) look a little, Supergirl-ish. And she looked so hot, I figured, ah hell, Seven didnt wear a standard uniform. So I employed the Voyager rule, and said, ok, if it looks good, go with it. And so now, my science doctor looks like Supergirl on away missions, and my tactical girl, Rachel Nichols, nicknamed Scarlett, has what I call a combo of my uniform preference, and nods to the GI Joe movie and cartoon version of Scarlett with the colors I chose. Some guys Ive met online play as hot women, I prefer to be ME, surrounded by HOT women, lol. My other officers are engineer (green) Leannah Brahms (I call her Leah Brahms granddaughter, lol) Vulcan Sa'Rel (kinda Vulcanish for Sarah, which popped into my head and Sarek) had to be transfered recently to make room for another officer award I was given, but I plan to bring her back to the crew eventually. I tried to draw her face to mimick Dr Selar's face. My engineer Frances Rider is inspired by a grade school crush I had (not her actual last name), and I gave her a Seven uniform, but considered her a mix of engineer and science, hence the coloring. And my science officer Kim Kardashian.

Oh, and is anyone aging themself appropriately? You can see from my crew, Im sorta Trek racist, I prefer humans mostly. My first officer (eventually), Bajoran Jonathan Frakes, my Bolian, Dwayne "The Rock" Bluerock, and Vulcan Z'Quinto are my only aliens on my senior staff. And as you can see, they lean heavily toward human appearance. For myself, well, I AM myself. I know most like imaginary characters to be their primary toon, but I put MYSELF in the game, because I want to be in this game, in Trek, not some alien. So, confession, my toon looks as close to me as I can make him. Mind you, he's the young me, with the thin cheeks I had when I graduated high school. Im going to properly age myself for myself eventually. As you can see, I recently got a buzzcut. Well, at 33, it appears Im pulling a Picard, and my once thick hispanic hair is leaving me now. But the buzzcut is the closest I can get in game to what I have going now, which IS a buzzcut, but thinner on top. Oddly enough, the Picard hair isnt in game, only buzzcut versions or just all bald. Well, Im NEVER going all bald in real life, so buzzcut will represent me. Im now in my last rank of youth (because Riker looked young as Commander when he started). When I make captain, I'll age the face with either the age option, or heroic, whichever I like. For admiral, it will be gray hair buzzed. So, while I dont role play in practice, Im role playing with my toon in theory. It just seems odd to be eventually admiral, and still look like I just came out of the academy. But, thats just me. Literally, lol.

Heres a photo album of my crew so far, and our changes. What I love about screenshots is I can take photo album shots throughout missions and my career in STO. So now, my screensaver is watching my life playout in STO, seeing the changes through the "years" and smiling to myself as I remember when THAT picture was taken. Ive also been known to get next to hot female toons I see others sporting in game (crossing my fingers it isnt a guy inside, lol). So if you see me walk up to your sexy female toon some day, and get in close alongside you, SMILE, you just got into my photo album.
